Fugitive ‘serial killer' living at Raj ashram as priest arrested by Delhi Police
An ayurveda doctor convicted in seven murder cases and absconding for the last two years was residing at an ashram as a priest in Rajasthan and treating devotees for ailments — till Monday, when he was finally arrested after a seven-month long manhunt, Delhi Police officers said on Tuesday.
Sixty seven-year-old Devender Sharma, who is charged of murdering 21 men between 2002 and 2004, had jumped his parole two years back for a second time in June 2023. Sharma was one of the most wanted criminals in 2004 as he specifically targeted taxi drivers and confessed to have killed over 50 men, according to police.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2004. However, in 2020, he was released on parole and was absconding till he was nabbed few months later. In June 2023, he was again released on a two-month parole, which he too jumped.
In 2004, according to Delhi Police, Sharma said he had abducted over 21 taxi drivers from Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Prades, Rajasthan, murdered them, .and dumped the bodies in crocodile-infested lakes in UP's Kasganj to destroy evidence. Police said that he also facilitated more than 125 illegal kidney transplants in Delhi-NCR between 1994-2004.
The Crime Branch arrested him from Rajasthan's Dausa on Monday after a seven-month long operation during which searches were conducted across Delhi, Jaipur, Aligarh, Mumbai, Aligarh, Agra, and Prayagraj.
A team led by ACP Umesh Barthwal and inspector Rakesh Kumar had first zeroed in on Sharma's family residing in Mumbai. 'We put his wife's and family members' phone on surveillance. Then, an interesting pattern emerged. We found that a majority of the unknown number calls were received from either temples or religious sites across India…There were calls from Ashrams, temples in UP, even Mahakumbh area…' said an investigator aware of the details.
Further analysis led police to recent calls being made from Dausa in Rajasthan. 'Our aim was to first look at all temples and religious sites. We had a hunch that Sharma could be hiding at a religious place,' added the investigator, wishing not to be named.
DCP (crime) Aditya Gautam said that investigators last week found that Sharma was residing at an ashram as a priest. He had changed his name to Devdas and was treating patients by prescribing them medicines, said police.
Gautam said his team stayed at Dausa for over a week and posed as devotees at the ashram to look for the accused.
Another investigator said, 'We looked for him at multiple places and then found him as a local priest-doctor at an ashram. When I went to check and posed as a devotee with blood pressure issues, he asked me to put ghee on my head. We identified him and arrested him.'
Sharma, who held a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery degree, ran an Ayurveda clinic in Bandikui, Rajasthan for 11 years. In 1994, he was duped of ₹11 lakh in a gas dealership scam, after which he started his own fake gas agency. Around 1998, police said that he came in contact with his co-accused, Dr Amit Kumar, and they started a kidney racket. Police said that around the same time, he and his gang started abducting taxi drivers at night, killed them for their cars, and later sold the vehicles. He was arrested by the Gurugram and the Delhi Police after a Gurugram-based cab driver went missing in 2003 and his car was found in Delhi.

Surat: A 71-year-old retired woman from Surat was cheated of Rs 57.71 lakh in a long-running cyber fraud , where the accused posed as officials from the Income Tax Department and Reserve Bank of India and lured her with promises of massive financial returns, including a Rs 12 lakh rebate and a Rs 1 crore benefit. The fraud began in Sept 2022, when the victim received a call from a woman identifying herself as Dipika Sharma, allegedly a senior officer with the Income Tax Department, part of the Indian Governmental Money Scheme (Contemporary Complaint Management System Division, Delhi). Sharma claimed the victim was eligible for a Rs 12 lakh rebate on past income tax payments, provided she first deposited Rs 30,254 as processing fees. Later, she was asked to pay another Rs 15 lakh as NOC charges. Each time she questioned the lack of any credited funds, Sharma promised to visit Surat with a cheque and help her deposit the funds. The final payment was made on April 19, 2025, when the victim transferred Rs 1.5 lakh as an Income Tax Registration Fee. When the demands didn't stop and no money was received, the woman realized she had been duped. She then approached the 1930 cyber fraud helpline and lodged a complaint. Following this, the Surat Cybercrime Police registered an FIR on June 28 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.

Caught ‘taking bribe', Delhi cop suffers anxiety attack, lands in hospital
Caught in the act of allegedly taking a Rs 25,000 bribe, a Delhi Police head constable suffered an anxiety attack and landed in the hospital, officers said. The incident took place at North Delhi's Burari police station on Friday night when a team from the Vigilance department was lying in wait to arrest the head constable. DCP (Vigilance) Anyesh Roy confirmed the developments and said that the policeman is out of danger. 'He would be arrested as soon as he is discharged from the hospital, and further investigation will continue,' DCP Roy said. According to the police, the Vigilance team received a complaint from a businessman in Burari; he alleged that the head constable demanded a bribe of Rs 75,000 to not remove his personal mobile tower from his terrace. The resident, who lives in West Kamal Vihar, had a complaint registered against him at the Burari police station by his neighbours, who claimed that he had put a mobile tower on his terrace. 'The head constable then contacted the resident and demanded Rs 75,000 from him for not initiating the removal of his tower,' a police officer said. The resident then filed a complaint with the Vigilance department. Police said he was asked to offer the bribe to the accused officer in three tranches of Rs 25,000 each while they laid a trap. 'On Friday night, the complainant went to the Burari police station with the money, and the team from the Vigilance department caught the head constable in the act,' the officer said. Police said the head constable had a bout of anxiety and complained of uneasiness. He was taken to the Burari hospital, where he is in the ICU. On Saturday, senior officers also ordered an inquiry against the SHO of Burari station to ascertain his role in the bribery case. Delhi: Two robbery accused injured in encounter with Police

According to Delhi Police, the encounter took place at 5 am in the Aastha Kunj Park, where the two accused were shot in the leg. Police received information about the whereabouts of the accused, after which they surrounded them. The accused fired at Special Staff Inspector RS Dagar and a Head Constable, after which police fired in retaliation and caught the accused. The two accused, identified as Akshay and Jatin, allegedly looted an American citizen at knifepoint in the South Delhi area a few days ago. In the early hours of Juen 26, a US citizen was robbed after being stabbed in his hand, after which he was admitted to a hospital. He was accompanied by his Indian woman friend during the time of the incident. According to Delhi Police, several other cases of robbery have been registered against the two accused. (ANI)
