Maha govt presents bill for establishment of Kumbh Mela Authority
The Kumbh Mela is being held at the interval of every 12 years in 2027.
The bill titled Nahik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority Act 2025 has been crafted similar to enactments made by Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh for the management and organisation of Kumbh Mela there.
In the year 2015, about 2.50 crore pilgrims participated in the Kumbh Mela held in Nashik. The number of attendees might increase in the upcoming Kumbh Mela, resulting in enormous management challenges, said the bill.
It further added that over time, the scale and attendance of the Kumbh Mela have increased significantly.
'Hence, a need was felt for establishment of an Authority comprising certain officials of the relevant government departments for the seamless organisation and management of Kumbh Mela in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar talukas and other areas of in Nashik division in order to provide facilities and also to provide safe, secure and incident free environment that offers a fulfilling spiritual and touristic experience to all participants including Sadhus, Mahants, pilgrims, tourists and local residents,' said the bill.
The Authority will have powers to prepare a Kumbh Mela plan containing tasks, projects, works or procurement necessary for the management of Kumbh Mela and allied activities.
The Authority Chairperson will give directions to government departments and various authorities for organising Kumbh Mela, to requisition services, facilities, resources, premises or vehicles to provide amenities.
The Authority will have the power to constitute a committee of ministers to review its work from time to time.
The Authority will be in a position to make emergency provision for procurement, construction and accounting in case of an emergency situation or disaster. Besides, the Authority will have the power to grant permission to any person or company to carry on a profession or trade and for the layout of a new temporary city or township in the Kumbh Mela area.
Earlier, the Maharashtra government on June 1 had released the schedule for the upcoming Nashik Kumbh Mela and Amrit Snan (holy dip) scheduled to be held in 2027.
As per the schedule, Simhastha Flag Hoisting ceremony will take place on October 31, 2026, at 12:02 PM (Location-Ramkund Panchavati), Pratham Amritsnan-Monday, August 2, 2027, Ashadh Somvati Amavasya, Mahakumbhasnan/Second Amritsnan-August 31, 2027 and Shravan Amavasya and Tritiya Amritsnan-September 11 September 2027, Bhadrapada Shuddha Ekadashi. The Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela will also take place on the same dates.
All the days of Ekadashi, Pournima, Amavasya, Vaidhriti Vyatipat Yoga during the Simhastha Parva Parva period in Nashik will be pilgrimage and darshan parvas for devotees. In addition to the three main parvas in Kumbh Mela 2027 in Nashik, there are a total of 44 Muhurtas for Parvasnana and a total of 53 Muhurtas for Parvasnana at Trimbakeshwar, said the government release.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that all efforts will be made through the state government to ensure that the Kumbh Mela is held in a safe, clean and holy environment.
'All kinds of facilities will be provided to the devotees coming for the Kumbh Mela. Funds will be made available for this. Since the Kumbh Mela is a symbol of Indian Sanatan culture, the attention of the whole world is on it. Therefore, with the cooperation of everyone, a grand, divine and memorable event will be organised that will amaze the world,' he assured.

Britain to lower voting age to 16 to restore public trust in democracy
London, Jul 17 (PTI) The UK government on Thursday announced that it will lower the voting age from 18 to 16 years in time for the next general election expected in 2029, a manifesto commitment made by the Labour Party when it was voted last year. The move will bring UK-wide elections in line with the devolved Scotland and Wales regions as part of what the British government described as one of the biggest changes to UK democracy in a generation. The plans also include an expansion of the voter ID system to permit the use of UK-issued bank cards as an accepted form of ID at polling stations, to ensure eligible voters are not 'deterred from voting". 'For too long, public trust in our democracy has been damaged and faith in our institutions has been allowed to decline," said UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, marking the release of a strategy paper that sets in motion plans to lower the voting age. 'We are modernising our democracy, so that it is fit for the 21st century. By delivering our manifesto commitment to extend the vote to 16 and 17 year olds, we are taking a generational step forward in restoring public trust and boosting engagement in UK democracy, supporting our Plan for Change," said Rushanara Ali, Minister for Democracy in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). The new strategy covers the creation of a new digital 'Voter Authority Certificate" to ensure Electoral Registration Officers can meet the digital needs of voters, reduce printing costs and ensure faster delivery. An increasingly automated voter registration system is intended to make it easier for people to register to vote and reduce the need to fill out their details across different government services on multiple occasions. In order to boost transparency and accountability in politics, the MHCLG said it will also be closing loopholes that may allow foreign donors via 'shell companies" to influence UK political parties. The MHCLG said it will be incorporating learning from democracies such as Australia and Canada, which have high rates of legitimate voter registration via automated systems. At the same time, far too many people are being deterred from voting because of voter ID rules, with the Electoral Commission finding that 4 per cent of non-voters at the 2024 general election saying that a lack of voter ID was a key reason they didn't vote, equating to around three quarters of a million people across Great Britain, the ministry said. 'Through the new plans, the government is going further to allow UK-issued bank cards to be used as ID when voting, making it far easier for more voters to meet the requirements. This change will allow us to continue to protect the integrity of the UK electoral system, while allowing greater accessibility," it noted. As bank debit and credit cards are issued after an applicant has passed necessary security checks for a bank account, they will ensure that a widely and commonly carried item will be included in the range of identification documents already accepted at polling booths. These measures will strike the right balance by continuing to protect voters from the risk of impersonation, while also removing barriers to ensure legitimate voters are not prevented or discouraged from exercising their right to vote, MHCLG asserted. Expansion of Shirdi Airport be completed before upcoming Kumbh Mela: Maha CM
Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Thursday, directed the administration to complete the renovation and expansion work of Shirdi airport and make it fully operational before the upcoming Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela. He chaired the meeting to review the ongoing works of Shirdi airport and the Greenfield airport at Purandar in Pune district. Taking a detailed review of the expansion and renovation work of Shirdi Airport, Chief Minister Fadnavis said: "The work of a new air traffic control building, integrated cargo building and terminal building at the airport in Shirdi is proposed. These works must be completed before the start of the upcoming Kumbh Mela. However, these works must be expedited and completed on time. If necessary, additional manpower should be used for this. Also, the procurement and structural design work required for the airport should be completed in the coming weeks." "Shirdi Airport is the nearest airport to Mumbai and Navi Mumbai Airport.
