Ukrainian drone attack
on an oil depot near Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi sparked a major fire, Russian officials said Sunday, as the two countries traded strikes.
More than 120 firefighters attempted to extinguish the blaze, sparked after debris from a downed drone struck a fuel tank, Krasnodar regional Gov Veniamin Kondratyev said on Telegram. Videos on social media appeared to show huge pillars of smoke billowing above the oil depot.

Meanwhile, in southern Ukraine, a Russian missile strike hit a residential area in the city of Mykolaiv, according to the State Emergency Services, wounding seven people.
The Ukrainian air force said Sunday Russia launched 76 drones and seven missiles against Ukraine. It said 60 drones and one missile were intercepted, but 16 others and six missiles hit targets across eight locations.
The reciprocal attacks came at the end of one of the deadliest weeks in Ukraine in recent months, after a Russian drone and missile attack on Thursday killed 31 people, including five children, and wounded over 150.

Canada airdrops aid into Gaza, says Israel violating international law
Canada said on Monday (August 5, 2025) it delivered humanitarian assistance through airdrops to Gaza, which has been under a devastating Israeli military assault for almost 22 months, with Ottawa again accusing Israel of violating international law. "The (Canadian Armed Forces) employed a CC-130J Hercules aircraft to conduct an airdrop of critical humanitarian aid in support of Global Affairs Canada into the Gaza Strip. The air drop consisted of 21,600 pounds of aid," the Canadian government said in a statement. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that it was Canadian Armed Forces' first humanitarian airdrop over Gaza using their own aircraft. The Israeli military said 120 food aid packages for Gaza's residents were airdropped by six countries, including Canada. The other five were Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Germany and Belgium. Canada said last week it plans to recognise the State of Palestine at a meeting of the United Nations in September, ratcheting up pressure on Israel as starvation spreads in Gaza. Canada also said on Monday that Israeli restrictions have posed challenges for humanitarian agencies. "This obstruction of aid is a violation of international humanitarian law and must end immediately," Canada's government said. The Israeli embassy in Ottawa had no immediate comment. Israel denies accusations of violating international law and blames Hamas for the suffering in Gaza. Israel cut off food supplies to Gaza in March and then lifted that blockade in May - but with restrictions that it said were needed to prevent aid from being diverted to militant groups. President Donald Trump also claimed Hamas militants were stealing food coming into Gaza and selling it. However, Reuters reported late last month that an internal U.S. government analysis found no evidence of systematic theft by Hamas of U.S.-funded humanitarian supplies. Israel says it is taking steps for more aid to reach Gaza's population, including pausing fighting for part of the day in some areas, allowing airdrops and announcing protected routes for aid convoys. The latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered in October 2023 when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking about 250 hostages, Israeli tallies show. Gaza's health ministry says Israel's subsequent military assault has killed over 60,000 Palestinians. It has also caused a hunger crisis, internally displaced Gaza's entire population and prompted accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and of war crimes at the International Criminal Court. Israel denies the accusations.

Sukhbir Badal takes on AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, alleges AAP made underhand deal with Delhi builders
1 2 Bathinda: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leadership had struck a ₹30,000 crore "underhand deal" with Delhi-based builders to hand over 65,000 acres of Punjab land at throwaway prices to fund election campaigns across the country. Addressing a protest outside the Bathinda deputy commissioner's office, Sukhbir called AAP's land-pooling scheme a "land-grabbing scam" and vowed to continue statewide agitation until the plan was scrapped. "We will not allow an inch of land to be acquired under this scheme," he declared. He accused AAP's national convener, Arvind Kejriwal , of shifting base to Punjab unofficially, saying he had taken up residence in Mohali's Markfed office. "Similarly, Manish Sisodia was given a house next to chief minister Bhagwant Mann's in Chandigarh. Delhi politicians have taken control of Punjab's governance," Sukhbir claimed. He warned that farmers would be left in limbo for years, with undeveloped land destroying livelihoods and destabilising the agricultural economy. BJD's Puri dist strike on Thurs to ‘demand justice' for 15-yr-old
1 2 Bhubaneswar: BJD on Monday called for a six-hour hartal in Puri on Thursday, demanding justice for the 15-year-old girl who died from burn injuries at AIIMS Delhi on Saturday. The party alleged she was murdered despite family members and police stating it was a case of self-immolation. "We will observe the strike from 6 am to 12 noon across Puri district," said Uma Samantaray, BJD's Puri district president, adding that emergency services will remain unaffected. The girl had claimed on July 19 that three unknown men set her on fire near her residence. Police sources said she later changed her statement before a magistrate at AIIMS Delhi, confessing to self-immolation. Following her death on Saturday, her father reiterated that she took her own life due to family-related stress. The family also urged that her death should not be politicised. BJD, however, alleged the police pressurised the girl and her family to call her death a suicide. "We still believe she was murdered. Mystery shrouds the circumstances leading to her father's claim that she killed herself. Police and govt must have applied pressure on the family. We want justice for her," Samantaray said. Responding to the opposition demands for her resignation, Parida stated, "If my resignation helps to bring the girl back to life, I am ready to quit 100 times. The opposition should know that our govt ensures quick and expeditious action against perpetrators. Justice and action had vanished during their rule."
