Man charged after slurry spread on roads ahead of Ballymena's first ever Pride parade

Irish Post2 days ago
A MAN has been charged after slurry was spread on a number of roads in Ballymena, Co. Antrim ahead of the town's first ever Pride parade.
Following the man's arrest, police said they were treating the matter as a hate crime.
Commenting on the incident, Minister for Justice Naomi Long described it as: "Disgusting in every sense of the word."
Despite the matter, the parade went ahead as planned following a clean-up operation involving organisers and local businesses. 'Important event'
Police said a 19-year-old man was arrested after officers on patrol in the Granville Drive area observed slurry on the road at around 2.55am on Saturday.
The man was later charged with criminal damage, possession of an article with a blade or point and causing material to be deposited on a road.
He is due to appear at Coleraine Magistrates' Court tomorrow, June 30.
"Pride is an important event for those in our community who identify as LGBT+ and for those who want to show support for our LGBT+ community," added a statement from the PSNi.
"We want members of our LGBT+ communities in Mid and East Antrim to feel represented by their Police Service and to know that if they come forward to report an incident, they will be met with fairness and respect, particularly if they have been subject to hate crime in any form." 'Frightening time'
Several politicians have condemned the incident, including Alliance Party leader Ms Long.
"I despair the mentality of those who spread slurry on the streets of their town motivated by hate and bigotry. Disgusting in every sense of the word," she tweeted.
"Solidarity to all at Ballymena Pride. It's a frightening time but love will always triumph over hate."
Sian Mulholland, Alliance MLA for North Antrim, expressed her solidarity with those affected.
"There is no place for this kind of disgusting and deliberate attempt to intimidate, disrupt, or shame those taking part in a peaceful and joyful celebration of love, identity, and community," she said.
"I have spoken directly with the parade organisers and the PSNI, and our team has engaged with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to ensure cleansing takes place urgently and the route is made safe and welcoming for all.
"Ballymena Pride is a historic and hopeful moment for our town.
"No amount of hate will drown out the message of inclusion, solidarity, and pride that today represents." 'Disgraceful act'
Ms Mulholland's Sinn Féin counterpart, Philip McGuigan, said the incident was an act of intimidation.
"This is a disgraceful act, clearly intended to disrupt Ballymena's first pride parade and intimidate those taking part," he said.
"It's welcome that a man has since been arrested.
"I want to express my solidarity with everyone involved in Ballymena Pride, who will make history today by marching through the town.
"Equality, rights, and respect must be at the core of our society, and Sinn Féin will continue to stand with our LGBTQIA+ community."
Meanwhile, SDLP Councillor Denise Johnston posted: "The intolerance of some in Ballymena is abhorrent. They are a stain on the town.
"I work in the town and the children and parents I'm in contact with are in sharp contrast to those who would cover the streets in slurry to send a message to our LGBQT community."

Cocaine dealer walks free from court after claiming he only sold to mates

"Nobody can believe the judge seems to have fallen for his nonsense … He'll be celebrating big time' This is the drug dealing pal of ear-biting serial thug Martin Valliday who was convicted this week of supplying cocaine. Ryan Samuel Prenter – who's known as Smurf – pleaded guilty at Antrim Magistrates Court to having cocaine with intent to supply. Pictured here for the first time, Prenter told the court he was only selling the highly addictive drug to his friends but sources in Antrim say he's an associate of Martin Valliday. Valliday is a notorious criminal who has tortured the town of Antrim where he lives for years and was once jailed for committing GBH and robbery on a man who had contacted him to buy ecstasy tablets from him but ended up nearly having his ear bitten off. This week Prenter, of Mull Road in Antrim, was allowed to walk free from court after a judge gave a one-year probation order and told him he must serve 75 hours' community service. Court News NI reported how Prenter was caught when cops searched a vehicle in Antrim town earlier this year and found seven grammes of cocaine. They also located cash, scales, a mobile phone and ten zip bags in the vehicle near the Junction shopping complex around 4.45pm on March 9. The court heard he had a previous record but not for drugs. A prosecutor said the defendant told police he 'gets cocaine in bulk and then splits it between him and his friends and they provide him money for this'. A defence barrister said there was a 'significant gap in offending'. Ryan 'Smurf' Prenter Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 1st District Judge Nigel Broderick said: 'Normally anyone who pleads guilty to possessing drugs with intent to supply can readily expect to receive an immediate custodial sentence'. The light sentence came in the week a County Armagh father went public to call for automatic custodial sentences for those convicted of dealing cocaine after his son took his own life after he became addicted to the drug. Tom McGrath's 22-year-old son Matthew had been using cocaine for several years when he was found dead in the garage of his mother's home in February 2024. Speaking to the BBC, Mr McGrath said he is particularly concerned that many people who deal drugs do not end up serving jail time. A source in Antrim said: 'He's been a low-level drug dealer for years and works with Martin Valliday and his gang of thugs. "Nobody can believe the police and judge seem to have fallen for his nonsense he only sells gear to his friends. 'He'll be celebrating big time that he has pretty much got away with dealing cocaine.' Ryan 'Smurf' Prenter This time last year we reported how Martin Valliday had been put back behind bars for kicking a PSNI vehicle and telling cops it was 'payback for George Floyd'. Valliday was arrested after he had launched what a judge described as a 'terrifying' attack on the home of a woman with a crossbow and a hatchet in December 2023. When he was arrested he went berserk, and when interviewed he bizarrely claimed he was taking revenge for the murder of George Floyd – despite that having nothing to do with the PSNI. In February 2020 Valliday was jailed for three-and-a-half years for a shocking attack which left a man with permanent injuries in what was described in court as a 'drug deal gone wrong'. The victim had told the police he had contacted Valliday through Messenger, wanting to buy ecstasy. The man said he was hit on the back of the head with a beer bottle while Valliday tried to bite his ear off, even shouting 'I have nearly got it'.

Teenagers arrested after jumping out of moving car which ploughed into garden fence

TWO teenagers were arrested for failing to stop for police officers who were on patrol in Derry last night. At around 7.50pm District Support Team (DST) officers spotted a silver Audi A3 on Springtown Road which they signalled to stop as it travelled into Groarty Road. The driver failed to stop and the same vehicle was seen a short time later on Buncrana Road, travelling towards Branch Roundabout and then into a residential area, where it crashed into concrete bollards on Killary Road. Following this the driver and passenger got out of the vehicle as it was still in motion, and the car rolled into a garden fence. 'DST officers, working with Waterside Neighbourhood Team officers, with the use of a drone, with Response officers and Tactical Support Group colleagues, two males, aged 18 and 19 years old, were located and arrested on suspicion of offences and they remain in custody this morning,' a PSNI spokesperson confirmed this morning. A search of the vehicle also saw police seize suspected Class A drugs, and drug-related paraphernalia. "I want to thank the members of the public who assisted with this incident last night, which is a great example of collaborative working, not just across police departments and with colleagues, but also with the community,' the PSNI's Chief Inspector Cathal Pearce said. "Please continue to report any suspicious activity you see in your area,' he added. See More: Car, Derry, Drone, Fail To Stop
