Charles Leclerc crashes before Miami F1 sprint even begins as Lewis Hamilton fumes

Daily Mirror03-05-2025
Charles Leclerc crashed his Ferrari car before the sprint race even started in Miami, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton left fuming at his mechanics for putting intermediate tyres on his car. Leclerc had qualified P6 for Saturday's sprint, with Hamilton just behind him in seventh.
Heavy rain hit the Miami track ahead of the race, leaving the track soaking wet. The pit lane had just opened to let the drivers go to the grid, and on a very wet track Leclerc hit the wall heavily.
The Ferrari man had not even been pushing his car but the heavy rain and standing water caught him out and he skidded into the wall. The crash left his rear left wheel hanging off the car, with Leclerc unable to get it back to the pits, meaning he would not start.
The 27-year-old was left devastated by the incident. He said over team radio: "No, no. Ouch. I'll try to go back. Complete aquaplanning. That was complete aquaplanning, I was not even pushing. I don't think I can go back."
Despite the rain and the standing water, Ferrari had opted to send Leclerc and team-mate Hamilton out on the intermediate tyres, rather than full wets. That proved to be a catastrophic decision, with Hamilton left fuming at the team. He said over team radio: "I don't know how you put us out on Inters here."

Sport goes in cycles, says Horner, as Verstappen rumours grow

SILVERSTONE, England, July 5 (Reuters) - Max Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull to 2028 but the chances of the four-times Formula One world champion seeing it out are looking increasingly slim with team boss Christian Horner accepting next year, if not this, could be make or break. Speaking at the British Grand Prix, Horner confirmed the existence of performance-related clauses that the sport's most sought-after driver can activate to leave early. While Verstappen might be able to trigger them in a matter of weeks, according to some sources, it would be a gamble with a major chassis and engine change -- the biggest for decades -- coming in 2026. One popular view in the paddock, despite constant speculation about a move to Mercedes, is that the Dutch 27-year-old is more likely to wait and see which way the wind is blowing before deciding for 2027. "2026 is going to be a transformational year. It's the biggest rule change in Formula One probably in the last 50 years where both chassis and power unit are being introduced at the same time," said Horner. "Nobody, with hand on heart, can know what the pecking order is going to be... It could be Ferrari. It could be Mercedes. It could be anyone. "It'll only be really this time next year that you'll have a clear indication of what that pecking order is. So, there are no guarantees that jumping into a Mercedes car would automatically be a better proposition." That said, and despite claiming Verstappen wanted to see out his career at Red Bull, Horner offered a history lesson to illustrate that Red Bull was prepared for change regardless. He recalled how Sebastian Vettel, another four-times Red Bull world champion, had joined Ferrari a year after a major rule change in 2014 had begun an era of Mercedes domination and Red Bull struggled with an uncompetitive Renault engine. "I remember (the late Red Bull co-owner) Dietrich Mateschitz telling me at the time 'We don't need the best driver if we don't have the best car'," said Horner. "At that stage, it was about building a team... things go in cycles and sport goes in cycles." Red Bull seem to be already in just such a cycle, their 2023 domination slipping away last year along with design genius Adrian Newey, now at Aston Martin. The Honda engines are going the same way from 2026. Highly influential engineering head Rob Marshall is at champions McLaren while Red Bull's veteran consultant Helmut Marko is 82. Vettel has already been mentioned as a possible replacement. Horner's own position has been questioned, with Verstappen's father calling last year for him to go after allegations of misconduct were made by a female employee. The Briton denied them and was cleared after an investigation. "We've had two incredibly successful cycles in Formula One, and what we want to do is build towards the next cycle," said Horner, who also sang the praises of 17-year-old talent Arvid Lindblad. "Now, of course, we want that to be with Max, but we understand the pressure that there is next year, with us coming in as a new power unit manufacturer. The challenge of that is enormous." Red Bull are building their own engine, bringing everything under one roof in a bold move against major manufacturers with vast resources and years of experience in the field. "To expect us to be ahead of Mercedes next year... it would be embarrassing for Mercedes if we were, or for any manufacturer," said Horner. "But I think we're going to be in a competitive position, potentially even to where we are today relative to our other PU (power unit) manufacturers. There's everything to play for." How long Verstappen stays for the ride remains to be seen.

Martin Brundle tells Lewis Hamilton 'that's not true' in awkward exchange

All it took was one off-the-cuff comment from Lewis Hamilton to turn a Silverstone interview with Martin Brundle live on Sky Sports F1 into a very awkward exchange Martin Brundle was forced to stand up for himself when Lewis Hamilton took him by surprise. It happened during an interview at Silverstone which was broadcast live on Sky Sports F1 as the channel was previewing the British Grand Prix weekend. Hamilton is at his home race for the first time as a Ferrari driver and, while making that point, broadcasting legend and former F1 driver Brundle reminded the seven-time champion of that now iconic photograph of Hamilton wearing a dark suit and overcoat outside Enzo Ferrari's house at Maranello, released in January. ‌ Brundle said: "That image of you in the black coat in the square, the Schumacher square at Ferrari, one of the most iconic photographs ever in Formula 1." And Hamilton replied: "Thanks man. That means a lot coming from you – you don't have too many positive things always to say." ‌ The Ferrari racer smiled as he said it, but still that response clearly caught Brundle off-guard and, in the moment, he felt he had to defend himself, replying: "Well, that's not true." In his role as a pundit, Brundle has commented many times this year on Hamilton's struggles since making the move to Ferrari. He has yet to stand on a Grand Prix podium while wearing red this year and, at times, the 40-year-old has been very negative about his own performances. But Brundle has also been a key ally at stages of Hamilton's racing career, including when he was a youngster when the former F1 racer stepped in and helped Hamilton's father Anthony to navigate some challenging contract issues. As for Hamilton's current situation, things are starting to look up. A Ferrari car upgrade helped the Brit to feel more comfortable in the car last time out at the Austrian Grand Prix, where he was able to match his best result to date by finishing fourth. ‌ He brought the momentum he gained from that into his home race this weekend and started strongly on Friday, ending both practice sessions in the top three to raise hopes of another fairytale result at Silverstone where he has already won a record nine times in his F1 career. "It was a really good day. Great to see the crowd, amazing to be out on track in a Ferrari here at Silverstone," Hamilton said. "And also the Red Bull and McLaren have an upgrade, so for us to be in the mix still given they have had a step today is really positive. "Definitely feel we can dream of having a strong weekend but putting it all together and extracting it is another thing. But I will prepare myself the best I can to make sure we get the best result. Tomorrow and Sunday there is rain coming as well."
