RAF raises alarm over rise in motor vehicle accidents among young South Africans

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) has revealed that it has recorded a significant increase in young people being involved motor vehicle accidents.
Over the last five years, the RAF has pronounced that it has recorded a 43.5% rise in personal claims from individuals aged 15 to 35 with 70,743 claims having been submitted by this age group while claims filed by those younger than 15 years old reported to have totalled an additional 15,227.
South Africa is reported to have one of the highest rates of fatal traffic accidents in the world, with road users being four times more likely to die in accidents compared to the global average with reports suggesting that South Africa records no less than 24.5 fatal traffic accidents per 100 000 people while the global average is just 6.3 per 100 000.
This comes as the fund has in the past five years recoded a staggering 43.5% increase in personal claims from the ages of 15-35.
"In the past five years, a staggering 43.5% of personal claims submitted to the Road Accident Fund (RAF) were from individuals aged 15-35, totaling 70,743 claims. Claimants under 15 years old filed an additional 15,227 claims, further highlighting the vulnerability of young people on our roads. These alarming figures underscore the need for increased road safety awareness and action," its spokesperson, McIntosh Polela said.
Polela has revealed that from 2019 to 2023, there has been more than 24 000 young people killed in motor vehicle accidents with pedestrians accounting for 38% of the incidents.
"Road accidents are a leading cause of death for young people, contributing to approximately 41% of all road fatalities, averaging 4,620 deaths annually. Young people are often injured or killed when not behind the wheel, as pedestrians (38%) or passengers (35%). From 2019 to 2023, 24,098 young people were tragically killed on South African roads in the 15 - 34 age group.
'The high number of young people injured and killed on our roads is deeply troubling. Human error is a major factor, and South Africans, especially the youth, must reflect on their behaviour and make better choices.'

Minister of Police cautions against speculation over National Police Commissioner's alleged arrest

Dumisani Khumalo, the head of the Crime Intelligence division within the South African Police Service (Saps) and seven others have been linked to the probe into the alleged looting of the Crime Intelligence secret service account as well as the appointment of 30-year-old Dineo Mokwele to an executive position within Crime Intelligence in April last year. It is reported that Mokwele was appointed to the position despite her having no policing capabilities, knowledge or skills. Khumalo and his co-accused, who were arrested on Thursday, are charged with four counts of corruption and fraud were released on bail following their appearance before the Pretoria Magistrates Court. Khumalo was arrested amid reports by authorities that his arrest comes after an 'extensive' investigation into the allegedly unlawful acquisition of two high-value properties. However, Masemola's involvement has been denied by the National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) which has indicated that it is not in the process of arresting or obtaining an arrest warrant for the National Police Commissioner. The reports had indicated that Masemola could be arrested for the irregular procurement of crime intelligence buildings worth more than R120 million. "As the Ministry of Police, we have not been made aware of such impending arrest. We have also noted the response from the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) on this speculation. We plead with the media to avoid any speculation on this as speculation of this nature has an adverse impact on the named person and also has an effect of destabilising the work of the South African Police Service," Mogotsi said.
