Deadly crash raises new questions about safety of New York's helicopter tours
But Thursday's crash that killed a family of five visiting from Spain and the helicopter's pilot, a Navy SEAL veteran, has renewed concerns about the safety of the popular sightseeing excursions. Since 2005, five helicopters on commercial sightseeing flights have fallen into the Hudson and East rivers as a result of mechanical failures, pilot errors or collisions, killing 20 people.
Longtime opponents have revived calls to ban or limit 'nonessential' helicopter flights, including the roughly 30,000 sightseeing rides over the city each year.
Mayor Eric Adams on Friday said he doesn't support further restrictions on the aircraft, saying they're crucial for everything from transporting Wall Street executives to police work, and that tens of thousands of tourist flights happen each year with no problems.
'People want to see the city from the sky,' he said on WINS radio, though he added that 'it must be done right.' The Democrat said the city's airspace is highly regulated, pilots are well-trained and the aircraft are well maintained. Not everyone has his level of comfort.
'Personally, I don't go on them,' Al Yurman, a former investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, said of helicopter tours. 'I feel like the industry doesn't look after itself the way it should.' Tourist flights seemed like they might be in jeopardy after a disaster in 2009, when a Liberty Helicopters sightseeing flight carrying Italian visitors collided with a private plane over the Hudson River, killing nine.

Definitely recommend." The top official at the tourism department, K. Biju, said the post was in "good humor.' "It was our way to appreciate and thank the Brits who are the biggest inbound visitors to Kerala for tourism,' Biju said. Another cartoon posted on X showed the plane enjoying snacks with a group of locals against a scenic background. There was speculation in India that the aircraft could be partially dismantled and transported in a cargo plane if repairs were unsuccesful. The U.K. Ministry of Defense dismissed the speculation in a statement.

Egypt provides free train rides for Sudanese refugees returning home
CAIRO, July 22, (AP): Hundreds of people who have been displaced by fighting in Sudan gathered Monday at the central train station in Cairo to begin a free journey home. The Egyptian government is funding train rides to Khartoum, Sudan's capital, which recently was recaptured by the Sudanese Armed Forces from its rival, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF. Sudan has been in the throes of civil war since April 2023. The battle for power between the military and the RSF has caused a humanitarian crisis. Over 40,000 people have been killed and the war has caused one of the world's largest displacement emergencies. Egypt hosts the largest number of Sudanese refugees from the war with over 1.5 million people who fled north across the border. Over 7 million have been displaced internally as the war engulfed much of the country. The RSF took Khartoum at the start of the fighting in 2023 and held the capital until the government declared its recapture on May 20. Khartoum was largely destroyed, including the presidential palace and the airport, but is experiencing a slow rebirth as residents return and markets reopen. Electricity and basic services are not fully operational around the city. The journey from Cairo to Khartoum is about 2,080 kilometers (1,292 miles) and will include a train ride of about 12 hours to the southern Egyptian city of Aswan, where riders will change to ferries and buses to cross into Sudan. People packed their lives in small suitcases as they as they filled the train Monday. Some cried with "overwhelming emotions' including sadness and joy about leaving Egypt and returning home, said Sudanese journalist Asem al-Taieb, one of the train riders. "I am happy because I am finally going back to my family and my children,' said Awatef al Hassan, originally from Omdurman, Sudan, who is returning with her daughter.

Flash floods kill 3 tourists and 15 missing in northern Pakistan
PESHAWAR, Pakistan, July 22, (AP): Flash floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains swept away several vehicles carrying tourists in northern Pakistan, killing at least three people and leaving 15 others missing, officials said on Tuesday. Pakistani rescue officials say the above-normal monsoon rains since June 26 have killed at least 225 people and injured more than 500 across the country. Experts say climate change is driving an increase in extreme weather events in the region. A cloudburst caused floods and landslides on Monday, stranding more than 200 local tourists after a key highway near the northern Chilas district was blocked, said Faizullah Faraq, a government spokesperson in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. Army helicopters were used in the evacuation, which included women and children, he said. Several vehicles had been buried under the rubble of landslides and rescuers are using heavy machinery to find the missing tourists and residents, Faraq said. Three bodies have been recovered. The National Disaster Management Authority issued an updated flood days before, warning against travel to northern areas due to potential landslides and blocked roads. Earlier this month, authorities warned they cannot rule out a repeat of extreme weather like the 2022 floods that submerged a third of the country and killed 1,737 people.
