Southwest Airlines flight headed to Las Vegas takes dramatic plunge in response to nearby aircraft
LAS VEGAS — A Southwest Airline jet heading to Las Vegas from Southern California took a dramatic plunge shortly after takeoff Friday in response to an alert about a nearby plane, injuring two flight attendants, authorities and passengers said.
Southwest flight 1496 was responding to an onboard alert about another aircraft in its vicinity, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The FAA is investigating.
The crew responded to two air alerts that required the pilot to climb then descend, Southwest said in a statement. The flight departed from Hollywood Burbank Airport just before noon.
Passengers posted on social media that the plane took a dramatic drop soon after takeoff. Data from the flight tracking site FlightAware shows it dropped roughly 300 feet (91.44 meters) in 36 seconds.
'Pilot said his collision warning went off & he needed to avoid plane coming at us,' comedian Jimmy Dore posted on X.
The plane was in the same airspace near Burbank as a Hawker Hunter Mk. 58 just after noon local time, FlightAware shows. A Hawker Hunter is a British fighter plane. Records show its owned by Hawker Hunter Aviation Ltd, a British defense contracting company. The company didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment.
Mike Christensen, an airport spokesman for Hollywood Burbank, said that neither the control tower or the operations department, which tracks planes departing and arriving, have any record of the Southwest flight plunging in their airspace.
Southwest said the flight continued to Las Vegas, 'where it landed uneventfully.' The airline said that it is working with the FAA 'to further understand the circumstances' of the event.
This close call is just the latest incident to raise questions about aviation safety in the wake of January's midair collision over Washington, D.C., that killed 67 people.

Social Sharing Friends of a man killed when his single-engine plane crashed in Manitoba field on Saturday say he was a knowledgeable and passionate pilot who had just earned his recreational pilot licence earlier this spring. On Sunday, the Winnipeg chapter of the Experimental Aviation Association posted a statement on Facebook mourning the loss of member Peter Toth. Chapter president James Slade said Toth was one of the group's "most active members," who was always keen to share his aircraft expertise and passion for small planes, including on his "Challenger 2 Aircraft Adventures" page on YouTube. "He was just delightful to be around because he was extremely knowledgeable. You could ask him about virtually any topic and he would have something to say about it — and he was informed on it as well." Slade said Toth was thrilled to receive his recreational flying permit and was working toward his float rating to fly seaplanes. "He completed the recreational permit and he just got that this spring. He was so proud to see that he had completed the coursework and the flight training for it." Slade said Toth was meticulous when it came to working on planes, helping others while fixing up his own aircraft. "He would always be the one I would ask to double check my work if we was around," Slade said. "He was always very conscious about getting things done right." Slade confirmed that it was Toth's Quad City Challenger II ultralight aircraft that crashed in a field near Dugald, Man., on Saturday morning. Slade said Toth's plane was scheduled to fly that day and his plane was missing from the hangar. The body of a man was recovered from the plane, RCMP said in a news release on Sunday. Witness Darrin Bonnett was driving toward Winnipeg on Highway 15 when he saw the plane plummet. "Just out of the corner of my eye, I saw something coming down from the sky. As I looked over, there was what appeared to be an aircraft spiralling straight down towards the ground," he said. Bonnett, who's trained as an emergency medical responder, said he pulled over to call 911 and stayed on the line with the dispatcher as he jumped out of his vehicle and headed to the crash site. He described the scene as "carnage." "Had I not seen it come down from the sky, I would not have assumed it was an airplane from the wreckage that I saw. It was just a twisted wreck," Bonnet said.

All six people on the sailing boat were pulled from the water by responders, and four kids were rushed to a nearby hospital where two were pronounced dead upon arrival, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicholas Strasburg, a spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard. The six — one adult and five kids — were in their last week of the sailing camp for kids from 7 to 15 years old, according to the Miami Yacht Club. 'The entire MYC family is devastated by this terrible tragedy,' said Emily Copeland, the commodore of the yacht club, in a statement. Two of the six who were rescued were in 'good condition,' Strasburg said. Last year, there were over 550 deaths in recreational boating, of which 43 were caused by vessels crashing into each other, according to Coast Guard statistics. The boats collided near Star Island, which runs between Miami Beach and Miami in Biscayne Bay, said Arielle Callender, a regional spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, in a statement. Police confirm 2 dead after weekend small-plane crash near Deer Lake airport
Two people died after a small plane crashed near a west Newfoundland airport over the weekend, say police. In a statement released Monday, the RCMP said there were two people on board the aircraft that crashed near the Deer Lake Regional Airport on Saturday. The pilot, a 54-year-old man, and the lone passenger, a 27-year-old man, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The RCMP said at approximately 5:35 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to reports a plane had crashed near the Trans-Canada Highway near the airport. In response, the police closed the highway for hours to help get emergency personnel to the site, the RCMP said. Officers are continuing to secure the site to preserve potential evidence and keep the public safe, as well as supporting Transportation Safety Board of Canada investigators, the statement said. The crash is still under investigation.
