Suriname's National Assembly newly-elected chairman Ashwin Adhin takes oath in Sanskrit
He is now the second leader in Suriname to take his oath in Sanskrit.
The Indian Embassy in Suriname shared a video on the social media platform X, which showed Adhin taking the oath.
In a post on X, the Indian Embassy in Suriname stated, "Newly elected the Chairman of the National Assembly, Mr. Adhin, became the second leader in Suriname who took his oath in Sanskrit, a classical language of India."

India's Ambassador to Suriname, Subhash Gupta, attended the inaugural session of Suriname's National Assembly (NA) on June 29, during which Ashwin Adhin was elected as the NA Chairman. Subhash Gupta congratulated Ashwin Adhin for his election.

Earlier in 2020, Suriname's President Chandrikapersad 'Chan' Santokhi took oath in the Sanskrit language during his inauguration ceremony.
India and Suriname share close, warm, and friendly relations, reinforced by cultural and people-to-people contacts, which are bridged by the Indian Diaspora's arrival dating back to one and a half centuries, according to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Suriname.
Several high-level visits have been exchanged since the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Suriname in 1976, with the Indian Embassy opened in Paramaribo in 1977 and the Surinamese Embassy in New Delhi in 2000. According to the Indian Embassy in Suriname, the Indian diaspora currently constitutes over 27 per cent of Suriname's population of about 6.2 lakhs.

"A team from the Indian Consulate in Jeddah met him, ensured his well-being, and facilitated his return to India," the Embassy said in the post. According to a Reuters report, the Greek operator of the vessel, Cosmoship Management, confirmed that 10 crew members have been rescued so far, while 10 others remain missing. The Eternity C was the second Greek-owned ship to be attacked and sunk by the Iran-backed Houthis last week. The attack is part of the group's continuing attempts to disrupt global shipping through the Red Sea, which is a crucial trade route for oil and other commodities. The Indian Embassy also noted that Dassayan was working as a security guard aboard the ship and he was safely evacuated thanks to the quick efforts of the Saudi authorities. As per Al Jazeera the incidents are a revival of a Houthi campaign launched in November 2023 after the start of Israel's war on Gaza. More than 100 ships have since been attacked in operations the Houthis say are in solidarity with Palestinians, the outlet reported. The Red Sea region has seen repeated attacks by Houthi militants in recent months, targeting vessels they claim are linked to Israel, the US, or allied nations.

PM Modi conferred with Trinidad and Tobago's highest honour
Port of Spain : Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with 'The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago' (ORTT) on Friday, the highest honour of the nation, during a ceremonial event at the President's House in Port of Spain. President of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Kangaloo, presented PM Modi with the award as he becomes the first foreign leader to be honoured with the award. This is the 25th international honour bestowed upon PM Modi by any country. PM Modi stated he accepted the award on behalf of the 140 crore Indians. "I accept it on behalf of 140 crore Indians," he stated in a post on X. PM Modi began his first official visit to Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday (local time) with a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Piarco International Airport, where he was received by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar along with 38 ministers and four Members of Parliament of the Caribbean nation.
