French Lamarckism beats Darwinism in China's groundbreaking study on evolution

scientists have revived a long-dismissed evolutionary theory by proving that acquired traits can shape heredity – no DNA changes required.
According to a landmark study published in the esteemed scientific journal Cell, rice plants subjected to cold stress passed on an adaptive tolerance to low temperatures across five generations, bypassing the genetic mutations that are central to Darwinism.
The breakthrough reignites the 19th-century rivalry between French naturalist
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck – whose 'giraffe theory' proposed that organisms can pass on learned survival traits – and Charles Darwin's ideas about random genetic variation.
The research not only mirrored Lamarck's famed giraffe-neck parable, by pinpointing heritable DNA methylation changes as the driver of cold adaptation in crops, it also challenges modern biology to reconcile epigenetics with evolution's core principles.
The team, led by researchers from the
Chinese Academy of Sciences , showed that rice varieties from China's frosty northeast exhibited these stable, non-genetic adaptations – positioning Lamarckism as a potent, if partial, force in evolution's playbook.
'We demonstrate that environmentally induced epigenetic variation contributes to the inheritance of an acquired characteristic,' the team said, in a paper published in the peer-reviewed life sciences journal on May 22.

China rolls out record-setting turbine for Tibet hydropower plant

China is ready to install a large impulse turbine at the Datang Zala Hydropower Station in Tibet autonomous region , according to the official Science and Technology Daily. The home-grown turbine, with a maximum capacity of 500 megawatts, has the world's largest single-unit capacity, according to the report on Wednesday. Two turbines will be installed at the station. The 80-tonne turbine left its developer plant at Harbin Electric Machinery Company in northeast China on Wednesday after four years of design and testing. The Datang Zala Hydropower Station is located on the Yuqu River, a tributary of the Nu River, which flows from southwest China through Yunnan province to eastern Myanmar and empties into the Andaman Sea. The turbine is made of martensitic steel, a type of stainless steel known for its durability, strength and corrosion resistance. It has 21 water buckets and an outer diameter measuring 6.23 metres (20 feet). Science and Technology Daily called the turbine the 'heart' of the hydropower unit.

China could be about to attempt a landmark satellite refuelling test

China's first satellite-to-satellite refuelling test appears to be imminent after a second round of close-proximity operations between two probes in high orbit on Monday. The landmark Chinese mission will be one of the most ambitious attempts at autonomous satellite servicing in geostationary orbit, which rival the United States has yet to achieve. On Monday, the Shijian-21 and Shijian-25 spacecraft – both orbiting at an altitude of 35,786km (22,236 miles) above the equator – came within extremely close range after days of closing in on each other, according to Swiss space surveillance firm s2a Systems. The optical tracking image shows the two satellites nearly indistinguishable from each other, suggesting they may be about to attempt docking and potentially even conduct the refuelling and servicing test that is the primary mission of the Shijian-25. The two satellites had a similar encounter on June 13, when they reportedly came within 1km of each other before separating 90 minutes later. It said the mission aimed to verify capabilities for maintaining and prolonging the operational lifespan of satellites already in orbit as a way to reduce costs, improve sustainability and to help address growing concerns over space debris.
