GOF seizes 100,000 sticks of smuggled cigarettes

KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) 7th Battalion seized about 100,000 sticks of contraband cigarettes estimated to be worth RM222,000 after stopping a suspicious vehicle in Kampung Bunut Sarang Burung under Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan on Friday.
GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the seizure was conducted at 6am after the suspect fled and left the vehicle by the roadside.
He said an inspection found 100,000 sticks of white cigarettes in the suspect's vehicle and were believed to be for sale in the local market.
"All the cigarettes were handed over to the Tumpat district police headquarters for further action and this case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 108(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said in a statement today.

KANGAR, July 20 (Bernama) -- The General Operations Force (GOF) seized 2,646 cartons of frozen chicken feet worth RM317,520 in a foiled smuggling attempt near the Duty-Free Complex on Jalan Baru Sadao, Padang Besar last Friday. Northern Brigade GOF Commander SAC Shahrum Hashim said the operation, carried out by the 18th Battalion under 'Op Taring Wawasan Kedah/Perlis', followed a tip-off on suspicious activity in the area. Officers found a Volvo container lorry transferring cargo to two Thailand-registered pickup trucks. A search revealed the frozen poultry products, believed to be headed for a neighbouring country.

North Johor Baru district police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said the incident occurred at about 11.27am when a car driven by a 48-year-old local man was believed to have lost control before hitting the left rear of a lorry. "The car, believed to be travelling from Johor Baru to Skudai, was carrying a 27-year-old Singaporean male passenger. "As a result of the collision, the car driver suffered serious head injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene, while his passenger died while receiving treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA), Johor Bahru," he said in a statement today. Meanwhile, he said the lorry driver, a 28-year-old local man, did not suffer any injuries. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. He also called on the public with information regarding the incident to contact the Investigating Officer, Inspector Zulhisyam Aziz at 019-7432966 to assist in the investigation.
