Elderly farmer pulls plough in Latur with wife's help, can't afford to rent oxen
Ambadas Pawar, a 75-year-old of Hadoalti village in the drought-prone Marathwada region, started sowing for the cotton crop recently. "The daily rent for a pair of oxen, for kharif farm work, is Rs 2,500 at present. I had to take a loan of Rs 20,000 for kharif sowing in addition to an earlier loan of Rs 40,000 for agricultural needs. Now, I have no money left for the rented oxen. I have no choice but to pull the plough," he said.
Pawar added that multiple extreme weather events in his area severely affected his agricultural produce and caused heavy losses. "We also did not get the expected market prices for our agricultural yield. Even if I am out of money, I cannot give up on cotton cultivation this kharif season," he added.
Muktabai said she feels pained to see her husband working hard at his age. "We solely depend on agriculture to make ends meet.
We are getting burdened due to the loans. There is no one to pay heed to our woes," she said.
A video of the septuagenarian farmer pulling the traditional wooden plough, with his wife, Muktabai, guiding him from behind, left many heartbroken. The couple's son, who is in his 40s, completed his ITI course and is currently employed with a private firm in Pune in a low-paid job. His wife and two young children stay in the village with Ambadas and Muktabai.
Latur district is experiencing a 40% rainfall deficiency this monsoon. The rainfall gap has resulted in weed growth in farms, forcing farmers to put in extra efforts to remove weeds from their farms.
After Ambadas's video got circulated widely, state agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate spoke to the elderly farmer and assured him of govt help. Kokate told reporters, "I have instructed the local agriculture department officer to contact Ambadas Pawar and offer all possible assistance to the couple."

Little food: Congress leader flags abuse in Bengal rehab centre to Mamata Banerjee
Congress leader and former Union Minister Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding a thorough investigation into alleged malpractices and inhumane treatment at de-addiction centres across the the letter, Chowdhury alleged that some police stations are financially involved with certain de-addiction centres and that 'looting is taking place in the name of de-addiction.' He wrote, 'There is information that some police stations have financial dealings with certain de-addiction centres and looting is taking place in the name of de-addiction. People kept in these centres are subjected to severe mental torture.'advertisementChowdhury also detailed serious instances of abuse and torture within these centres. 'Those who are put in and stay in the Punishment Room face brutal abuse. They are given very little food, and four people are forced to bathe together naked, that too within a time span of 1 to 2 minutes,' he said. Chaudhary further claimed that the inmates lack basic human rights and hygiene facilities. 'The inmates do not have enough space to sleep properly, and are not allowed to use the toilet whenever they need to, with access allowed only once every 3 hours, and that too, for a short duration. They are made to drink water from the tube-well which is foul-smelling and unhygienic,' Chowdhury also accused the centres of extorting the families of the inmates. 'When a family member visits an inmate, a fee of Rs 400 is charged for the meeting. In the case of each in-mate, exorbitant amounts of money are demanded, ranging from Rs 8,000 in some cases to Rs 24,000, which can stretch up to even Rs 47,000. At the time of release, an additional Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 is charged. Thus, basically, they extract as much money as they possibly can from each person,' the letter that many of the people admitted to these centres have no history of drug use, Chowdhury said, 'There are many innocent people who have no involvement with drug use whatsoever and are yet falsely implicated and sent to these 'homes'. Huge sums of money are being earned by those running the centres, with the connivance of those in Authority.'He specifically named Disha Home in Berhampore, located near Panchanantala, as one of the centres allegedly involved in such concluded his letter by urging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to launch a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#West Bengal

CM Yogi asks farmers to take carbon credit benefit by planting trees
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday asked public representatives to encourage farmers to undertake large-scale tree plantation on the boundaries of their fields, saying doing so will help them receive benefits under the carbon credit scheme. Addressing a meeting of gram pradhans, mayors, district panchayat chairpersons through video conferencing amid the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' tree plantation campaign, the chief minister said that farmers in seven divisions of the state are set to receive about Rs 42 lakh as carbon credit this year. While the month-long 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' plantation drive began on Saturday, the UP government has set a target of record plantation of 37 crore saplings in a single day on July 9. Stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, the chief minister said that under the carbon credit system, farmers will receive $5 after the survey. According to the CM, Rs 32.80 lakh was paid to farmers as carbon credit last year, and this year, farmers in Devipatan, Ayodhya, Jhansi, Mirzapur, Kanpur, Varanasi and Aligarh divisions are set to get Rs 42.20 lakh. He also said that under the program, moringa or sahjan plant saplings are being distributed to malnourished families. Claiming that in the eight years of his government, the forest cover in the state has increased from 9 per cent to 10 per cent, the CM said that UP ranks second in India in terms of green cover growth. 'From 2017 to 2024, UP has seen an increase of 5 lakh acres in green cover. And from 2017 to 2023, there has been an increase of 3.38 lakh acres in green cover,' the CM told the public representatives. Urging public representatives to undertake the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign as a public movement and spreading awareness, he stressed the importance of everyone participating in the plantation campaign 'to ensure a better environment for future generations'. He also asked public representatives to undertake the tree plantation drive along rivers, ponds, and in urban parks and open spaces. This year's plantation drive is expected to be the biggest to date, with involvement of 25 crore citizens.

Veena visits Bindhu's kin, assures aid
Kottayam: A day after opposition parties staged statewide protests demanding her resignation, health minister Veena George visited the family of D Bindu, the 52-year-old woman who had died after a portion of a building at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam, collapsed three days ago. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now George reached Bindu's residence in Thalayolaparambu early on Sunday and spent time with her grieving family, including Bindhu's mother, husband, and children. Bindu had been staying at the hospital to care for her daughter, who was admitted as an inpatient, when she was trapped under the debris. The minister assured the family that the govt would cover the full cost of their daughter's surgery, with further treatment decisions to be taken after a medical board meeting on Monday. She added that the state would also consider the family's other demands, including compensation and a job for Bindu's son. "As far as I'm concerned, this family's sorrow is my sorrow. I met her husband, mother, and other relatives and shared their grief. The govt will stand by them in every possible way," George said, adding that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan would announce the relief measures after a state cabinet decision. Bindu's husband, Visruthan, said that the family was hopeful about govt support and stated that the family is satisfied with the interventions made by the authorities. CPM state committee member K Anil Kumar, who accompanied the minister, also promised assistance for completing the family's house construction. Meanwhile, Kottayam MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan demanded Rs 25 lakh in compensation for the family, a permanent job for Bindu's son and free treatment for her daughter. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now At a press conference, he said the hospital management committee hadn't met in two years. "Yet funds were spent. The public deserves an explanation," he said. He also called for the immediate commissioning of 12 operation theatres, highlighting that only four are functional and two of those lack sterility. "Ward 26 is leaking, a new building caught fire in 2023 and safety regulations were ignored," he alleged. UDF leader Ramesh Chennithala, who also visited Bindu's home, demanded a safety audit of all state govt hospital buildings. He criticized the health minister for fearing protests and avoiding a daylight visit to Bindu's residence. "People are unhappy with the health department's reckless actions," he stated. "There's no medicine or basic supplies, forcing doctors to treat poor patients only if they bring their own. We have good doctors, but what can they do without medicines?"
