M&S' food sales growth slows after cyberattack, says NielsenIQ

LONDON: British retailer Marks & Spencer's (M&S) food business recorded a slowdown in sales growth to 9.1 per cent year-on-year in the 12 weeks to June 14, reflecting the aftermath of a cyberattack in April, according to data from researcher NielsenIQ released on Wednesday.
NielsenIQ said the growth was down from 10.8 per cent in last month's report and 14.7 per cent in the prior one.
M&S' market share ticked up by 10 basis points year-on-year to 3.7 per cent, but slipped from 3.8 per cent in the previous month's reading.
In response to the cyberattack, M&S had halted online clothing orders and disabled other systems, which impacted food availability and led to higher waste and logistics costs.
Last month, M&S estimated the attack would result in a loss of about £300 million (US$409 million) in operating profit.
The group resumed online clothing orders on June 10 after a 46-day suspension following the incident.
NielsenIQ's data largely aligned with a separate report by rival researcher Kantar released on Tuesday, which showed strong performances from market leader Tesco, number two Sainsbury's, and online grocer Ocado.
However, M&S is not fully included in Kantar's market share data set.

MACC targets RM4.5 bil in undeclared Daim assets across five countries

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has uncovered undeclared assets worth at least RM4.5 bil linked to the late former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, his family, and proxies in five countries — the US, Singapore, Japan, Italy, and Jersey (a British island near France). These assets include condominiums, commercial buildings, bank accounts, a hotel in Japan, and a shopping mall in Italy. MACC plans to seek restraining orders to freeze them, with assistance from foreign authorities. 'All of these assets and properties were not declared to MACC during investigations conducted in 2023. Therefore, a restraining order will be sought soon, with help from the relevant countries,' a source said. Earlier, MACC froze seven properties and one bank account in the UK worth RM758.2 million, believed to be owned by Daim's wife, Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid, and her family. MACC found that the assets are linked to alleged offences under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001. However, on June 23, the Kuala Lumpur High Court temporarily suspended the freezing order after Daim's wife successfully challenged it through her lawyer, Datuk Dr Gurdial Singh Nijar. MACC is also seeking to seize Ilham Tower in Kuala Lumpur and has opened eight investigation papers based on new information from foreign agencies regarding Daim's undeclared assets during the 2023 probe. —June 29, 2025 Main image: Malay Mail

INV new material's RM3.2bil Penang plant boosts Malaysia's EV hub ambitions

KUALA LUMPUR: China's INV New Material Technology (M) Sdn Bhd has launched its RM3.2 billion manufacturing facility in Penang, marking a significant milestone in Malaysia's push to become Southeast Asia's leading electric vehicle (EV) hub. The plant, which produces lithium-ion battery separators, is the first commercial facility of its kind in the country, firmly positioning Malaysia as the region's largest producer of this critical EV component. The newly launched facility will produce 1.3 billion square metres of wet-processed and coated lithium-ion separators. The project has generated over 2,000 job opportunities, including over 500 high-skilled technical roles with wages exceeding RM3,000 per month. It serves as a launchpad for technology and knowledge transfer, equipping Malaysian talent with practical exposure to advanced equipment, structured training programmes and collaboration with global experts. This holistic approach significantly upskills the workforce in advanced materials and engineering plastics, cultivating a future-ready talent pipeline vital for the nation's long-term growth in the EV and high-tech sectors. The plant also sets a benchmark in Industry 4.0 adoption as it integrates advanced automation, smart manufacturing systems, and digital technologies to maximise operational efficiency, enhance precision and promote sustainable practices. Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said the launch of the facility marks a transformative step in the country's electric vehicle journey. He said the investment, anchored in the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the Chemical Industry Roadmap 2030, bridges a critical gap in the local EV ecosystem and embeds advanced materials into the supply chain. "It sets a new standard for high-tech manufacturing while strategically catalysing broader industrial growth and attracting more global and local players to strengthen Malaysia's position in the global EV value chain," he added. INV New Material Technology chief executive officer Liu Rui said that beyond investment, the plant is a long-term commitment to sustainability, innovation and talent development. "Malaysia offers the strategic advantages, talent pool, and government support we need to make this vision a reality, and we are proud to call it home to our first facility in the Asean region," he said.

Korean star Se-young close to million-dollar deal but it's still quiet for Pearly-Thinaah

South Korea's An Se-young celebrates after beating China's Wang Zhiyi in the women's singles final in the Malaysian Open this year at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star PETALING JAYA: Top South Korean women singles star An Se-young it seems is close to signing a lucrative sponsorship deal with Yonex but there is still no resolution for Malaysia's women's doubles duo Pearly Tan-M in relation to their contracts. The world No. 3 Pearly-Thinaah have still yet to sign new deals with BAM after their contracts expired last December. It is learnt that the BA of Malaysia have had discussions but yet to finalise the contract matters with the reigning Thailand Open champions Pearly-Thinaah. It seems the pair, who reached the semi-finals of the Paris Olympic Games last year, have been offered a better deal outside and could turn professionals. Meanwhile, according to reports that has been circulating recently, the 23-year-old Se-young is on the verge of signing a deal worth around US$1.44 million per year. The Korean Badminton Association (KBA) allow national players to sign individual sponsorships, a landmark decision which they made in May this year. Earlier, Yonex had been fighting with Li Ning to secure the world No. 1 Se-young under their banner. Se-young is in high demand after winning the Paris Olympic gold last year and the world title in 2023 and is currently the best player in the circuit.
