Musk's fondness for sex and drugs made him prime Russian target in blackmail plot: Ex-FBI

Hindustan Times17-05-2025
A former FBI agent recently admitted that Tesla CEO Elon Musk and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel have been prime Russian targets since the Ukraine conflict started. Ex-Counterintelligence Special Agent Jonathan Buma further added that intelligence was gathered on the two men to be used as blackmail later.
Burma was speaking on a documentary released by German Television Broadcaster ZDF. He said that Musk's susceptibility to women, sex, and drugs made him a prime Russian target. The billionaire's apparent fondness for the desert rave scene Burning Man, adult entertainment and gambling was a 'possible entry point' for agents to reach him, he explained.
'Musk's susceptibility to promiscuous women and drug use, particularly ketamine… were seen by Russian intelligence as an opportunity for an agent to exploit,' Burma told the documentary makers.
The former FBI agent served 16 years as a counterintelligence officer for the FBI before being arrested in March and charged by federal prosecutors with one count of 'Disclosure of Confidential Information'. He was accused of sharing classified information with a publishing company. He posted a $100,000 bail.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Musk and Russian President Vladimir Putin have been in direct contact since at least 2022, when the conflict with Ukraine started.
Jonathan Burma added that Putin was behind the contact with Musk and Thiel. The agents would not have gotten involved in the blackmail plot had the Russian president not known about the action and approved it, he noted.
Burma, however, did not reveal his source.
Musk has had a complicated history with Ukraine. The Tesla founder initially supported Kyiv in its war with Russia by offering his Starlink satellite internet service free of charge to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He, however, later threatened to revoke the access.
In 2024, Elon Musk, along with President Donald Trump, questioned Ukraine's leadership. The 53-year-old currently serves as Trump's senior adviser and leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is running a cost-cutting operation across federal agencies.

Germany's Puma revises 2025 outlook amid sales dip & tariff impact

German sports apparel and footwear company Puma has reported preliminary results in the second quarter (Q2) of 2025, witnessing a currency-adjusted (ca) decline of 2 per cent in its sales to reach €1,942 million. Currency headwinds significantly impacted reported figures, reducing sales by approximately €135 million, or 8.3 per cent. The gross profit margin declined 70 basis points (bps) to 46.1 per cent due to increased promotional activity and adverse currency effects. The adjusted EBIT of the company fell to €13.2 million, further impacted by lower margins. The company reported one-time costs of €84.6 million (~$99 million). The quarter closed with a net loss of €247 million (~$291.46 million). North America was down by 9.1 per cent YoY, Europe saw a decline of 3.9 per cent YoY, and Greater China went down by 3.9 per cent, while Latin America was up 16.1 per cent and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EEMEA) increased by 0.5 per cent, Puma said in a press release. Puma has reported a 2 per cent sales decline in Q2 2025 to €1.94 billion (~$2.27 billion), with net loss at €247 million (~$291.46 million) due to lower margins and €84.6 million (~$99 million) in one-time costs. H1 sales dropped 1 per cent to €4.02 billion (~$4.70 billion). Weakened wholesale, US tariffs, and inventory build-up led to a revised forecast: full-year sales are now expected to decline. Segment-wise, wholesale business saw a declining performance of 6.3 per cent, offsetting a 9.2 per cent increase in direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales, with e-commerce seeing double-digit growth. Category-wise, footwear grew 5.1 per cent, but this was offset by declines in apparel, which fell by 10.7 per cent, and accessories, which declined by 6.4 per cent. For the first half (H1) of 2025, preliminary sales dropped 1 per cent to €4.02 billion (~$4.7 billion) a drop of 4.8 per cent on reported basis, with adjusted EBIT at €62.5 million and one-time costs totalling €102.6 million. The net loss stood at €246.6 million. Inventories surged 18.3 per cent currency-adjusted to €2,151 million, driven by higher levels in key markets. Puma has revised its full-year guidance. Currency-adjusted sales have been forecast to decline by a low double-digit percentage (previously: a low- to mid-single-digit increase). EBIT for full-year 2025 has been expected to result in a loss (previously: €445 million to €525 million), reflecting softer topline performance, intensified currency headwinds, the impact of US tariffs, and additional one-off measures aimed at cost base alignment in H2 2025. An earnings outlook has been provided for reported EBIT only. Following the second-quarter results and the subdued growth outlook for the remainder of 2025, capital expenditure plans have been revised to around €250 million (previously: approximately €300 million). Avoid travel to 7 provinces: India's advisory on Thailand amid clash with Cambodia

The Indian Embassy in Thailand on Friday issued an advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid travel to seven provinces amid escalating violence along the Thailand-Cambodia border. The advisory follows a sharp intensification of armed clashes in long-disputed areas, where tensions have been simmering for months.'In view of the situation near the Thailand-Cambodia border, all Indian travellers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources, including the TAT Newsroom,' the embassy said in a advisory coincided with a stark warning from Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who told reporters the situation had worsened significantly. "The current situation involves acts of intrusion and aggression that are causing harm to the people's lives. The situation has intensified and could escalate into a state of war. At present, it's a confrontation involving heavy weapons," the Prime Minister authorities have advised against travel to more than 20 locations across several provinces, including Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sisaket, Buriram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and clashes broke out along the border on Thursday, leaving at least 16 people dead and many more injured. Thailand accuses Cambodia of using BM-21 rocket systems: What are these?

Thailand's military accused rival Cambodia of using Russian-made BM-21 rocket systems as tensions between the neighbouring countries escalated on Thursday. The Thai army said Cambodian forces had used heavy artillery and Russian-made BM-21 rocket launchers, prompting what Thai officials described as 'appropriate supporting fire' in return. Several images also show Cambodian soldiers standing on a truck carrying a Russian-made BM-21 rocket launcher and travelling along a street in Oddar Meanchey province on July 25, 2025. Thailand and Cambodia fought their bloodiest military clashes in more than a decade on July 24, with at least 12 people killed as the two sides battled with tanks, artillery and ground forces over a disputed border zone. The Russian BM-21 Grad (БМ-21) is said to be a self-propelled 122mm Multiple-Launch-Rocket-System (MLRS). Simply put, it is a Soviet truck-mounted 122 mm multiple rocket launcher. The BM-21 Grad is an early Cold War era multiple rocket launcher of Soviet origin, claimed. It was developed in the early 1960s and saw its first combat in March 1969, a report claimed. BM stands for Boyevaya Mashina, meaning Combat-Vehicle. The nickname Grad means Hail. In NATO countries, the system (either the complete system or the launch vehicle only) was initially known as M1964. According to Army Recognition website, the BM-21 122 mm multiple rocket launcher (MRL) system entered into service with the Soviet Army in 1963 to replace the ageing 140 mm BM-14 system. "The main role of the BM-21 Grad system is to support the division with suppressive fire to counter anti-tank missile, artillery and mortar positions, destroy strong points and eliminate enemy nodes of resistance on the immediate battlefield," the report added. Several other countries have copied the Grad or have developed similar systems. The BM-21 GRAD is equipped with a pod of 40 launch tubes of 122 mm caliber arranged in a rectangular shape that can be turned away from the unprotected cab. The rocket launcher weapon system is mounted at the rear of the truck chassis. The launching mechanism is powered by a small generator system inside the truck. It can fire rockets directly from the cab or from a trigger at the end of a 64-meter cable. The BM-21 rockets can be either fired singly or in a salvo lasting six seconds, Army Recognition V8 petrol engine provides a maximum road speed of 75 km/h. After firing, the vehicle needs to be reloaded, which can take around 10 minutes with an experienced crew and the appropriate reloading equipment. The BM-21 Grad is the most widely used multiple rocket launcher ever developed. It was used in very large quantities by Soviet and some Warsaw Pact forces. Many systems were exported to Soviet allies in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America. Besides, many nations have developed their own improved variants. Most of these remain compatible with original Grad rockets, but also use newer and longer-range variants.
