White Sox treat low-vision teens to sensory-friendly tour of Rate Field

CBS News17-07-2025
The Chicago White Sox welcomed a special group of campers to Rate Field Thursday morning.
The visually impaired teenagers got a hands-on, sensory-friendly tour of the ballpark. They got to experience both the feel and a whiff of the dugout, tar, the rosin bags pitchers hold in their hands.
Maria Villanueva of the White Sox guest services team led the tactile tour.
Teens like Katelyn Kaechele, 17, were pleased to take part.
"We all have different levels of vision," Katelyn said. "Like, I have my central. One of the girls here is completely blind, so she uses a cane, and we all help each other in a way."
The kids are part of a low-vision day camp from the Spectrios Institute, funded by the White Sox.
"Our camp is actually named after Grandma Martyl, who is the late wife of Jerry Reinsdorf," said Jennifer Thompson of the Spectrios Institute for Low Vision.
The camp teams up with the Sox to give every kid a chance to swing for the fences and run the bases — just like the pros.
The Sox are pleased to help the campers experience the ballpark.
"It's something everybody's able to do," said Villanueva.
"Like even the ones that went all around the bases, I'm like, 'Look at you! Like coming out of your shell,'" said Thompson. "It's just a great experience for them."
Even when the Sox are away — as they presently are, preparing to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday — their home field can still offer advantage.
"I would say exhilarating. It's fun," said Katelyn. "It's like, not a lot of people get to do this."

Bubba Wallace makes NASCAR history with thrilling Brickyard 400 victory at Indianapolis

Bubba Wallace crossed the finish line first at the Brickyard 400, and he made NASCAR history in the process. Wallace became the first Black driver to ever win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway's historic oval course. It wasn't an easy race for Wallace either, as he battled through a rain delay, two overtimes, and the major concern of possibly running out of fuel toward the end with Kyle Larson right on his tail. However, Wallace came out triumphant, winning his first race since 2022. "Unbelievable," Wallace said to his team over their radio waves after passing the checkered flag. With six laps to go, Larson had cut down his gap from Wallace to just three seconds when a yellow caution flag came out due to rain. Then, a crash occurred once the drivers got back on the track, which forced a second overtime period. Wallace's team was worried that he might run out of gas due to the extra laps, but the risk was ran, and paid off for Wallace, who was able to survive the surge by Larson. The checkered flag was taken by Wallace by a 0.222-second margin to snap his 110-race winless streak. Larson was searching to be just the fourth driver to be a back-to-back winner of the Brickyard. Instead, Wallace won for the first time at one of the four crowned jewels in NASCAR. The win also secures Wallace a spot in the Cup Series Playoffs, with four events remaining until the 16-driver field is locked in for the 10-race postseason.

Mike Trout homers to reach 1,000 RBIs as Angels top Mariners 4-1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout hit a two-run homer in a four-run fifth inning to reach 1,000 career RBIs, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1 on Sunday. Kyle Hendricks (6-7) gave up one run on two hits over six-plus innings and Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 18th save as the Angels earned a split of the four-game series. Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 41st home run for the Mariners. The Angels broke a scoreless tie when Kevin Newman's grounder brought home Travis d'Arnaud in the fifth. Luis Rengifo then scored on Logan Gilbert's wild pitch. Trout crushed a 443-foot drive to center field off Gilbert to give him 1,001 RBIs. It was his 397th career homer and 19th this season. Raleigh connected against Hendricks in the seventh, his second home run in two nights and fourth this year against Los Angeles. Hendricks, who had one walk and three strikeouts, won for the first time since June 17. Gilbert (3-4) gave up four runs and three hits over five innings with seven strikeouts. Key moment Angels center fielder Jo Adell kept Seattle off the scoreboard in the sixth when he reached above the wall to take away a home run from J.P. Crawford. Key stat Trout became the third player to get his first 1,000 RBIs entirely in an Angels uniform, following Garret Anderson and Tim Salmon. Up next Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo (7-6, 3.30 ERA) pitches Monday in the opener of a three-game series on the road against the Athletics. The Angels had not announced a scheduled starter for Monday's series opener at home against Texas. ___ AP MLB:
