16 days maintenance of Hartebeeshoek Reservoir coming in July

The Citizen3 days ago

Tshwane metro has cautioned residents about planned water supply interruptions in July due to the regulatory inspection and cleaning maintenance of the Hartebeeshoek Reservoir.
According to the metro, the city has been notified by Rand Water of its 16-day planned regulatory inspection and cleaning maintenance of the Hartebeeshoek Reservoir, in compliance with the Dam Safety Regulations.
This essential maintenance work, which will affect Tshwane's reservoirs and meters supplied by the Hartebeeshoek Reservoir, is scheduled to start on Thursday, July 3, at 07:00 and is expected to be completed on Friday, July 18, at 19:00.
'According to Rand Water, their team of technicians will, in the first two days of the scheduled work, isolate and test the valves before draining the reservoir into the municipal reticulation system,' said metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba.
He said the draining process is expected to take three days.

'Once the reservoir has been emptied, the team will install a bypass valve to allow the water utility to supply water through bypassing the reservoir during the scheduled work period,' Bokaba said.
He explained that bypassing the reservoir will ensure that supply interruption is kept to a minimum, with low-lying areas continuing to receive water, albeit with low pressure.
Bokaba emphasised that high-lying areas will have no water during the work period.
'The last part of the maintenance work, according to the water utility, will be to clean the reservoir. This process is expected to take six days to complete. Thereafter, the team will disinfect the reservoir for three days before activating supply to the impacted meters.'
In addition, he said that roaming water tankers will be dispatched as and when the need arises.

To help those in need during Rand Water's scheduled maintenance period, Cast Aways Animal Sanctuary has opened its doors and taps for residents in need of water. • Also read: #WestRandWaterWatch: Plan ahead, municipality urges residents As Rand Water prepares to execute its maintenance, various cities will be left with either low water pressure and supply or no water at all, including Rand West City. Therefore, the founder of Cast Aways, Louisa Rossouw, and her dedicated team are offering their source of borehole water. According to Louisa, they have three taps available to the public. However, only three vehicles will be allowed onto the premises at a time. One of the taps can fill up a tank while the other two taps can be used to fill jugs and bottles. Anyone is welcome to come and fetch water if they are in need,' Louisa expressed. Residents can collect water from Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 15:30. On weekends, residents are welcome to collect water between 08:30 and 14:00. Make sure to visit 26 Johanna Street, Wilbotsdal. Randburg braces for major water maintenance impact

Planned maintenance on Rand Water's Eikenhof and Zwartkopjes systems from 30 June to 2 July is expected to disrupt water supply across Johannesburg, including Randburg and surrounding suburbs. According to Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala, Randburg is one of the areas that will be affected by the maintenance. Also read: Water disruptions expected during Rand Water maintenance 'Residents may experience poor pressure or no water during this period,' said Shabalala. 'Arrangements will be made for alternative supply through roaming and stationary tankers, and residents are encouraged to store water in advance.' In Ward 102, Councillor Lucinda Harman confirmed that clinics, hospitals, and retirement homes will receive top priority. 'Tankers will only start roaming after 24 hours. Please store water and avoid unnecessary usage. Schools are on holiday, and shopping centres are being monitored too,' she said. Also read: JW still has no answer for burst on Nerina Street Water will be throttled to 50% capacity, not shut off completely. However, if reservoirs aren't full before the start of the work, supply may run dry in some areas. In Ward 115, Councillor Mark van der Merwe said no major shortages are expected if residents conserve water. 'Our schools and retirement village have backup systems, and medical sites are supplied by the unaffected Bryanston Reservoir,' he explained. Residents are urged to: Limit use of dishwashers, washing machines, and baths Avoid refilling pools or washing cars Help elderly neighbours collect water Those needing JoJo tank refills can contact Somayya on 083 650 0577. A call centre number for urgent needs will also be shared.
