Croatia captain Modric signs with AC Milan after Real Madrid exit
Last week, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner would head to the San Siro from Real Madrid after the Club World Cup.
Modric, who turns 40 in September, joined Madrid from Tottenham in 2012 and had been linked with a move to Italy since early June, after announcing he would leave the Spanish giants at the end of his contract.
'AC Milan are delighted to announce Luka Modric has signed a contract with the club until 30 June 2026 with an option for a one-year extension until 30 June 2027,' the 19-time Serie A winners said.
Modric was in Milan earlier on Monday to undergo medical tests but according to Italian media will only start training with his team-mates in August.
'I'm very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career,' Modric said in a video on the club's social media platforms.
'A big hug to everyone,' he added.
Allegri is back at the helm at Milan having led them to the Serie A title in 2011 during his first spell in charge between 2010 and 2014.

Modric joins Milan in one-year deal
LONDON: Croatia captain Luka Modric, who left Real Madrid after 13 years at the LaLiga club, has completed his move to AC Milan on a one-year deal with an option to extend until June 2027, the Serie A side said on Monday. The midfielder's arrival was confirmed by newly-appointed Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri earlier this month. "Very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career," said Modric, who turns 40 in September, in an Instagram video shared by Milan. Milan said Modric will wear the number 14 shirt, which he previously wore during his four years at English side Tottenham Hotspur to honour Dutch great Johan Cruyff. "It's an immense honour for them to compare me to (Cruyff)... I wore the no. 14 at Tottenham in honour of him, and because the no. 10 wasn't available," Modric had said after winning the Ballon d'Or award in 2018. Modric, regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, announced in May that he would leave Real after the Club World Cup. He has made 597 appearances for the Spanish club, winning 28 trophies including four LaLiga and six Champions League titles. He played his last game for Real on Wednesday, coming on as a second-half substitute during a 4-0 loss to Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup semi-finals. "It's a bitter end... he's a legend of world football and of Real Madrid. He'll be remembered for many more good things than for the 25 minutes he played today," Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso said after the match. Modric, considered Croatia's greatest player of all time, has represented the country a record 188 times, scoring 28 goals. He won the Golden Ball at World Cup 2018, where he led Croatia to the final for the first time. He won the Ballon d'Or in December that year, becoming the first player other than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the prestigious annual award since 2007. Modric's arrival reinforces a Milan midfield that also features Youssouf Fofana, Yunus Musah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with Samuele Ricci joining from Torino earlier this month. Milan, who failed to qualify for a European competition after finishing eighth in the Italian top-flight league last season, begin their Serie A campaign against newly-promoted Cremonese on August 23.--REUTERS

Real Madrid sign Benfica's Carreras in €50m summer transfer deal
REAL Madrid have secured the signing of Spanish left-back Alvaro Carreras from Benfica on a six-year deal, continuing their major squad overhaul this summer. The 22-year-old defender returns to Los Blancos after previously coming through their youth academy before moving to Manchester United in 2020. The transfer fee is reported to be close to €50 million, marking another significant investment by the Spanish giants. Carreras spent the last four seasons with Benfica, making 62 appearances and scoring five goals. His initial move to the Portuguese club was on loan before they made the deal permanent for €6 million in 2024. In an official statement, Real Madrid confirmed the agreement: 'Real Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Alvaro Carreras, who will be under contract with our club for the next six seasons, until 30 June 2031.' Carreras becomes the fourth major signing for Madrid this summer, following the arrivals of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Franco Mastantuono. The total spending on these transfers is estimated at around €170 million, signaling a strong push to rebuild the squad under new management. The club has undergone major changes after a trophyless season under Carlo Ancelotti, who was replaced by Xabi Alonso. Despite reaching the Club World Cup semi-finals, Madrid suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, highlighting the need for defensive reinforcements. - AFP
