Penny stock under ₹15 surges 20% on order win from ONGC

Mint18-06-2025
Penny stock: Shares of Aakash Exploration Services surged nearly 20% on Wednesday's session after the company was issued a Letter of Award (LOI) from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC). The total value of the order is approximately ₹ 19.36 crores.
The timeframe for executing the orders is set at three years. The company has secured the Letter of Award for the charter hiring of one 50 MT workover rig for use at the Ahmedabad Asset.
This year, Aakash Exploration Services secured a contract valued at ₹ 29 crores from the Indian Maharatna Public Sector Enterprise, Oil India Limited, for the provision of a high-pressure Mobile Boiler along with necessary accessories for the production of high-quality steam. The execution of this order is scheduled to take place over a period of 2 years.
Aakash Exploration Services Limited is a company that offers services for Oil and Gas Exploration with a core mission of becoming a leader in delivering services to the Oil and Gas sector while achieving international standards of excellence. Headquartered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the company is also affiliated with the International Association of Drilling Contractors.
The net profit of Aakash Exploration Services fell by 92.02% to ₹ 0.28 crore in the quarter that ended in March 2025, compared to ₹ 3.51 crore in the quarter ending March 2024. Sales dropped by 16.57% to ₹ 25.77 crore in the quarter ended March 2025, down from ₹ 30.89 crore in the previous quarter of March 2024.
Aakash Exploration Services share price opened at an intraday low of ₹ 9.01 per share on the NSE, the stock touched an intraday high of ₹ 10.51 apiece.
According to Rajesh Bhosale, Equity Technical and Derivative Analyst at Angel One, the stock witnessed strong momentum in today's session, surging over 16% and decisively crossing above the key 200-day SMA. It has remained in focus throughout the week, and the uptrend may continue in the near term. The previous swing high near ₹ 12 acts as resistance, while immediate support is seen around ₹ 9.5.
ONGC share price rose 1.4% on Wednesday's session, the stock touched an intraday high of ₹ 255.90 apiece on the BSE, and an intraday low of ₹ 252.80 per share.
According to Anshul Jain, Head of Research at Lakshmishree Investments, ONGC has breached a 53-day-long VCP pattern with a pivot breakout at ₹ 254. While the structure lacks tightness and volume isn't deeply institutional, the setup is valid for a small-quantity positional trade.
A sustained move above ₹ 254 may lead the stock toward ₹ 268, which is also a major resistance level formed by previous swing highs. Given the loosely built structure, the move may be slow and volatile. Traders should be cautious and treat this as a mean-reversion bounce toward resistance.

Jane Street fallout: Derivatives trading volumes may be hit

The derivatives market could take a major hit in trading volumes after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) cracked down on Jane Street Capital, halting its operations in Mumbai and impounding more than half a billion dollars of local assets. ADVERTISEMENT Analysts said the regulatory action would put pressure on revenue for intermediaries dependent on derivative market activity, with volumes shrinking in response to Sebi's stiff punitive measures against one of the biggest proprietary trading firms in the segment. "Jane Street is one of the largest traders contributing to Indian markets," said Siddarth Bhamre, head of institutional research, Asit C Mehta. "When big players are banned for wrongdoing, others become cautious and reduce activity, leading to lower volumes. Traders may also face fewer counterparties, potentially causing a further drop in F&O volumes ahead." The capital market regulator has taken its toughest action ever against a foreign trading firm by targeting Jane Street, one of the world's largest quant trading firms that's also among the highest paymasters at India's top technology campuses. Highlighting the broader market implications, Zerodha Founder and CEO Nithin Kamath cautioned that action against proprietary trading firms like Jane Street, which contribute nearly half of the options trading volumes, could also dampen retail participation. "There's a flip side. Prop trading firms like Jane Street account for almost 50% of options trading volumes. If they pull back which looks likely it could also impact retail activity, which makes up about 35%. This could spell bad news for both exchanges and brokers," Kamath wrote on X. ADVERTISEMENT He added that the coming days would be crucial in gauging the fallout. "The next few days will be telling. F&O volumes might show just how dependent we are on these prop giants. I'll share more data as and when anything interesting comes up," Kamath wrote on the social media platform. ADVERTISEMENT In the wake of the Sebi order, shares of Nuvama Wealth Management, capital market service provider Central Depository Services and stock exchange BSE slumped following the regulator's Wealth shares fell the most, dropping 10.6% as the firm is Jane Street's domestic trading partner, which got caught up in the regulatory crossfire, triggering investor anxiety despite no direct accusations against the firm. Along with Nuvama Wealth, shares of BSE fell 6.4%, while CDSL plunged 2%. ADVERTISEMENT In a strongly worded 105-page interim order, Sebi accused Jane Street and its associated entities of using complex high-frequency trading strategies to manipulate the Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty Indices. The regulator also said these tactics misled retail options traders and gave Jane Street an edge in India's booming derivatives interim order alleged that Jane Street earned unlawful profits of ₹4,843 crore ($570 million). Jane Street runs its operations in India through four group entities-two based locally and two located in Hong Kong and Singapore, respectively. The firm established its first Indian unit in December 2020, while the other two Asian entities participate in Indian markets as registered foreign investors. D-Street turns cautious ahead of US trade deal deadline

Indian benchmark indices snapped two consecutive weeks of gains Friday, with volatility ahead of the July 9 India-US trade deal deadline, profit booking, and regulatory action on Jane Street kept D-Street momentum subdued. NSE's Nifty rose 55.7 points or 0.2% to close at 25,461. BSE's Sensex rose 193.42 points or 0.23% to end at 83,432.89. Both indices have declined about 0.7% this week. "On Friday, investor sentiment was cautious amid regulatory developments and global uncertainty," said Vikram Kasat, head of advisory at PL Capital. " Sebi 's interim action against US-based quant fund Jane Street weighed on broader confidence, while concerns over a possible US tariff announcement ahead of the July 9 deadline kept risk appetite muted." The US President had announced a 90-day pause on the imposition of import tariffs, and India indicated hopes to strike a trade deal before the end of this deadline. Despite this, Kasat said, the India VIX stayed near nine-month lows signalling subdued volatility. The Nifty Volatility Index or VIX- the fear gauge of the market, fell 0.6% to 12.3 levels on Friday.
