Glasgow Italian artwork collection to go on tour in China
It is hoped the 'Prosperous Symphony – Italian Treasures from Glasgow Museums' exhibition will boost tourism and trade links with China.
Glasgow councillors backed the tour, which is set to start in Shenzhen in September before visiting 'five or six' other cities, at a meeting last week. Items will return to Glasgow in 2028 and could then be displayed in Kelvingrove museum.
Following the meeting, a spokesperson for Glasgow Life, the council's culture and leisure arm, which runs the city's museums, said: 'As the first standalone touring exhibition of Italian artwork from Glasgow's museums to museums in China, it represents an exciting opportunity to build on the city's international strategy.
'China is a key overseas market, and this prestigious exchange will strengthen business, academic and civic relationships. It will also position Glasgow in cities across China as a culturally rich, must-visit destination, encouraging inward tourism.
'We are currently finalising which works will travel as part of the tour and will provide an update in due course. Glasgow Life will receive £30,000 from each venue hosting Prosperous Symphony – Italian Treasures from Glasgow Museums.'
A council report stated that alongside 33 paintings, the collection includes examples of ceramics, glass, marble sculpture, textile, arms and armour.
An exhibition of the city's Italian art went on tour to the United States in 2013 and all but one of the paintings and objects have been in storage since.
Glasgow Life will be working with NOMAD Exhibitions on the tour, which has estimated around 100,000 visitors per venue.
The council report added: 'With a new international strategy, regular trade missions, links between the city's universities, businesses and China and the targeting of a direct air route into the city, the timing to use an exhibition as cultural exchange and the backdrop for other initiatives is now.'
It stated Glasgow Airport is targeting a direct China to Glasgow air route to complement two direct flights per week — four in summer — between Edinburgh and Beijing.
Ideas to promote the tour include using the University of Glasgow's networks, as it has 9,000 Chinese students as well as alumni who now work in China.
Connections through Glasgow's chamber of commerce, which aims to attract inward investment from businesses in Beijing and Shanghai, will also be explored.

I tried Clydebank's new Bangin' Pizza hotspot
Friday night, the beginning of many workers' weekend and what a way to kick start the two-day break than trying Clydebank's newest hot-spot for grub. Bangin' Pizza has just opened on the town's Kilbowie Road, and it was jumping. The third member of its franchise, the brand already has successful shops in Johnstone and Dumbarton, delighting customers with its unique mix of music and pizza. By the time I was being served my pizzas, there was a line of five or six out of the door. It was clear bankies knew the hype surrounding this new spot. I placed my order of two pizzas, one plain La Marinara and a recommendation of the Highlander (the most expensive on the menu). Topped off with a portion of the Bangin' Fries. My total was £28. The scran. (Image: Supplied) I was buzzing to get tucked in, but a half-hour wait is what comes with a busy Friday and a newly opened, in-demand commodity. An introductory menu is in place for the soft launch of the new venue, offering five pizza choices and four sides. I've been fortunate enough to have visited Naples, the home of the beloved doughy creation, only recently, so I was ready to set this Scottish-Italian twist against the homeland. First off the La Marinara Pizza is priced at a decent £9.50. A simple, but delicious tribute to the heart of Italian food. The thin base was the perfect homage to the country's pizza, with a hearty dough, packed with flavour and piping hot. The tomato-based sauce was sweet on the tongue, dusted with some oregano to give it an extra kick; it was everything an Italian would want from a pizza. Classic, original and punching with flavour. Along with the generous pricing, this thoroughly deserved a 10/10. (Image: Newsquest) It was denser than the first pizza, but it was for a reason. The toppings were plentiful, evenly spread and generously given. The black pudding was the cherry on the cake, absolutely beautiful. Although i favoured the first, my friend who grabbed a bit of this one was delighted. I'd give it a strong 9/10. At first, when I opened them, I was expecting a bit more from them to be named after the brand. Bangin' Fries. (Image: Newsquest) However, when I grabbed a bite, my opinion changed. They were perfectly seasoned, not too salty, just the right amount. A strong start for the sides, I rate this a 8/10. These pizzas were a true testament to some of the delish bites I sampled in Naples, they were delicious and hearty food that I will easily be finding myself going back for. Despite a newly opened shop and a packed queue of customers, there was no compromise of taste, presentation or service. It was clear the restaurant is looking for authentic, heartfelt food whilst bringing in their music background with plenty of tunes whilst you wait. In my opinion, it was in fact ,Bangin'.

Tourists book 'hotel' for Italian holiday but arrive to something totally different
Matt Hey was excited to spend a few days of his European holiday relaxing at a resort in Sorrento, but he was in for a big surprise when he arrived at the accommodation A tourist was left baffled after arriving at what he believed was a luxury resort in Sorrento, Italy, only to find that his party were the only guests there. Matt Hey, from Sydney, Australia, had been travelling across Europe for four weeks, living in cheap accommodation in cities like London, Rome and Pisa to make the most of the experience travellling with friends. However, the party then decided to splash out on their next accommodation. As they were heading towards the Italian coastal town Sorrento, they decided to book in to what they believed was a luxurious resort by the sea. However, they soon realised their mishap when they arrived at their holiday destination. Taking to TikTok, Matt was seen recounting the moment they realised their "hotel resort" ended up coming with a lot more than they'd expected. "I'm just baffled, I'm honestly baffled," Matt said at the start of the video as he looked out over the view of the nearby sea. "This is bizarre." "So we got here, we walk through the gates up there," Matt said pointing to the gates in question. "We walk down here because Google Maps just said it was at the end there. We walk all the way down here and I'm saying 'wow, isn't this nice and peaceful and quiet.'" He went onto say he started to think it was weird that they hadn't seen another person on the premises. As they get to the main building, he goes onto explain that he first thought it looked like someone's house before assuming it's the reception area where they could check in, or possibly one of the rooms. "Anyway, so then I'm like, let's go around looking this way and we'll have a look," he said before the video cut to them arriving at a different area. "And we get down here and this is what I see." There were also some tables and chairs to sit down at, but again not a single other person could be seen. He then turned the camera once again towards the house, which has a balcony with a big glass door on the first floor. "There's like a little wedding reception area sort of thing," he said before turning the camera to a different door of the house with white curtains hanging from it. They then walked closer to the end of the patio, which showed that the "hotel" was located right on a cliff which looked down onto the bright blue water, with a beach right below them. "Looks amazing, right? So I'm thinking, 'why haven't I seen anyone yet?'" he questioned, before revealing that a woman suddenly walked up to them asking if they needed help. Matt went onto say that he'd told the woman that they were in the wrong place, but said they were looking to check in to their room, to which she replied she'd call the concierge. They then continued to explore the area, finding another area that looked like a "wedding dance floor" according to Matt, who said he believed there must be smaller villas for them to stay in. The concierge then met them, and they proceeded to do the check in at one of the sitting areas by the dancefloor, before he handed them the key. He then took them to the house, which also looked like it'd been decorated for a wedding. "And to be clear, we thought we were getting a hotel," he said. "Don't get me know, I'm not complaining, we're going to have a beautiful time here. But we didn't need an entire wedding venue. I'm rattled, actually. Like, genuinely rattled." In the caption of the video, Matt revealed that they'd paid $600AUD (£292) per night to stay at Villa Antiche Mura Relais in Sorrento, which describes themselves as "villas for weddings" on their website. Taking to the comments, people were shocked when they realised just how much they'd gotten for their money. But some were also baffled as to how they'd managed to make this "mistake." "Is this Sorrento?? How is this 600 dollars?????" one baffled person asked. Another suggested: "Invite some locals round for a party not like you don't have set-up haha." "Send the details I've found my wedding venue," a third viewer said. Another person shared: "I got married in Tuscany because we got the wedding plus a full week's accommodations for 30 people for less than we would have paid for a single-day sit-down dinner wedding for 150 people at a major US city."
