Violet Benson always struggled to hear in her left ear, but it took her years to realizehow big the problem was — and even longer to do something about it. The Daddy Issues meme account creator, podcaster and author — her book comes out next year — kept her hearing loss secret from most people until her 30s. It was only this summer that Benson revealed to her millions of Instagram followers that she'd recently been fitted with a hearing aid.
Getting the device, and opening up to her audience, gave Benson back much more than her hearing. In this interview with Yahoo's Natalie Rahhal, she opens up about experiencing new sounds — and Celine Dion — and accepting her full self.
Growing up, everything on my left side was always off. As a child, I just assumed everything was better on the right side because I was right-handed.
I was born this way: Legally deaf in my left ear, with an enamel deficiency that made my bones weak, including my left leg, which was crooked from birth. I have to assume that it was all because I was born with vitamin D deficiency. I was born in Russia, where, if you're born in the winter, there's no sun. Plus, I was born under communism, when many babies were born malnourished.
Once we left Russia, my mother took me to a doctor for a consultation about having surgery to fix my leg. The doctor said to just put me in the sun for vitamin D therapy. And the sun worked! I now have two very straight, very normal, same-size legs, without any surgeries! I was even able to do gymnastics, jazz and ballet until I was 17. But my other health issues persisted.
As a child, I didn't give much thought to my hearing because my biggest struggle was with my teeth, which were bad due to an enamel deficiency. People made fun of me, and I was at the doctor or dentist every week; I've had more than 15 root canals. So, my hearing was just not at the top of my priorities list.
I first really became aware of my hearing loss after we won the green card lottery and moved to the U.S. when I was 14. I saw my sister talking on the phone. First, she held it on the right side of her head, then she switched the phone to her left side. I was shocked. I asked her how she could hear on her left side. She told me I sounded stupid and that she switched ears whenever she felt like it. That's when I realized: I can't do that.
Still, I tuned it out. I told myself, It's not that deep, I'll just deal with it. I think that's a very 'immigrant' mentality. My whole family was living crammed in an apartment, so my hearing didn't feel important compared to the other things we were dealing with. Plus, I'm Eastern European, so I was kind of taught that you hold the pain inside.
Instead, I just adapted. I learned to read lips without realizing it. Your brain is such a marvelous organ; mine just learned to adjust to hearing on one side. I would always tilt my head to the right side when people spoke to me. Sometimes people thought I was rude because I would stare at the ground, trying to concentrate on hearing them on my right side.
As an adult, I finally told many of my friends that I was deaf in my left ear, so they would just speak to me in my right. But otherwise, I continued to ignore my hearing loss and focus on building the identity that I wanted to have. In my 20s, I got 'celebrity'-style porcelain veneers (the only type that will work on my teeth because you could see the yellow through others) and, for the first time, I felt beautiful. I started my 'Daddy Issues' Instagram account. I had worked so hard to build my confidence and this perfect exterior because I'd rather mask my flaws and make sure no one else could see them.
The pandemic was the first time my hearing loss really became an issue. With people wearing masks or standing far away, I couldn't read their lips. I started to feel really embarrassed and uncomfortable, especially if someone was speaking to me with an accent. I wouldn't be able to make out what they were saying because I'm deaf and I couldn't read their lips. But I felt so guilty because I know what it's like to be foreign and have people struggle to understand you. It was exhausting, and I felt so much shame that I genuinely stopped leaving my house for a long time.
With the pandemic over and masks off, it got easier. But after a year or two — maybe because I'm aging — I started to struggle again, especially trying to hear people at events or on nights out. Trying to talk to people when there's any background noise becomes really exhausting, and I would get tired and irritable. People thought I just didn't care because I didn't want to have a heart-to-heart in the club. This year, I started to feel like I could hear less and less. I didn't understand why I was getting tired faster than usual when having conversations.
After struggling more and more, I finally decided to take a hearing test a few months ago. On my left side, I could only hear very high pitches, and it sounded like I was standing far away from an intercom and someone was trying to speak to me through it. I felt tears fill my eyes, and I started to get overwhelmed. The audiologist told me that my brain was experiencing so much shock. I had no idea how bad my hearing was on my left ear.
After the test, the audiologist told me that I have 90% of my hearing in my right ear and 30% in my left. That means I have severe hearing loss. She said that I would slowly lose more and more hearing, including on my right side, because your ears are like a muscle: If you don't use your hearing, it kind of dies off. She said that my migraines, fatigue and irritability were likely due to my right ear working overtime, trying to tune out background noise so I could listen.
The audiologist told me that if I don't start wearing a hearing aid, not only will I struggle to understand when other people speak, I'll start losing my ability to pronounce words. People who are deaf on both sides speak differently because they can't hear themselves. That was a big fear for me, because I speak for a living. The audiologist warned me that I needed to take my health more seriously.
There were two weeks between the exam and the day that I accepted the hearing aid. I cried about it every day and didn't tell anyone. As humans, we have so many annoying emotions. Part of me felt like I would lose my identity if I had to wear a hearing aid, and people could see it. I worried they would think of me as the deaf girl, instead of the person I've built my identity around: this confident person, the creator of Daddy Issues who gives advice. I felt like the hearing aid was going to take my identity without my permission. And I even felt shame around the fact that I was embarrassed about it. I'm supposed to be this person who tells others to be confident and love who they are. I'd rather be the villain in the story than someone that you pity, and there I was feeling shame about my self-pity. I'm even writing a book that's part memoir, part self-help about how not to be a victim!
Then one day, I woke up and was like, Hello, listen to the advice in your own book! I can't control what someone else thinks about me, and while I'm thinking they're looking at my hearing aid, in reality, maybe they think I'm ugly or my personality is annoying. We can make up as many stories as we want about what other people are thinking, but I can only control what I'm thinking. And no one can make me a victim unless I make myself the victim. It took me 20 years to accept my insecurity about my teeth, and I'm not doing that again.
So, yes, I'm deaf in my left ear. Now what?
I got the hearing aid and put it on. Imagine: For the first time in 36 years, there's suddenly sound on your left side. It was overwhelming, but I also felt like Superman. I walked out of the audiologist's and I could hear everything. I could hear the cars behind me on the street. I went into UPS, and a lady put tape on a box, and it felt like nails on a chalkboard. I was like, How is this not a superpower?
But then I got in my car and turned on music with the volume just halfway up. I've always loved concerts because it's the only time I can hear music the way everyone else hears it. The first thing I listened to was a Celine Dion song that she sings in French. It was so beautiful to be able to decipher the differences between her voice, the background sounds and the piano. I had tears in my eyes.
When I found out I had to wear a hearing aid or lose my hearing, I had thoughts like, What if I'm less lovable? There's this constant fear of being judged — or judging yourself because there are bigger problems in the world, so how dare I feel these emotions? But it's all in our heads. In reality, as an adult, I gave myself something I wasn't able to as a child: I told myself my feelings were important. You have to have those conversations and allow yourself to cry. It goes way beyond hearing loss: You have to be able to accept yourself.
I realized that if I kept my hearing aid to myself, it would be a shameful thing. But if I put a video out into the world, it would force me to just be OK with it. I was surprised to get teary while making the video, but once I posted it, it was just this sense of acceptance. We often think we're the only person who experiences those emotions and that shame, whether it's about hearing loss, or your appearance, or ADHD or depression. Your pain can become your identity when you don't know how to deal with it and think that it's the only thing that represents you. But it's not. Once I said it out loud — that I am deaf and need a hearing aid — I didn't feel like a prisoner to my own pain. It's out there, and now I'm free from it. If I hadn't accepted myself, then the first person I came across who didn't was going to break me. But now, you can't break me without my permission. I already cried about it!
When I walked outside with my hearing aid for the first time, no one even noticed! They didn't have pity in their eyes. It felt like such a big deal, but that's because I made it such a big deal.

As anyone who has ever gone through it will tell you, hitting your mid-30s brings on a life shift. Like it or not, you are no longer the ingenue; you're a bona fide adult with kids (maybe), a mortgage (possibly) and fine lines (almost certainly). Your 40s are closer than your 20s, hangovers are more brutal and the aches and pains you've always shaken off after a day or two now tend to … linger. A study recently published in the Annals of Medicine adds some scientific evidence to back up those feelings. According to the 30-year study, which assessed both physical and mental health, age 36 is when many of the choices we made as younger people begin showing up in our bodies and minds. People who smoke or drink heavily, eat poorly or put off exercise often begin seeing significant health repercussions by the time they hit 36. Essentially, age 36 is a turning point for the process of aging. This news made us think about what it really means to be 36 — both physically and emotionally — and how 36-year-olds think about themselves at this stage of life. (And, OK, what face cream are they using?) Here's what seven women told us. Around the ages of 33 to 35, I became aware of changes to my body and face. I started noticing new lines on my face. Then a couple of months ago, I woke up one morning, and my arms just felt different. You hear people talk about losing muscle mass as you approach 40, and I have not been consistent about getting movement in. I do take long walks, and I'm now trying to be more consistent with lifting weights. In terms of other self-care stuff, I dry brush my body, apply facial oil and do gua sha. Sunscreen is a must, and I'm seeking out clean brands and swapping products accordingly. I apply retinol to my face, neck and backs of my hands about one to two times a week. I also journal and am incorporating more meditation. I don't plan to get Botox, so I actively avoid smoking, drinking, tanning and any other vices that I hear contribute to aging. I'm grateful for the freedom my journey to 36 has brought. I'm self-employed, divorced and on the brink of a dream move abroad. I'm not a mother, but I'm a proud auntie. Sometimes, I feel old and like so much life has passed. Other times, I feel like my life is only just beginning. The age when I saw the most physical changes to my body was 34, right after I had my daughter. My body changed, and silver strands appeared in my hair. Now at 36, I have extra weight around my midsection, but I'm trying to give myself grace while also focusing on strength training. Professionally, I run my own podcast, and entrepreneur-and-toddler life is a workout all its own. As for other ways I take care of myself, for the last 20 years I've sworn by the Clinique 3-step skin care system: cleanser, clarifying lotion and Dramatically Different moisturizer, morning and night. I don't smoke or tan, and I only drink on special occasions, usually a single glass of wine or champagne when celebrating. Looking back at photos from my 20s shows me just how drastically my other priorities in life have shifted. Being 36 means motherhood first and work second. It means I'm building a life that fits my family, not squeezing my family into my life around my work. As a longtime wellness enthusiast and former beauty editor, my self-care and beauty routines were very involved. More recently, they've become more intentional and health-conscious. As a new mom, self-care feels like taking the time to get a thorough massage after a few intense workouts, strength training so I can feel stronger, getting a professional blowout and investing in biweekly mani-pedis. It also looks like eating nourishing meals coupled with supplements to make sure I'm giving my body what it needs. My beauty routine has shifted to double-cleansing my face, especially on days when I wear a face full of makeup. I also consistently exfoliate and rotate serums and eye creams for firming and brightness. I also always moisturize and use sunscreen. In terms of cosmetic treatments, I got a little under-eye filler a few years back to treat under-eye bags—but it may be time for a refill. Thirty-six is definitely the age when I've noticed the most change. I'm starting to see changes in my face — it's not as firm and tight — and I'm the heaviest I've ever been. My hair has also grown its longest but sheds more than ever before. These things don't necessarily bother me, but I've noticed them all the most at 36. For me, being well-fed and rested are the secrets to youthfulness. I tend to be obsessive about getting at least eight hours of sleep. Likewise, if I don't eat 'clean' I can absolutely feel the reverberations of that soon after. It's no longer worth it to me to feel bad in ways that I can control. That said, I still drink some alcohol. I wish I could give up my wine on the weekends for the sake of my health, but I'm not emotionally ready for that yet. My early 30s were the most dramatic shift in my physical appearance. It was like pressing a button, and my metabolism shut down. I now have to work very hard to stay fit, but on the flip side, if I work too hard, it's counterproductive to my body and produces a lot of stress. Thirty-six feels like a big change physically too because I had a baby (unexpected C-section) at 35-and- a-half, and just about everything is now different physically. Since then, my hair has grayed significantly, every bit of my torso has morphed and my energy levels are currently nonexistent. But as I step into my late 30s, I feel newly invigorated to grasp on to youthfulness. Not in a desperate or aesthetic way, but rather to find the energy to keep doing all the things I love. Thirty-six is a transformative year. For many of us, careers are more stable, we've got a kid or two — in my case, two little ones — and we're starting to think about what the next 36 years should look like. Social media makes aging feel like something to fight, not embrace. It pushes this idea that you have to do everything to avoid looking your age, and most of it is fake and insanely expensive. My self-care routine is pretty simple. I don't do fancy facials or regular nail appointments, and my go-to moisturizer is an $8 tube of Vanicream (holy grail status). I started Botox at 26 — just 15 units in my forehead and crow's feet, maybe once or twice a year if I'm lucky. I never skip washing my face at night, and I slather on a Korean skin care product before bed, especially on my neck. I'll also admit to the occasional spray tan. In my teens, though, I spent way too many hours in tanning beds, especially during visits to my grandma in Florida. If the sun wasn't out, she'd take us to the tanning salon so we'd come home glowing. Looking toward the future, I've thought about plastic surgery but not for another eight to 10 years. I believe small tweaks can help slow the aging process. A full facelift isn't for me, but a few minor procedures might be on the table as I get closer to 50. My mother and I were mistaken for sisters until I was about 25. Both my parents look far younger than their ages, and people have commented on that for years. I never thought much of that until I enjoyed receiving the same compliment. When I tell people I was born in 1988, they have genuine disbelief in their faces. I have made my mistakes, however. In 2017, when the social media influencer was at its peak of power, I was convinced to start getting Botox in my forehead and 11s, and Juvéderm filler in my lips. I stopped getting the injections about two years ago simply because I wanted to go a more nontoxic route. In my 20s I'd fall for every skin care trend and was weirdly proud of how many 'steps' my routine 'required.' A few years ago, a company reached out to me and paid me to review one of their skin care products. The product contained a topical steroid and caused me to break out in a horrific case of perioral dermatitis. I had to stop using literally everything … I couldn't even wear makeup for several months. After ruining my skin barrier, I started rebuilding my routine, which now consists of sensitive skin Dove bar soap (an oldie but a goodie) and the Amperna Soothing Duo. My confidence tanked when I had those breakouts, and I'd do anything not to feel so hopeless again. Years 33 to 36 have brought on the most changes physically for me. My body takes longer to recover from workouts and alcohol consumption (I now feel the effects of two drinks the next day), and I need more sleep in general. Since turning 36, I've become more conscious of how the choices I make will impact my future. I want to keep my mind sharp and my body physically active. My husband and I are considering starting a family in the next year, so I think a lot about what my body will need to carry a baby, my body/mental health postpartum and how to keep up with a toddler when I'm in my 40s. Right now, I work out three to four times per week, eat well and take a variety of daily supplements. I drink about three times per week and use a nicotine vape daily. The one vanity piece that bothers me is my gray hair. My dad was almost completely gray by 40, and I definitely got his genes. One day I will proudly rock it, but I'm not ready to yet.

Americans were moving more than ever pre-COVID — and then the world shut down. While lockdowns may be long over, we haven't yet gotten back to those pre-pandemic levels of activity. That's a problem, because too much sedentary time is linked to health risks such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. One way to avoid these problems? Move more, whenever possible — even if you have a job that keeps you stuck at a desk for most of the day. Drink your coffee while on a morning walk, or take a lap around the office (or your home!) in between meetings. You can also make socializing time more active: Instead of meeting a friend for dinner or drinks, consider a workout class or evening stroll. And don't overlook 'exercise snacks,' bursts of movement you do to break up time sitting down. Just 30 seconds of jumping jacks or air squats can get your heart pumping and blood flowing. In a column for the Washington Post, Dr. Trisha Pasricha shares that she has been 'prescribing' two kiwis a day for the patients at her gastroenterology clinic. These small, fuzzy fruits pack a big punch. Not only are they loaded with vitamin C, but just one kiwi contains 2 to 4 grams of fiber, something most Americans aren't getting enough of in their diets. And kiwis also contain actinidin, an enzyme that helps break down protein and therefore aids in digestion. So if you're feeling a little backed up (ahem), or just want a refreshing summer snack you can feel good about, kiwis are a great go-to. When the afternoon sleepies set in, it can be tempting to reach for something highly caffeinated — like an energy drink — to help you stay alert. 'Drinking these substances in excess sometimes speeds up our heart rate too much, or can cause some extra heartbeats, called ectopy,' Suri explains, resulting in palpitations. Another downside? Drinking caffeine later in the day can interrupt our sleep, which can lead to heart issues down the road. So what can you do about that post-lunch energy slump? Suri recommends taking a 15-minute walk — and getting some fresh air — to feel more refreshed. It's hot out there! You're probably sweating a lot this summer — but that doesn't mean you want everyone to know. Stylist Sophie Strauss has this top tip for the Guardian: Avoid wearing heather gray, which has black undertones that make it appear much darker when wet (and making those pit stains way more obvious). Navy and dark green tops are more forgiving, she adds, while busy patterns can offer a nice distraction. Making margaritas for a summer party? Beware so-called margarita burn. Our friends at Today say that the lime juice in margs contains furanocoumarin, which can react with sunlight and cause a type of skin inflammation known as phytophotodermatitis. This type of rash, which can show up hours after you touch lime juice, may leave behind red marks that fade into brown patches and can take up to eight weeks to fade. Still want to squeeze some limes for a fresh batch of margaritas? Make sure to rinse your hands immediately after juicing. Dermatologist Dr. David Kim tells Today that if you're already feeling the burn, use a steroid cream followed by brightening serums with kojic acid and arbutin, which can prevent brown patches from forming. According to Self, you might be sabotaging your workout gains with poor nutritional habits — like waiting too long to eat after you exercise. Unfortunately, doing so can delay muscle repair and increase soreness, leaving you feeling wiped out, dietitian Alex Larson explains. If you're not eating a meal after your workout, go for a snack that combines carbs and protein. A glass of chocolate milk and a turkey sandwich are solid options — or, make a fruit smoothie with a scoop of protein powder or some Greek yogurt. Interior designer Bri Macdonald tells Business Insider that one thing that cheapens the look of a home is low-quality fake plants — but it's not just aesthetics you should be concerned about. Fake plants also collect dust, which means you'll have to clean them regularly in order to maintain their look and avoid allergens. Use real plants, many of which help with air purification. A diet too high in sodium can lead to high blood pressure, which in turn can cause heart disease. And since cheese tends to be higher in salt, it's often on the chopping block for folks looking to eat healthier. If you're a cheese fan, though, you don't have to cut it out entirely. Instead, experts for EatingWell recommend avoiding higher sodium cheeses and opting instead for Swiss cheese, which is less salty than other varieties. For example, a one-ounce serving of Swiss cheese contains about 52 mg of sodium, while cheddar has about 185 mg. Plus, Swiss is rich in bioactive peptides, which may actually benefit blood pressure. Want to sneak in a daily workout that's actually safe? Your core is the one body part you can work out every day, no rest days needed, trainer Stephanie Mansour tells Today. Because your core muscles — think abs, lower back, hips and pelvis — are smaller, they recover faster than larger muscle groups like your quads or biceps. Plus, building a strong core improves posture, reduces back pain, helps with balance and makes everyday movements easier. Start with a five-minute routine of exercises like planks, crunches and mountain climbers. Since there are dozens of core exercises out there, beat boredom by switching things up when the routine gets stale. (Flutter kicks or Russian twists, anyone?) The summer months mean more time out in the sun, but if you're on certain medications, you need to be extra-cautious, USA Today reports. Certain meds — like some medications for anxiety and depression — cause excessive sweating, which means you could become dehydrated more quickly. Others, like many antibiotics, antihistamines and even oral birth control medication, cause sun sensitivity. If you're taking these medications, make sure you have water on hand (an electrolyte packet for extra-hot days can also be helpful) and are wearing sun-protective clothing, including sunglasses and a big hat. You should also make sure to regularly apply sunscreen.
