Alexis Badel tunes up for Champions Mile bid with breakthrough treble at Happy Valley

French jockey lands his first three-timer since October 2022 at city circuit ahead of Group One ride on Sunday
Alexis Badel struck top form ahead of his bid for Group One glory on Champions Day with his first treble in two and a half years at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.
Set to ride consistent galloper Happy Together in Sunday's Champions Mile, the Frenchman tuned up for the city's second biggest meeting of the year with wins on Winning Heart, Leather Master and Power Koepp.
'It's important, my form's good,' Badel said after moving to 25 wins for the campaign.
'I feel good. I've had decent support and a nice book of rides and it's nice to deliver.'

Frankie Lor Fu-chuen's Happy Together faces a tough test against the likes of star miler Voyage Bubble and nine-time Australian Group One winner Mr Brightside in a strong edition of the Champions Mile.
However, the six-year-old has been a model of consistency in Hong Kong with six wins and three top-five finishes in his three Group One starts.
'Happy Together is my faithful friend and I believe his form is good and I think it's interesting to see him over the mile,' Badel said.
'I think it makes it more simple. It's a tough race but he's so honest. He'll run a place.'
Badel bagged the opening two races at the Valley, with Tony Cruz's Winning Heart overcoming a wide run throughout to claim the Class Five Flamingo Flower Handicap (1,200m) before Manfred Man Ka-leung's Leather Master broke through for his first triumph at start 20 in the Class Five Freesia Handicap (1,800m).
Power Koepp continued his top form since a transfer to Mark Newnham, landing his second win from three starts for his new stable in the Class Three Kalanchoe Handicap (1,200m).
Perfectly placed by Badel in the box seat from gate two, the seven-year-old surged to the lead passing the 200m and held off a gutsy Lucky Eight to win by a short head.
Elsewhere on Wednesday night, the Valley's leading trainer Caspar Fownes and his apprentice Ellis Wong Chi-wang teamed up for a race-to-race double with Super Sixty and Sky Cap.
It was 24-year-old Wong's first brace since May last year.
'It's very nice. He's a good kid, so hopefully he'll kick on from this,' Fownes said.
'He gave them nice rides, they were deserving of their victories and hopefully he can get some more support now and more winners.'
Wong capitalised on gate one to spear Super Sixty along the inside for a fast-finishing win in the Class Four Geranium Handicap (1,000m) before making all on Sky Cap in the Class Four The Lusitano Challenge Cup (1,200m).

Starting a $29.9 outsider after finishing no better than seventh from his five starts, Capitalist three-year-old Sky Cap kicked clear in the straight and hung on late to beat Bienvenue by a neck.
'It was a surprise, but his last run was a lot better. He was only beaten three and a half lengths at Sha Tin and came here with an inside gate [two],' Fownes said.
'He was going to be competitive but winning or not, you don't know. We're just happy to get the result.'
Cruz shared training honours with Fownes after also notching a brace with Winning Heart and Fallon, who continued his consistent form with a strong win under Ben Thompson in the Class Three Roselle Handicap (1,800m).

Whirl powers through Goodwood thunderstorm to ease away with the Nassau Stakes

Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien teamed up for more Group One glory. Photo: Reuters Aidan O'Brien's rising star made light work of difficult conditions on the third day of the elite festival Whirl made quick work of torrential conditions at Glorious Goodwood to win the Group One Nassau Stakes (2,000m) in impressive fashion on Wednesday. Biblical rain, thanks to a heavy thunderstorm, saw racegoers cowering indoors before the race, and the Nassau itself was delayed for 10 minutes with lightning in the area. None of that – including a flag start due to safety concerns – fazed Aidan O'Brien's $1.7 favourite, who went straight to the lead under Ryan Moore and was never seriously challenged. The race was billed as a clash between Whirl and the Andrew Balding-trained See The Fire, but that battle never materialised after the latter blew the flag start and could only finish third. 'She's understated – that's just her nature. She's been coming along in the shadows and nothing seems to bother her,' O'Brien told Racing Post. 'She's hardy and keeps turning up. She's pretty unusual and has an unbelievable mind. She didn't even know she'd had a race.' Clive Cox's debut winner ran a brilliant race to finish third in the Group Two Coventry Stakes (1,400m) at Royal Ascot and took another step forward to record a facile all-the-way two-length success up the stand's rail. 'I was worried about soft ground because he's got such a beautiful action on a nice surface. He's very quick and did that really well,' Cox told Racing TV. 'I think he's very gifted and he's a proper six-furlong horse so usual plans from here, Middle Park will be the end goal.'

Liverpool end Asia tour with win over Japan's Yokohama

Liverpool end Asia tour with win over Japan's Yokohama Wirtz found the net for Liverpool in the second half against Yokohama F Marinos. Photo: Reuters Florian Wirtz scored his first Liverpool goal as the Premier League champions beat Yokohama F Marinos 3-1 in a pre-season friendly in Japan. French forward Hugo Ekitike made his debut for Liverpool, one week after joining from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported US$92 million. Wirtz equalised after Yokohama opened the scoring early in the second half, the German slamming home a right-foot shot from inside the box in front of over 65,000 fans. "I am really happy that I could score my first goal. I hope there are more to come," said Wirtz, who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in a blockbuster deal. Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha also scored for Liverpool, who announced the sale of Colombian forward Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he was happy to see his team come from behind to win but was not pleased with their missed chances. "It could be with a tough training camp and it could be with the heat circumstances," said the Dutchman. "But that's something that we definitely have to improve." Goalkeeper Alisson Becker missed the match after travelling home to Brazil "for private reasons", Liverpool said. Shortly before kickoff, an emotional tribute was given to Diogo Jota, who passed away this month in a car crash. Liverpool dominated throughout but Yokohama opened the scoring when Asahi Uenaka pounced in the 55th minute to beat Giorgi Mamardashvili. Wirtz levelled when he latched onto a Mohamed Salah pass. Nyoni volleyed home a Jeremie Frimpong cross to put Liverpool in front, before Ngumoha dribbled from the halfway line and fired in a shot from the edge of the box. (AFP)

Illinois has big shoes to fill in the Goodwood Cup as iconic festival kicks off

Aidan O'Brien is hoping Illinois can fill the void left by star stayer Kyprios when he lines up in Tuesday's Group One Goodwood Cup (3,209m) as the iconic five-day racing festival gets under way. Last year's winner Kyprios, an eight-time Group One winner who won the Goodwood Cup on two occasions, was retired in May after aggravating an old injury, - leaving the staying throne up for grabs. Illinois was made favourite for the Group One Gold Cup (4,000m) at Royal Ascot following his retirement but could only finish second behind runaway winner Trawlerman. There is no Trawlerman in his way on this occasion and, dropped back in distance, he will get his chance for redemption and a maiden top-level success under Ryan Moore. TRAWLERMAN IS THE 2025 GOLD CUP HERO! #ROYALASCOT — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) June 19, 2025 The thing about Illinois is that he stays very well, but he's got a bit of class to go with it. We're happy with him; he's been doing everything right at home,' said O'Brien. 'He has a good mind, he's relaxed, he's big and he's hardy. Physically, he's done well.' He will face some stern opposition, however, with the main danger coming from the John and Thady Gosden-trained French Master. Owned by powerhouse Wathnan Racing, the four-year-old gelding posted a career-best effort when running away with the Copper Horse Stakes (2,800m) at Royal Ascot last month. He is on a sharp upwards trajectory and Wathnan Racing's manager Richard Brown is hoping to learn more about him. IT'S WATHNAN AGAIN! FRENCH MASTER WINS THE COPPER HORSE STAKES! #RoyalAscot — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) June 17, 2025 'I saw French Master at John and Thady Gosden's yard recently and he seems to have come out of his Ascot race in great condition,' said Brown. 'You had to be impressed with that performance. He's stepping up from a handicap to a Group 1 race but we're going to pitch him in the Goodwood Cup and see where we are.' Other dangers include Scandinavia, a wide-margin Group Three winner for O'Brien earlier this month, and the reliable Gosden-trained Sweet William, who has only finished outside the top three in one of his 17 career starts. 'It was a tough race and in the end it was a little too far for him, but he ran a brave race. He's in very good form. Robert Havlin rides him every day and he's very pleased with him,' said John Gosden of Sweet William. All eight races from the first day of Goodwood will be simulcast, with a pair of Group Two races headlining a stacked undercard. The Group Two Vintage Stakes (1,400m) features a plethora of exciting younger horses, with the O'Brien-trained Dorset set to go off favourite. He improved from a debut second to run riot in a maiden at the Curragh last month and the second has boosted the form subsequently. Humidity made it two wins from two with a dominant performance in the Listed Chesham Stakes (1,400m) at Royal Ascot and heads up the dangers alongside Zavateri, who also made it two from two when causing a boilover in the Group Two July Stakes at Newmarket this month. The Group Two HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (1,400m) is a wide-open affair, with last year's winner Audience and the 2021 and 2023 hero Kinross towards the top of the market. Golden Eagle (1,400m) winner Lake Forest, top level-placed Jonquil, and Group Three Jersey Stakes (1,400m) winner Noble Champion are other big chances.
