A historic goodbye: PTC bids farewell after more than 160 years
While the size of the crowd was typical of a race day at the storied track, the atmosphere was anything but ordinary.
At the entrance, patrons were greeted by a large banner which read, "Thank you, loyal patrons" — a poignant farewell to generations of supporters.
Many came dressed to the nines, adding a touch of glamour to their final visit to the more than 160-year-old turf club.
Smartphones were held aloft throughout the day as visitors captured photos and videos, eager to preserve their last memories of a venue steeped in history.
Established in 1864, the Penang Turf Club officially concluded its operations following a unanimous vote to dissolve what was long considered one of the state's most cherished institutions.
To commemorate the occasion, seven special races were held.
Among the highlights were the RM250,000 PTC Farewell Trophy (1,300m), the RM150,000 PTC Memorial Trophy (1,100m), and the RM100,000 Jockey Club of Turkey Trophy (1,400m).
Each race was met with loud cheers and applause, as loyal fans rooted for their favourites one final time.
With the closure of the PTC, only two turf clubs remain in Malaysia: the Perak Turf Club, established in 1886, and the Selangor Turf Club, founded in 1896.
Today, the PTC bid farewell not just to its patrons, but to a proud legacy that has galloped through generations.

Corporate figure to be new Terengganu FC CEO this season
TERENGGANU FC (TFC) will be led by a corporate figure as chief executive officer (CEO) this season. Terengganu Football Association (PBSNT) chairman Hishamuddin Abdul Karim said the state FA has compiled a shortlist of several suitable candidates to lead the club, in line with the full privatisation plan for the club to move towards professional management. He said the final selection is underway and a closed interview would be conducted next week to select the most qualified and credible candidate to lead the club to greater heights. 'This time we will bring in a corporate figure to manage TFC. We need to fully embrace privatisation for the development of the club. 'We will announce the person as soon as possible, within this month after interviews and approval from the board of directors,' he said when met at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Terengganu Football Sdn Bhd (TFCSB) and the Terengganu Incorporated Group (Trg Inc) here today. At the ceremony, Trg Inc, represented by Chief Executive Officer Datuk Burhanuddin Hilmi Mohamed, handed over a sponsorship worth RM1.65 million to support TFC in the upcoming 2025/26 Malaysia League season. Burhanuddin said the sponsorship in the form of money and services represents a RM150,000 increase from the previous season. 'We believe that the strength of a football team does not solely depend on performance on the field, but also requires corporate backing, professional management and comprehensive community involvement. 'This collaboration is expected to increase brand engagement of government-related company Trg Inc across all TFC platforms,' he said.

FAM chief responds to accusations of secrecy
KUALA LUMPUR: The foreign-born naturalised players have come to Kuala Lumpur, played for Malaysia and have gone back to where they came from. Yet, the debate over their ancestry, their lineage, their connection to Malaysia refuses to go away. It's an unusual situation, in fact, something which Malaysian football has never experienced. Some fans can't pronounce the names of their national players, some have problems remembering who is who and from where. And some fans have accused the FA of Malaysia (FAM) of keeping the lineage of the heritage players under wraps. In response, FAM president Datuk Joehari Ayub said the lineage and ancestry of the new heritage players have been verified. FAM had earlier announced that five new heritage players — Facundo Garces, Imanol Machuca, Jon Irazabal, Joao Figueiredo and Rodrigo Holgado — were cleared by Fifa. And they played key roles in the 4-0 win over Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier in Bukit Jalil last month. However, FAM has not revealed the lineage of these players, or how are they related to Malaysia, leaving fans in the dark. Joehari said the players' backgrounds were vetted and cleared by Fifa, and FAM has no reason to conceal any information. "We are not taking this lightly. Fifa has checked everything, and at FAM, we are merely following the procedures and directives set by them. "If we need to reveal it, we have no problem doing so." Joehari said FAM has always prioritised transparency and will not take shortcuts when it comes to recruiting foreign-born players, particularly in terms of eligibility and compliance with international regulations. "If there were any issues, Fifa would not have granted approval. In this case, everything was cleared and done through the correct process," he said.
