Bihar: Monks light candles near India's largest reclining statue of Lord Buddha
Dozens of monks participated in the candlelight prayer held late in the evening to mark Lord Buddha's 2069th birth anniversary. The ceremony was led by Bhante Arya Pal, the Founder Secretary of the Buddha International Welfare Mission.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhante Aryapal said, 'Today is Vaishakh Purnima. It is a very special day because Lord Buddha was born on this day. At the age of 25, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and later, at the age of 80, he passed away in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. All these important events happened on Vaishakh Purnima.'
He added, 'That is why this day holds great importance for all followers of Lord Buddha around the world; for people who know and respect Buddha truly honour him from the heart.'
Buddha Purnima (also known as Vesak), which was celebrated on May 12 this year, marks Gautama Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (death).
Earlier on May 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended wishes on the occasion of Buddha Purnima and said that Lord Buddha's life will always inspire the world community towards 'compassion and peace.'
'Best wishes to all countrymen on Buddha Purnima. Lord Buddha's messages, based on the principles of truth, equality and harmony, have been a guide for humanity. His life dedicated to sacrifice and penance will always inspire the world community towards compassion and peace,' PM Modi posted on X.
President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her heartfelt greetings to the people of India and to followers of Lord Buddha worldwide.
'On the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima, I extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all fellow citizens and the followers of Lord Buddha worldwide. The immortal message of non-violence, love and kindness given by Bhagwan Buddha, the embodiment of compassion, is the basic mantra for the welfare of mankind. His ideals strengthen our faith in eternal values of equality, harmony and social justice. His teachings inspire us to live a life based on morality,' President Murmu said. (ANI)

New Delhi: Industrialist Anil Ambani on Tuesday appeared before the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in connection with an alleged fund diversion case, two people aware of the development said. The agency, which probes money laundering and violations of foreign exchange laws, is investigating an alleged diversion of funds from Reliance Infrastructure to a related party without adequate disclosures. The company had last week said this exposure was of ₹ 6,500 crore and that it had disclosed this matter in February itself. Reliance Infrastructure maintains it has diligently pursued recovery of its dues in this matter, and through mandatory mediation proceedings conducted by a retired Supreme Court Judge and the mediation award filed before the Bombay High Court, the company had arrived at a settlement to recover its exposure of ₹ 6,500 crore. Anil Ambani has not been on the board of Reliance Infrastructure since March 2022. Queries emailed to Anil Ambani's Reliance Group and to the finance ministry on Tuesday, seeking their comments on the latest development remained unanswered at the time of publishing this report. News agency ANI reported that Ambani was asked to appear before investigators in connection with a probe on suspected financial irregularities and possible violations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The probe agency is looking into the role of various entities and individuals linked to the case, ANI reported. In May 2020, the ministry of corporate affairs had referred the issue of Price Waterhouse & Co Chartered Accountants LLP's (PW) resignation as auditors of some of the group companies without giving an audit report for FY19, to the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA). NFRA had looked into the audits done by the auditors appointed subsequently in the case of Reliance Home Finance Ltd, Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd and Reliance Capital Ltd, and penalised the auditors for alleged professional misconduct, the authority's orders showed. Reliance Infrastructure provides engineering and construction services for power, roads, metro rail and other infrastructure sectors. It is also engaged in implementation, operation and maintenance of several projects in the defence sector and infrastructure areas through its special purpose vehicles, the company said on its website. It had executed the Mumbai Metro line one project and is also a utility company having presence across the value chain of energy businesses, the company said. The ED had earlier issued a lookout circular against Ambani and had sought his presence for recording his statement under the PMLA, Hindustan Times had reported on 1 August.

Bhagwat's Lecture Series: RSS Opens Doors To Oppn, Muslims, Christians, Tech Leaders, Foreign Envoys

A senior RSS functionary confirmed that the organisation is reaching out to leaders from opposition parties. The list of foreign embassies has been finalised, excluding Pakistan and Bangladesh. Bangladesh has been excluded for now, as it currently lacks an elected government. The lecture series, titled Vyakhyanmala, will span three days and be headlined by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. He will deliver speeches on the RSS's journey over 100 years and future horizons. On the final day, Bhagwat will also take live questions from the audience, which will include esteemed personalities from various sections of society, foreign diplomats, and politicians. The series will commence in Delhi, followed by Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Mumbai, with sessions extending into NCR and several north Indian states to ensure broader regional participation. 'Covering 17 thematic categories and 138 sub-categories, the invitation list will focus on individuals, achievers, and their social-professional-cultural contributions to the nation," said Sunil Ambekar, Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh (national spokesperson) of the RSS. 'The lecture series will address ideas central to India's new generation, youth and entrepreneurship, women's empowerment and leadership, national security, cultural identity, decolonisation of institutions and practices, along with social harmony," he added. Significantly, this platform is not just for allies but an open intellectual space. Members of the Muslim community and other minorities, including Christians and Buddhists, will be invited as equal contributors to the dialogue. The RSS has even decided to include critics and ideological opponents from across the political spectrum. The presence of diplomats from foreign embassies highlights growing global interest in India's ideological and cultural currents. Including influencers, tech innovators, and young changemakers reflects the Sangh's focus on shaping and listening to 'Young India". This lecture series is happening after seven years, as the last one took place in 2018 in Delhi. Himachal High Court seeks safety report on 140-year-old underground water tank
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], August 5 (ANI): Amid rising environmental concerns, the Himachal Pradesh High Court on Friday issued notices and sought a status report from the State Government and the Municipal Corporation of Shimla on the structural safety of the 140-year-old underground water tank situated beneath the historic court was acting on a Public Interest Litigation (CW PIL No. 66 of 2025) filed by former Deputy Mayor and environmentalist Tikender Singh Panwar.A division bench comprising Chief Justice G.S. Sandhawalia and Justice Ranjan Sharma observed that the commercial use of the Ridge, including vending, exhibitions, and allowing heavy vehicles, posed a serious threat to the century-old tank, which was built using lime and mortar during the British era, without cement reinforcement.'It is submitted that while permitting commercial activity in the form of vending and exhibition on the Ridge, a large number of heavy vehicles are being allowed access and there is a threat of cracks to the tank, which is not being kept in mind," the court observed, quoting the petition, filed by Tikender Singh Panwar, highlighted that the water tank holding more than 10 lakh gallons lies within a vulnerable and sinking zone of Shimla and is already showing signs of structural to ANI, Tikender Singh Panwar, the petitioner, said that he is seeking the existing law to be implemented to preserve and protect the heritage.'This is one of the most vulnerable hotspots in Shimla. During my tenure as Deputy Mayor, a vulnerability risk assessment had identified this area. Cracks have already developed in the tank. Despite that, heavy load-bearing activities continue. We are not asking for new laws, we are only demanding implementation of existing heritage laws. Shimla's core, stretching from Advanced Studies to Chhota Shimla, is a heritage zone. Both built and natural heritage must be preserved." He said.'It is shocking that large rallies, fire brigades, and heavy vehicles are allowed on the Ridge. The British had left 6-inch layers on the tank. Today we have added over four feet of elevation, increasing the weight burden. This structure cannot be reconstructed; once gone, it is lost forever," Panwar added also questioned the misuse of heritage spaces.'Statues of national leaders have undergarments drying on them. Vending zones are being created illegally, sometimes allegedly in exchange for money. When we raised concerns, we didn't rush to court–we submitted representations to the Chief Secretary and other authorities multiple times. Only when nothing happened, we filed this petition," he response, Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan acknowledged the court directive and said the Municipal Corporation is committed to acting responsibly.'The High Court has given us four weeks to file our response. If there is any structural risk to the Ridge tank, we will act on it immediately," Chauhan told further elaborated on the steps being taken.'We are stabilising the area below the Ridge, especially the Tibetan Market road and the sinking zone near the Chinar tree. We are also building a park there to ensure safety. The area is being monitored. Regarding load-bearing, we have never exceeded a foot of layering on the Ridge in the last 15 years. Even the old 1-foot tyring of Dalhousie Bridge was removed to reduce weight." He Mayor also clarified the roles of various departments in heritage and the activities that are allowed.'Any activity or rally on the Ridge is permitted by the Home Department, not by the Municipal Corporation. We follow the guidelines. Last month, following an incident, the district administration also issued directions against placing any heavy structures on the Ridge. We fully support the court's orders and will comply in letter and spirit," he petition underscored the urgent need to reconcile urban development with heritage preservation in Shimla a city known for its colonial-era architecture and fragile court has directed the State authorities and the Municipal Corporation to submit their replies and status report within four weeks, with the next hearing scheduled for September 3, concern deepens, heritage activists and civic authorities now await a judicially guided resolution to safeguard Shimla's most iconic open space Ridge Maidan and the historic water tank beneath it.
