Air fryers recalled over fire risk concerns

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has issued an urgent warning for specific Tower air fryer models sold in Ireland. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using nearly 60,000 affected units due to a manufacturing defect that poses a significant risk of overheating and fire. Although no incidents have been reported in Ireland, there have been reports of these products catching fire in the UK. The recalled air fryers were manufactured between 2020 and 2024 and sold at various major retailers across the Republic of Ireland. Owners of affected models should unplug their appliance and contact Tower Housewares via their website or email for further instructions.

Musk's xAI seeks up to $200 billion valuation in next funding round, FT reports

July 11 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's xAI is preparing to raise more money from investors in a deal that could value the artificial-intelligence company between $170 billion and $200 billion, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing people close to the discussions. Saudi Arabia's PIF sovereign wealth fund is expected to play a large role in the deal, according to the FT report. PIF holds an indirect interest in xAI through its stake in Kingdom Holdings Company, which has an $800 million investment in the firm. The talks were preliminary and the details could change, the report said. "XAI is not seeking funding right now. We have plenty of capital," Musk posted, opens new tab on X after the FT report. PIF did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Morgan Stanley said in late June that xAI had completed a $5 billion debt raise alongside a separate $5 billion strategic equity investment, as the startup looks to expand its AI infrastructure through data centers amid intense competition. The AI startup acquired X, Musk's social media business formerly known as Twitter, in March, valuing xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion. Musk launched xAI in July 2023 as an alternative to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which said in March that it would raise up to $40 billion at a $300 billion valuation. XAI expects to generate more than $13 billion in annual earnings by 2029, according to numbers revealed by its banker, Morgan Stanley, Bloomberg News reported in June. The company expects $1 billion in gross revenue by the end of this year and plans to spend $18 billion on investments in data centers going forward.

Cerberus and Dean Metropoulos also made a bid for WK Kellogg, sources say

July 11 - Private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, which owns a stake in grocer Albertsons (ACI.N), opens new tab, and billionaire investor Dean Metropoulos teamed up in an unsuccessful bid for cereal maker WK Kellogg (KLG.N), opens new tab, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The consortium, which was being advised by investment banks UBS and Macquarie Capital, ultimately lost out to private, family-owned Ferrero Group, which on Thursday announced an agreement to acquire WK Kellogg for around $3.1 billion. However, the offer from Cerberus and Metropoulos was considered a serious alternative to Ferrero and has caused industry insiders to wonder about a possible future target for the pair, two of the sources said. Both Cerberus and Metropoulos have histories of investing in the food industry. WK Kellogg, Cerberus, UBS and Macquarie declined to comment. Metropoulos & Co did not immediately respond to a comment request. Dealmaking in the food space has picked up steam in recent months as owners focus on core names and offload underperforming brands. There has been a relatively steady supply of buyers for these divestments, aiming to turn around their fortunes. Cerberus is the top shareholder in grocery chain Albertsons, but it has not made a big bet on a consumer or retail company in years. Its offer for WK Kellogg shows the firm still has a desire to invest in the sector, the sources said. Meanwhile, the investment firm of Greek-American billionaire Metropoulos - Metropoulos & Co - acquired Nestlé Waters North America in partnership with One Rock Capital Partners in 2021. The firm is known for making investments in numerous consumer names, including Hostess Brands, Utz and Pinnacle Foods. Kellogg split into two in 2023, creating WK Kellogg to house cereal brands and Kellanova (K.N), opens new tab to house its other brands. M&M's owner Mars agreed to buy Kellanova for $36 billion last year.
