
E-scooter injury toll revealed in study just ‘tip of the iceberg' in Australia, doctors warn
Every three days, a child injured on an e-scooter would come through the emergency department doors at the Sunshine Coast university hospital, according to Dr Matthew Clanfield.
Between 2023 and 2024, 176 children were treated at the Queensland hospital.
Some got off lucky with a scuffed knee. Others suffered life-threatening brain injuries requiring neurosurgery and psychological care.
Clanfield's analysis of these injuries in under-16s treated at the hospital have been published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health. It is the first data in Australia to capture paediatric e-scooter injuries, and it's 'only the tip of the iceberg', Clanfield said.
Analysing paediatric ED triage notes, the ages of those injured ranged between five and 15 years old. One in 10 had life-threatening or potentially life-threatening injuries, and more than a third suffered at least one bone fracture.
Based on self-reported data from the patients, at the time of the accidents, 42% of children were not wearing a helmet; 36% were exceeding the legal speed limit of 25 kilometres an hour for e-scooters on Queensland roads; and in 13% of cases two people were riding one scooter.

'We had one child who got up to 70 kilometres an hour on an e-scooter and T-boned a car,' Clanfield said.
In May, the Crisafulli LNP government announced a parliamentary inquiry into e-bike and e-scooter safety, but Clanfield's study has called for 'immediate governmental action' raising the age limit to protect children and match other states.
In Queensland, children aged 12 to 15 are allowed to ride e-scooters if they are supervised by an adult riding alongside them on another device. Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory are the only jurisdictions that allow 12-year-olds to legally ride e-scooters.
In New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania e-scooter users must be aged at least 16. The age limit is 18 in the Northern Territory and South Australia, according to Assoc Prof Terry Slevin, the CEO of the Public Health Association of Australia.
E-scooter accidents are a 'growing problem', Slevin said. But a lack of national data to identify the size of the problem and no nationally consistent rules or enforcement of those laws make it a difficult problem to solve, he said.
A University of Melbourne researcher, Assoc Prof Milad Haghani, searched local news stories published between January 2020 and April 2025 to gather data on e-scooter related deaths. He identified 30 fatalities. Of those, 11 were aged under 18.
Slevin said a serious problem was that children did not have a sophisticated understanding of the road rules or road safety.
However, he said e-scooters were also a 'general community safety issue' because other road, footpath and cycle path users could be struck by e-scooters.
Dr Sarah Whitelaw, the Australian Medical Association's federal emergency medicine representative, said the study reflected what was happening in other states and territories.
Whitelaw said it was 'heartbreaking' when injured patients and their families said 'they had no idea that they could get so badly injured on an e-scooter'.
'Emergency care and trauma specialists right around Australia are increasingly concerned about the number of injuries that we're seeing with regards to children under 18,' she said.
Children were 'massively over-represented' in cases of e-scooter injuries and deaths, despite e-scooters being mostly ridden by adults.
Part of the problem, Whitelaw said, was that 'these devices are unfortunately marketed to kids … [and] it's not clear to parents that, in fact, in many states and territories, it's illegal to ride them outside your home on public property unless you're over 16'.
She said rather than banning e-scooters, governments should improve safety laws.

When life gives you cumquats or kumquats make a marmalade and mezcal cocktail
In our Melbourne garden, the only fruit tree that produces with any regularity is a cumquat. Bitter little things, cumquats – spelled kumquats outside Australia – are not quite as versatile as most other citrus. So, I say 'when life gives you cumquats, make marmalade!' – then use it in a punchy and tangy cocktail. The Lady Marmalade is a late-night specialty in our household. You can make a non-alcoholic version by shaking up the marmalade with a tangy fruit juice. Grapefruit with a splash of lime works well; the marmalade adds texture and complexity that elevates the juice to mocktail status. The cocktail is made with mezcal and apricot brandy but you can swap out the mezcal for aged tequila, brandy or whisky. You could also use a brighter marmalade based on lime, lemon or grapefruit, and switch the lime juice for lemon to pair with a lighter spirit. To make the spiced marmalade, you'll need a saucepan, juicer, microplane, measuring jug and scale. For the cocktail, you'll need a rocks glass, shaker and a jigger. 500g cumquats 1 cup (250ml) water, or enough to cover the cumquats250g granulated white sugar, or to taste (I like to keep my marmalade quite tart)Pinch salt 1 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp smoked paprika ½ lemon, zest and juice Quarter or slice the cumquats (depending on size). You can cover the cumquats with the water and leave them to soak overnight if you have time. This softens the fruit, which helps it to cook faster and keeps the flavour fresher, but it's not imperative. If you do this, cook the cumquats in the same water you soaked them in. Put the cumquats, water and sugar in a saucepan and stir over a low heat for 10-15 minutes until the fruit is tender and the sugar has dissolved. Add the salt, spices, lemon zest and juice while still over a low heat, then increase the heat and bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Reduce the heat to medium and continue boiling for about 20 minutes, or until the marmalade has thickened. To check if it has reached setting point, place a small plate in the freezer until cold, then drop a dollop of marmalade on the cold plate. Tilt the plate and, if the marmalade doesn't run, you're good to go. If it runs, continue boiling for a few minutes, then use the same cold plate method to check again. Or you can just eyeball it, if you're a cowboy like me. Fish out any pips you can see. If marmalade is properly jarred and sealed in a sterile container, it can last in the pantry for up to six months. Prisoner dies at correctional centre, sparking protests from fellow inmates who allege the man suffered for days before his death
An inmate at a Sydney correctional centre has died, prompting protests from other prisoners who say he was denied proper medical care in the days before his death. A 41-year-old Aboriginal male inmate at Parklea Correctional Centre, in Sydney' north-west, died on Friday night after being taken to hospital for treatment. A group of inmates conducted protests inside the correctional centre in response to the man's death at 9am the following day. The protesters reportedly barricaded a wing of the prison while outbound calls and visits to Parklea were temporarily suspended. Family members of a man inside the pod told the Saturday Telegraph the inmates protested because they believed the deceased was given a lack of medical attention in the week leading up to his death. The fellow inmate was reportedly friends with the deceased. One family member told the Telegraph that the 41-year-old's cellmates alleged the prison had not done enough to care for him. 'They are serving these sentences and doing their time but it should be done humanely… he had been begging for help,' the family member said. The Saturday Telegraph understands the deceased inmate was seen by medical professionals on a daily basis in the lead-up to his death. Police said a report would be prepared for the coroner but initial inquiries indicated the death of the inmate was 'not suspicious'. 'About 11.20am yesterday (Friday June 27), emergency services were called to a correctional centre in Parklea following reports of an inmate requiring medical assistance,' a NSW Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia. 'A 41-year-old man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Blacktown Hospital, and then transferred to Westmead Hospital for further treatment.' Parklea, a medium and maximum security facility, is privately owned by Management and Training Corp (MTC) but is expected to return to public ownership next year. An MTC spokesperson confirmed the inmate's death sparked 'peaceful protests' in an accommodation unit on Saturday which ended within hours. 'After a period of negotiation, the majority of inmates were voluntarily secured in their cells,' the spokesperson said. 'A small number of inmate representatives then spoke with centre management. 'At about 12.30pm, inmates were released from their cells, and normal routine recommenced. 'There were no injuries to staff or inmates during the incident, and nothing was damaged.' The spokesperson said MTC was working with Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police who investigate all deaths in custody 'regardless of the circumstances'. 'As the matter will be subject to a coronial inquest, it would be inappropriate to comment further,' they said.

Shocking photo emerges of former Greens candidate who faces losing her sight after being injured during a violent arrest at an anti-Israel protest
The former Greens candidate who is at risk of losing vision in her right eye after suffering facial injuries at an anti-Israel rally has undergone surgery. Hannah Thomas, who challenged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the seat of Grayndler at the last election, is in a stable condition in hospital after Saturday's procedure. On Friday, in south-west Sydney, she and about 50 others were protesting outside Lakemba business, SEC Plating, which the Greens have accused of supplying materials used by the Israeli military. The NSW Greens claimed the business was involved in the supply chain to make Israeli fighter jets. Police issued a move-on direction to the group at about 5.35am on Friday to disrupt the alleged unauthorised protest. Ms Thomas allegedly refused to comply with the order and sustained facial injuries when she was arrested before being taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment. A new photo of Ms Thomas on Saturday showed the severity of her injuries, with her entire right eye closed, swollen and bloody, while she sat in the back of an ambulance. The right side of her face was also covered in blood while her eye was black. NSW Greens MP Sue Higginson wrote to NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb and Police Minister Yasmin Catley to complain about the actions of the officers at the rally. 'I am writing to you to express my deep concern that no critical incident has been declared following the (alleged) assault by NSW Police against a community member at a public assembly in Belmore,' Ms Higginson wrote. 'As you know, a critical incident is an incident involving a NSW police officer that results in the death or serious injury of a person. 'Having witnessed the grievous injuries (allegedly) caused by the police to Hannah Thomas, spoken to on ground witnesses who witnessed what occurred and with the knowledge that Hannah has experienced serious injuries and hospitalisation, I am calling for a critical incident to be declared urgently.' Four others were arrested and charged during the protest, including a 24-year-old man who was allegedly found in possession of a stolen police body-worn camera. Police said the camera was stolen by an unknown protester during a scuffle and was tracked to the 24-year-old's location. It is not clear exactly what caused Ms Thomas' injuries but doctors are reportedly fearing she may not regain sight in her right eye. The Greens meanwhile have said they have spoken with lawyers to potentially represent Ms Thomas and the other protesters who were arrested during the incident. Ms Thomas has attended anti-Israel protests in the past, having called on Australia to impose sanctions on Israel, whose government she accused of genocide. She was among dozens of demonstrators who descended on Albanese's electorate office to demand action after Greta Thunberg's 'Freedom Flotilla' was seized by Israeli defence forces earlier this month. A spokesperson for NSW Police told Daily Mail Australia Ms Thomas had not been charged following the incident. 'She sustained facial injuries while being arrested for allegedly failing to comply with a police direction and the arrest was discontinued and (she) was taken to Bankstown hospital for treatment,' they said.
