'Wrong moves': Silat instructor claims trial to sexual assault of male students

KOTA BARU: A silat instructor pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to four charges of sexually assaulting three male students aged 15 and 17.
Faizul Yusoff, 54, was charged with two counts of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy in a hotel room at Kampung Semut Api Badang, Jalan Pantai Cahaya Bulan (PCB), at 9pm on Feb 13 and again at 3am on Feb 14, 2025.
He also faces a charge of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old boy at a homestay in Kampung Talang Kadok at 1am on Nov 13, 2023.
Additionally, he is accused of committing a similar offence involving another 17-year-old victim at a homestay in Kubang Golok, Bachok, at 3am on Jan 28 this year.
Faizul was charged under Sections 14(a) and 14(b) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by Nur Alyaa Mohd Zain from the Kelantan Legal Aid Foundation.
Earlier, Kamarul Hasyime objected to bail on grounds of the seriousness of the charges.
However, Nur Alyaa requested for minimal bail, citing that her client has no fixed income as he works solely as a silat instructor and is supporting five children.
Judge Zulkifli Abdullah granted bail at RM10,000 for each charge with one surety, and ordered the accused not to interfere with the victims. He was also instructed to report to the nearest police station once a month.
The court set July 27 for mention.

Teacher claims trial to sexual assault of 11-year-old pupil

KOTA BARU: A teacher claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today to four counts of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old male pupil in March and May last year. Syahril Faiza Zakaria, 51, was charged with committing two of the offences in a car at 2 pm in March 2024, while the remaining two were allegedly committed in a toilet at a resort in Pantai Cahaya Bulan here in May the same year. The charges were framed under Section 14(b) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, punishable under the same section and read together with Section 16 of the same Act, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping for each count upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad did not propose bail, citing public interest, the welfare of the victim, and the position of trust held by the accused. However, lawyer Mohd Saifullah Che Mat, representing the accused, appealed for bail to be granted, saying that his client was not a flight risk, had been suffering from a heart condition since May 2024 and was battling severe depression. He also said that his client, formerly posted at a primary school in Tumpat, had since been transferred to the district education office. Judge Zulkifli Abllah set bail at RM30,000 for all charges and imposed additional conditions prohibiting the accused from harassing the victim and requiring him to report to the nearest police station every two months. The case has been set for mention on Sept 10.
