Trump's Golden Dome: will the numbers add up to deter China in the Indo-Pacific?

China's expanding
military footprint in the Indo-Pacific is now a focus of America's defence strategy, with a renewed emphasis on space-based capabilities since
Donald Trump returned to the White House.
Central to this is Trump's ambitious bid to revamp the US Space Force and create a 'next generation' missile defence system – the so-called
Golden Dome
Analysts say that if it gets built, the multibillion-dollar shield could bolster the US' capacity to protect itself from long-range missiles while also deterring China's military in the Indo-Pacific region, including in the event of a conflict near the Taiwan Strait.
But questions remain over the feasibility and cost of the project, which would rely on a network of satellites and space-based sensors to intercept missiles.
'Signal to China'
The project was announced days after Trump was inaugurated in January, when he issued an executive order calling for an 'Iron Dome for America' – borrowing the name of Israel's vaunted missile defence system.

Hong Kong's complex social problems demand transparent and collective effort
Feel strongly about these letters, or any other aspects of the news? Share your views by emailing us your Letter to the Editor at letters@ or filling in this Google form . Submissions should not exceed 400 words, and must include your full name and address, plus a phone number for verification Hong Kong celebrated the 28th anniversary of its return to Chinese rule on Tuesday. The government has made progress in some areas: Support for innovation and technology, local businesses and community engagement are positive steps. Promoting halal tourism not only attracts more Muslim travellers but also underscores the city's commitment to diversity and inclusion. The government has allocated grants to address environmental issues and support youth development. While these efforts are commendable, agencies, including NGOs, responsible for managing these funds must operate transparently. Proper oversight is crucial to ensure resources are used effectively. The government's support for small and medium-sized enterprises through various schemes is appreciated, but there have been cases of misuse of the 100 per cent government-guaranteed loan scheme. Strengthening monitoring and enforcement is vital. Similarly, the process of approving and regulating charitable organisations must be more rigorous. Income inequality and poverty remain urgent concerns. The high cost of living, limited affordable housing and unequal access to opportunities have widened the wealth gap. Targeted social welfare programmes, increased support for low-income families and expanded affordable housing are essential.

US freezes key Ukraine weapons shipments as Russia intensifies barrages
The Trump administration is halting the transfer of artillery rounds and air defences to Ukraine, depriving the country of much-needed weapons as it endures stepped-up missile and drone attacks from Russia. Advertisement The White House confirmed a Politico report on the stoppage, which said the move came after a review of US munitions stockpiles and amid concerns they had fallen too low. Among the weapons that were being paused are 155mm artillery shells, Stinger shoulder-fired missiles, Patriots and Hellfire missiles, PBS Newshour's Nick Schifrin reported. 'This decision was made to put America's interests first following a DOD review of our nation's military support and assistance to other countries across the globe,' White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said in an emailed statement confirming the report. 'The strength of the United States Armed Forces remains unquestioned – just ask Iran.' A Ukrainian serviceman aims a Stinger anti-aircraft missile.
