Why Lucas Paqueta must wait to learn if he can sue the FA - after being cleared of spot-fixing following two-year investigation
The Brazilian was cleared on Thursday of deliberately picking up four yellow cards to influence betting markets, almost two years after Mail Sport broke the news that the West Ham midfielder was under investigation.
An independent commission found Paqueta guilty on two charges of failing to answer questions and provide information to the FA's investigation — he denied both — for which he is likely to be fined.
Paqueta must now wait for the written judgment from the trial to be published, which Mail Sport understands could take two to three weeks, before deciding whether to launch an appeal.
'They are charges we take seriously — we do need to go through the process with them with the FA and the commission,' Alastair Campbell, head of Paqueta's legal team at London firm Level, told Mail Sport.
'We need to pay that due respect. We are obviously of the view that Lucas did co-operate with the investigation so we have to look at the reasons when they are available to advise him on that.'
Mail Sport revealed on Friday that Paqueta would consider taking legal action against the FA for loss of earnings once the written reasons were published.
The 27-year-old was on the verge of an £85million move to Manchester City when news of the investigation caused the deal to collapse.
'In terms of whether there might be any action against the FA, it's certainly something we'll look at when we get the reasons and advise Lucas on his options,' added Campbell.
West Ham are unlikely to take legal action against the FA, with club insiders suggesting it would not be a good look for football to sue the game's custodians.
The FA could launch their own appeal against Paqueta's acquittal over the spot-fixing charges when the judgment is published.
They face the prospect of picking up the fee for Paqueta's legal bills, understood to be around £1.5m.

Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton is close to securing a move to French side Lyon worth up to £15million. The England U21 international has been looking to move for more regular first team game time and has attracted enquiries from a number of clubs including West Ham, Sporting Braga, Ajax and Strasbourg. Liverpool have been holding out for £15m for the 22-year old homegrown academy graduate and Lyon have now provisionally agreed terms with a deal expected to go through. Morton spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Championship side Hull City. The 22-year-old returned to Merseyside last season but could only manage six appearances in all competitions as Arne Slot led the club to Premier League glory in his maiden campaign in charge. Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez remains an option for Saudi club Al Hilal. Liverpool have been holding out for £70m for the Uruguay international and have already rejected an approach from Al Nassr in February and again more recently from Napoli. Newcastle have Nunez on their long list of options but they have other targets higher up as priorities and Liverpool are yet to indicate if they will make a new bid for Alexander Isak. Meanwhile former Manchester United coach Simon Wiles has taken over as Liverpool U18 coach.

However, I think it could be a challenging season for Dundee, given the self-enforced changes and the loss of key players. Poor League Cup group-stage campaigns don't always mean much, but Falkirk and Livingston look good, so I will say Dundee. Very much guess work at this stage with this one package: LivingstonDavid Martindale is determined to try and lose the long ball, physicality tag. Whilst they may not be top six, I think they will be comfortable this season, finishing best of the rest. Stephen Craigan, former Motherwell defender 1st: Celtic The reigning champions have the best players and the deepest squad, as well as Brendan Rodgers as manager.2nd: RangersStill a lot of questions around the new signings and their ability to win a title in a two-horse race. Time will tell if they're good enough.3rd: Heart of Midlothian Not having group stage European football as a distraction is a huge bonus for the Edinburgh side. The players underperformed last season and, with the additions over the summer, they have a better balance to the DundeeI'm judging this as we stand and not at the end of the transfer window remember. They have lost a lot of their reliable players who had good Scottish Premiership experience and haven't yet managed to replace them and I'm not sure they can. A bit into the package: LivingstonI'm not sure they'll be a surprise, but David Martindale has recruited well. He got his business done early and his squad has a lot of players with a point to prove and I think they'll prove it. A downside for them, though, is that teams won't dread going to Almondvale (or whatever it's called now) because of the new artificial pitch. I think they will stay well clear of trouble but won't have enough for top six.
