But boss Crawford felt his team lacked a spark in attack on a day when hot conditions went against them in Zagreb.
Crawford said: 'The game is the game and we really didn't create very much after the first 20 minutes.
'That is the talking point among the staff and players. It was an extremely hot day and we knew what was in front of us in a Pot 1 team in

'I thought we created one or two chances in the first half and we could have been a goal or two to the good.
'But they took the
sting
out of the game after that. We tired quite quickly.
'Croatia moved the ball quite well and caused us a couple of problems without creating any clear-cut chances.
'We got so far up the pitch in the second half and we just needed that cutting edge to create something which we didn't.

'They took a shot from distance. It took a deflection and it went in. We didn't have an answer to that. The lads gave everything in trying circumstances.

'We were missing that magic moment or something to unlock the door and give us a goal. But it was a great challenge. We knew it was going to be tough and we were happy after the first 20 minutes when we were the better team.

Richard Dunne: Why Ireland have 'genuine chance' of going to World Cup
Republic of Ireland legend Richard Dunne has weighed in on the nation's World Cup qualification hopes, giving a positive outlook on the future of Irish football. While speaking with Irish online casino affiliate Dunne said: 'I was chatting to some friends yesterday and I was saying that I feel like this is the first tournament we're going into in a long time where we have a genuine chance of qualifying. 'I think we've got a big pool of players with a lot of strength and depth. We've got a system at the moment that works for us, where we're not going to be that exciting, we're not going to be playing free flowing football but we're going to be difficult to beat. 'This is something that we've lacked over previous campaigns and I'm hopeful that we're going to be in with a chance of getting a play-off place.' The former Manchester City defender added that the current outlook of the Irish side is a 'huge improvement' of what the side looked like over the past few years. Ireland have not qualified for a major tournament since the European Championships in 2016 and haven't made it to a World Cup since 2002. One of the gems of the current Irish squad is, of course, Evan Ferguson. Pic: Sam Barnes/Sportsfile A couple of injuries combined with getting stuck behind the likes of Joao Pedro and Danny Welbeck in the pecking order meant Ferguson was out of favour and didn't have the chance to regain his previous form. However, after completing a loan move to Roma this summer, the Meath native already looks like a sharper version of himself and has already bagged a few pre-season goals for the Italian side. Dunne believes that the best is yet to come for Ferguson and he will ultimately be Ireland's shining star for the upcoming campaign. He continued: 'I think you just have to look at what he did in the first couple of seasons of his career. 'He was doing really well in the Premier League and he looked the main man. People were talking about him being a 60, 70, 80 million pound player going to real big clubs. 'It's difficult when you're a young player and you break through and to get those opportunities, certainly as a centre-forward, so I think the last 18 months of his Premier League career probably isn't what you judge him on. 'You judge him on what he was before and that potential, so I think there's a real benefit in him stepping out of that Premier League spotlight and going forward and playing for another huge club. 'I think he'll start to find his feet and start to find out what type of player he is as well and we'll see the best of him over the next couple of seasons and beyond. When his retirement comes, he will be passing the international armband down to a younger member of the squad and Dunne believes it's the new Brentford captain who is the right fit to take on the leadership role. He said: 'It's difficult looking in from the outside but you'd normally go for one of the centre-backs or centre-midfielders and I think the fact that Nathan Collins has been given the permanent captaincy at Brentford means he fits the leading role to do it. 'He's been a standout player at times for Ireland and it's difficult because he's still a young centre-back, he's probably now coming into the prime of his career so it's probably the ideal time for him to become a captain, to become that leader and take on the extra responsibilities, because I can only see him over the next five years improving and becoming a better player. 'Hopefully, he's the one that could be the leader and step up for the next tournament.'

Bundee Aki's baby born in car just before test kick-off
Connacht rugby star Bundee Aki has become a father again after his wife Kayla gave birth to their fifth child in a car on her way to the hospital before the first Test of the series. The rugby international has been based in Australia in recent weeks as he lined out for the British & Irish Lions while his wife and their children were in their native of New Zealand. Speaking following the end of the test series against Australia, Bundee revealed his child had arrived with Kayla giving birth in the car on the way to the hospital. He said: 'The missus calls me and she's like, 'Water hasn't broke but I'm going to the hospital, I'm feeling contractions.' Dublin delivered 'over and beyond' says joint manager Paul Casey
It's not often that it all comes together on All-Ireland final day but it did for Dublin. "Over and beyond" was joint Dublin manager Paul Casey's summary of how just about every single Dublin player delivered. Defensively, Dublin conceded just four points from play. At the other end, they had enough scores racked up to lead by 13 points after 23 minutes. And all in what was the very first final contested under the new joint management of former Dublin footballers Casey and Derek Murray. "We knew when we met them this morning that they were ready for it," said Casey. "They had a pep in their step and they came into Croke Park bouncing. But it's nothing like the way they're going to leave here tonight! "It's a day when you're hoping that all your big names and stars will turn up and give a performance and I think that they went over and beyond in terms of that. It was fantastic." Truth be told, Dublin were there for the taking at times in this year's Championship. Certainly they lived on their wits, requiring a late, late Kate Sullivan score to draw with Waterford in Dungarvan. Hannah Tyrrell bailed them out with her free from the edge of the men's 40m arc in the semi-final against Galway, forcing extra-time that evening. And back on Leinster final day, Dublin had to reel off eight late points in a row to secure a four-point win, and the 12-in-a-row, at Meath's expense. So this was by a long way their best display of the year. "I think it was, yeah, absolutely," said Casey. "We saw it in patches before this. When we played Meath in Parnell Park back in the league, we were really, really good in that one. "And I think the last game, the All-Ireland semi-final, brought us on a lot. We really had to dig deep that day. We probably didn't play the football we wanted to but we were just superb out there today. "At times, their composure on the ball, the scores they got, their conversion rate must have been up around 80 percent. It was excellent. "But I thought defensively, and when I talk about defensively I mean from number 15 back to Abby in goals, they were superb. The full-back line, Jess Tobin, Leah Caffrey, Niamh Crowley, all brilliant. Niamh Donlon we actually thought we had lost last weekend, she had a bit of a nick in her groin. So to go out and give that performance was superb. "But it was all over the pitch. I think everybody played close to their best. To do that on this day of all days is very, very satisfying." Casey had special praise for Player of the Match Orlagh Nolan. It was her first start of the year after an ACL injury last year. "When we were up in Clonshaugh and Craobh Chiarain, in the dark and the muck, Orlagh was in the gym and working so hard to come back. She always did it with a smile on her face. "Her composure on the ball out there at crucial times, she was superb. We saw that when she came on in the semi-final against Galway. She's a fantastic footballer, so hopefully she can put all those injury problems behind her."
