What blew the pipeline? Not people, say police
SHAH ALAM: The April 1 gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights was not caused by sabotage or negligence, Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed today. A joint investigation by police and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) ruled out foul play after interviewing 212 individuals — including victims, Petronas reps, council officials, contractors, and witnesses. 'Our focus included nearby construction work and even the possibility of bombs or fireworks, but no criminal or negligent act was found,' Hussein said. Key findings include: - The pipeline and shoplot structures met Subang Jaya City Council and Petronas standards, including a 40-metre buffer zone; - Sewer excavation did not impact the pipe, which was buried 5.6m deep and 3.5m away; *There was no construction activity or sign of sabotage at the time of the explosion. Sewer works had ended on March 30; and - No abnormal gas readings were recorded prior to the blast—levels only dropped suddenly when the explosion occurred. Police explored sabotage and negligence under Sections 285 and 286 of the Penal Code but found no basis to proceed. Dosh petroleum safety division director Husdin Che Amat said technical analysis pointed to long-term ground pressure, unstable soil and material fatigue at a welded joint as the likely cause. Tests showed stress lines and a 15.9cm displacement at the joint, with metallurgical analysis confirming prolonged external strain. Poor drainage and groundwater buildup worsened the damage. The Fire and Rescue Department concluded that friction during the rupture likely ignited the gas. The blast sparked a massive fire visible for kilometres, destroying 81 homes, damaging 138 more, and affecting another 57 without fire damage. A total of 218 homes, including in Kampung Tengah, Puchong, were unaffected.

Putra Heights inferno: Ground beneath pipe gave way, says report
SHAH ALAM: An investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Department has revealed that ground instability led to the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights. The Petroleum Safety Department director, Husdin Che Amat, explained that the lower part of the pipeline was not adequately supported by the soft and moist ground. "This caused a physical failure at the pipe segment at the location of the blast, resulting in gas leakage which ignited and exploded," he said. Husdin added that the weak soil caused the pipe to move repeatedly, known as cyclic loading, generating stress lines and fatigue striations on the pipe surface. Metallographic analysis indicated that tensile overload was the primary cause of the failure, developing slowly until it resulted in ductile failure, releasing gas and triggering a fire. "In conclusion, the pipe failure was due to the ground beneath it not being strong enough to support its weight and pressure, causing instability, leakage, and eventually an explosion," Husdin said. However, investigations found that the gas pipe met specified technical standards. The mishap was not due to surface activities but because the ground beneath did not provide adequate support. Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed there were no acts of sabotage or carelessness involved in the Putra Heights Petronas pipeline blast. Comm Hussein said police investigated the incident under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire and Sections 285 and 286 for negligence with fire or combustible matter. Investigations also focused on work carried out by contractors in the area. Meanwhile, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced that a special committee will be established to implement measures to prevent similar tragedies. The explosion caused a large-scale fire, destroying homes, public infrastructure, and vehicles, and injuring around 150 people. The incident, which occurred just after 8am, caused flames to shoot over 30 metres high with heat reaching up to 1,000 degrees Celsius. It took almost eight hours to extinguish the fire, leaving a 9.8m-deep crater at the site. More than 500 residents were evacuated to relief centres, and some of those whose houses were completely destroyed have yet to return home as repairs are expected to take at least two years. Eighty-one houses suffered structural damage exceeding 40%, another 81 were partially damaged, and 57 were affected but not burned. More to come

Five detainees plead guilty to escaping Pasir Mas court lockup
KOTA BHARU: Five detainees who escaped from the Pasir Mas Sessions Court lockup last week pleaded guilty today to charges of fleeing lawful custody. The accused, Mohd Safiuddin Hanif Mohd, 38, Muhamad Norshamzee Mohd Noresan Shargawi, 32, Mohamad Akmal Mohd Zahari, 31, Mohd Haris Zakaria, 37, and Muhammad Alif Izham Hussim, 23, entered their pleas before Magistrate Rais Imran Hamid. The first charge stated that the five escaped from the Pasir Mas Sessions Court lockup at 10.20 am on June 22, an offence under Section 24 of the Penal Code. They were also charged with breaking into a house in Kampung Kubang Bongor, Pasir Mas, at 10.30 am the same day to steal a mobile phone, violating Section 457 of the Penal Code. Additionally, Mohd Safiuddin Hanif faced a separate charge under Section 332 for causing harm to a police officer during the escape. Deputy public prosecutor Syazalia Che Suhaimi opposed bail, citing ongoing drug cases and prior escape records. Defence lawyer Nur Amira Mat requested minimal bail, citing the accused's low-income jobs and family responsibilities. The court denied bail and set August 13 for case re-mention.
