Bernardo Silva insists Club World Cup loss just as painful as Champions League exit
The Premier League outfit crashed out of the competition in the early hours of Tuesday morning as they were beaten 4-3 in extra time by Saudi outfit Al-Hilal after a pulsating last-16 clash in Orlando.
City had established themselves as one of the favourites to triumph in the United States after winning all three of their group games in convincing fashion.
A run to the final would have prolonged their campaign until July 13, however, just five weeks before the next Premier League season begins.
After much debate about the impact of the Club World Cup on player welfare, there is a feeling in some quarters that City – after an underwhelming 2024-25 season – need the rest, but Silva does not see it that way.
The City captain said: 'No-one wanted to lose. We are very used to not having holidays, unfortunately, because the schedule is crazy and when we are in a competition we take it very seriously.
'We had a lot of ambition for this Club World Cup and we wanted to win it.'
Asked if the defeat hurt as much as Champions League elimination, Silva said: 'Yes, a little bit. Yes.'
City had taken early control with a ninth-minute goal from Silva at the Camping World Stadium, but they were to rue missing a succession of chances to increase the lead before the break.
Al-Hilal turned the game around through Marcos Leonardo and Malcom and reclaimed the advantage again with a Kalidou Koulibaly header after Erling Haaland forced extra time.
Phil Foden made it 3-3, but City could not regain the initiative and Leonardo settled an eventful contest – and secured a statement victory for Saudi football – with 112 minutes on the clock.
Silva said: 'There was always a feeling of danger coming from them when they recovered the ball in transition and their counters. We allowed them to run way too many times.
'But apart from that we had chances. We scored three goals and we could have scored five or six.
'They punished us. They have a good team with a lot of individual quality and congratulations to them.'
Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves impressed in the Al-Hilal midfield and fellow Portuguese Joao Cancelo was a threat against his old City team-mates.
Silva, also a Portugal international, said: 'I have friends there, I know most of their players and I know the quality they have.
'We were expecting another difficult game like Juventus and when you don't control transitions then good players, like Al-Hilal have, punish you. That's what happened.'
City begin the new Premier League season at Wolves on August 16.
Silva said: 'We will try to have as much rest as possible but also come back to prepare for the season properly.'

Sunderland have broken their transfer record for the second time since they were promoted to the Premier League with the signing of Habib Diarra from Strasbourg for a fee that could rise to £30million. Real Madrid beat Juventus 1-0 in the Club World Cup on Tuesday night in Miami, with Los Blancos booking a place in the quarter-finals of the competition. The match started slowly at the Hard Rock Stadium with both sides trading blows in the first half, but it sprung into life when Gonzalo Garcia headed in from Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross. Madrid dominated from there as Juventus slowly faded, with the Italians simply unable to put together any spell of sustained attacking pressure as Madrid closed the game out well. And it was a composed display from Xabi Alonso's side, who have now booked a quarter-final tie against either Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey. Real Madrid Thibaut Courtois, 6 Had little to do but was fine when called upon. He'll face tougher tests in the upcoming rounds. Antonio Rudiger, 6 Was solid overall and did enough to put off Kolo Muani with that early chance. Aurelien Tchouameni, 7 Marshalled the Madrid defence well and was solid throughout. Dean Huijsen, 7 Defended well when needed as was solid in possession too. Had little to do in truth. Trent Alexander-Arnold, 7 Provided his usual crossing threat but was occasionally caught too high up the pitch, though his assist for the opener was a typically superb cross. Jude Bellingham, 6 Was quiet in the first half but ended up producing one of the best chances of the opening period, though he couldn't finish it. Controlled midfield throughout. Fede Valverde, 7 Provided his usual goal threat from both distance and within the box, and tested the 'keeper on occasion, though probably should've scored. Managed to control midfield throughout. Arda Guler, 6 The young Turkish playmaker showed plenty of invention and some great passing and touches, but was unable to make a mark on the match. Fran Garcia, 6 Constantly looked to support Vini Jr and the Madrid attack, though wasn't too effective. Defended well when called upon. Vinicius Jr, 5 The Brazilian was industrious throughout but was often guilty of a sloppy pass and final ball, and wasn't able to create or finish any chances. Gonzalo Garcia, 7 Was quiet early on but finished the opening goal brilliantly and was a willing runner throughout before being replaced by Mbappe. Substitutes Kylian Mbappe, 6 – Was central to the Madrid attacking effort after coming on, and was a real threat. Luka Modric, 6 – showed flashes of his brilliance even in a tiny 10-minute cameo. Dani Ceballos, N/A – Came on in the 90th minute. Juventus Michele Di Gregorio, 7 Made two good saves in the first half from Bellingham and Valverde, and several more in the second half. Andrea Cambiaso, Offered a wide threat and helped keep the width for his side, though couldn't find that final bit of quality in attacking areas.
