Congress slams Govt over US advisory, calls it ‘another diplomatic failure'
At a press conference, Chairperson of the Congress digital and social media platforms Supriya Shrinate said: 'It is yet another diplomatic failure of the Modi government that the same country under the same leader whom Modi had gone out of way to appease by organising shows like 'Howdy Modi', 'Namaste Trump' and 'Ab ki Bar Trump Sarkar' was repeatedly heaping and hurling insults on India.'
'… an advisory is being issued against us while Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir is being invited to enjoy a meal with US President Trump, who has, in turn, hyphenated India and Pakistan,' Shrinate said.

‘No press, no speculations': Congress douses CM buzz in Karnataka; DK Shivakumar warns aides of disciplinary action
BENGALURU: Amid rumblings within Karnataka Congress , the party's central leadership Tuesday spiked speculation about a change in leadership and deputy CM DK Shivakumar categorically stated that there's no discussion on leadership. "No one is in a hurry, 2028 is important to us," Shivakumar, also president of Karnataka unit, said. All India Congress Committee general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, in Bengaluru on a firefighting mission, said, "There is no question of leadership change. If you (MLAs) want to settle scores, then raise it with the head of the family. In a party, it is the PCC president; in govt, it is CM. What we deliberate within the party should remain in the party," he added. Hours later, Shivakumar said disciplinary action would be taken against those making public statements suggesting a shift in power. "I'll issue a notice to Iqbal Hussain (Ramanagara MLA and an aide of Shivakumar). I don't want anyone to say I'll become CM. Today or tomorrow, I'll issue a notice to him. I also don't want Balakrishna to speak in my favour," he said. The leadership tussle had been set aside after the May 2023 election results. Surjewala hinted at internal party changes, though. "We'll definitely look at changing district Congress committee office-bearers if they are not cooperating with govt in taking guarantee and welfare schemes to the people." Later in the day, senior Congress MLA Raju Kage, who recently threatened to resign over being sidelined, met Surjewala and flagged administrative lapses in the state govt and fund allocation. "I've informed Surjewala about the issues. He has assured me a solution will be worked out," Kage told reporters after the meeting. Kage, who represents Kagwad, had earlier accused the govt of sabotage and corruption, warning that he would quit within 48 hours. Only man in fray, Bindal re-elected as Himachal BJP chief for 3rd term
Dr Rajiv Bindal was on Tuesday elected unopposed as the Himachal Pradesh BJP chief for a third term Tuesday. In the elections held Monday, Bindal was the only party leader to file nomination papers for the post. Formally declaring the results, Union minister Jitendra Singh took a swipe at the Congress. 'In their party, leadership decisions are made in kitchens and over dining tables. In contrast, the BJP follows democratic principles where even an ordinary worker can rise to the top,' Jitendra Singh said. Bindal's reappointment as state unit chief for a third term 'reflects the confidence of the organization in his leadership and ability to strengthen the party at the grassroots,' he added. Hamirpur MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur said Bindal's appointment would energize the party. He claimed that if elections were held today, Congress wouldn't win even eight seats in state. He also slammed the Congress government for administrative collapse and internal conflict. Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur too criticised the Congress for failing to appoint office-bearers for nine months and for stalling development in the state. BJP state in-charge Srikant Sharma said the party now has 18 lakh members in Himachal and is committed to making every booth strong under the 'Mera Booth Sabse Mazboot' campaign. Bindal, on assuming the office, called on the party workers to work dedicatedly to oust the 'corrupt and untruthful government'. 'I will work 24×7 with the motto of nation first as the next two years are very challenging,' he said urging workers to pledge unity and rise above personal interests. His mission, Bindal said, is to ensure that 'lotus' blooms in Himachal Pradesh again. He said that due to their commitment to the welfare of people former BJP chief ministers Shanta Kumar, Prem Kumar Dhumal and Jai Ram Thakur are remembered as 'Paniwala, Sadakwala and Sewawala' chief ministers. Bindal said the party had led in 61 out of 68 Assembly segments in the recent Lok Sabha polls. He also highlighted the party's organisational achievements, including enrolling 47,000 active members, increasing the number of mandals from 74 to 171, and constituting committees in 7,775 of the 8,009 polling booths in the state. Bindal remained an MLA from 2002 to 2022, serving five terms. He was thrice elected from Solan and twice from Nahan. He served as the health minister in the Prem Kumar Dhumal-led government from 2007 to 2012. He was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 13th Vidhan Sabha In January 2018, and held the post till January 2020. He also had a brief stint as the state BJP chief before being reappointed in April 2023. Meanwhile, former minister Govind Thakur and party general secretaries Bihari Lal Sharma, Trilok Kapoor, Pawan Kajal, Rashmi Dhar Sood, Payal Vaidya, Rajiv Saizal and Sanjeev Katwal were elected as national council members. Jai Ram Thakur; Anurag Thakur; Lok Sabha members Suresh Kashyap, Kangana Ranaut and Rajiv Bharadwaj; and Rajya Sabha members Indu Goswami, Sikender Kumar and Harsh Mahajan were elected as ex-officio members of the national council.

Tax cuts, deportations and more… What's in Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill passed by US Senate?
Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill has cleared a major hurdle after the US Senate narrowly voted in favour of it on July 1. The mega bill combines huge tax cuts and painful social programme cuts, which will affect millions of Americans. Here's a closer look at who benefits and who loses out as a result of the legislation read more After hours of stalemate, Republicans in the US Senate have narrowly passed Donald Trump's mega-bill on tax and spending on Tuesday. File image/AFP After a record 24-hour 'vote-a-rama', the Republican-led US Senate approved Donald Trump's sweeping tax and spending package, officially titled the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote on Tuesday (July 1). The voting saw three Republicans — Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Rand Paul of Kentucky — join the Democrats to vote against the bill. Following the passage of the legislation in the Senate, the US president, who was on a visit to a migrant detention facility in Florida dubbed as 'Alligator Alcatraz', celebrated the news . 'It's a great bill,' he said. 'There is something for everyone.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The sprawling text — it is estimated to be 887 pages long — consisting of tax breaks, spending cuts and other Republican priorities now heads to the House of Representatives, where it faces unified Democratic opposition and multiple Republicans balking at the budget-busting costs, as well as slashed health care and food aid programs for poor Americans. But what's in the bill? How does it affect the common American? Let's take a closer look. What's Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill? The One Big Beautiful Bill is Trump's signature second-term domestic legislative package. The White House describes it as a 'generational opportunity to deliver the long-term changes Americans voted for.' It aims to: >> Expand the scope of Trump's 2017 tax cuts to the wealthy while introducing new tax breaks. >> Cut federal spending and increase defence spending. >> Raise the debt ceiling by up to $5 trillion. >> Fund mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. However, not everyone views it the same way. Polls show the bill is among the most unpopular ever considered. US Senate Majority Leader John Thune speaks to reporters off the Senate floor after the Senate passes President Donald Trump's so-called 'One, Big, Beautiful Bill,' Act at the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC. AFP But what's in the bill? The most important aspect of Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act is tax cuts. In fact, Republicans who support the legislation say that the bill is much required as there would be a massive tax increase after December when tax breaks from Trump's first term expire. The legislation contains about $4.5 trillion in tax cuts. Big tax breaks: Under the bill, the existing tax brackets would become permanent. Moreover, it includes no taxes on tips, overtime pay, the ability to deduct interest payments for some automotive loans, along with a $6,000 deduction for older adults who earn no more than $75,000 a year. The bill also increases the deduction limit for state and local taxes (Salt). At present, there's a $10,000 cap on how much taxpayers can deduct from the amount they owe in federal taxes. However, Trump's bill now approved by the Senate raises that cap from $10,000 to $40,000. However, after five years, it would return to $10,000. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Funding for deportations: Trump says he needs more money to carry out mass deportations, and the legislation ensures its. The bill provides some $350 billion for Trump's border and national security agenda, including $46 billion for the US-Mexico border wall and $45 billion for 100,000 migrant detention facility beds, as he aims to fulfill his promise of the largest mass deportation operation in US history. The bill also earmarks money to hire 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers as well as Border Patrol officers. Senate staffers rest on the US Capitol steps at sunrise amid the struggle to pass US President Donald Trump's sweeping spending and tax bill, on Capitol Hill. Reuters Child tax credit: The Senate approved One Big Beautiful Bill also increases the child tax credit from $2,000 to $2,500 until 2028. More military spending: The bill allots $25 billion for the Golden Dome missile defence system, $29 billion for shipbuilding and $15 billion for nuclear deterrence, among other provisions. Slashing Medicaid and food stamps: In order to offset the revenue lost from the tax cuts, Trump's bill targets the Medicaid programme, which 72 million people rely on for health coverage. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD One of the big changes that the bill includes is the new work requirement for childless adults without disabilities. To qualify, the bill says, they would be required to work at least 80 hours per month from December 2026. The Senate-approved bill also requires states to conduct eligibility redeterminations for coverage every six months, rather than every 12 months based on current policy. The Congressional Budget Office states that the Medicaid cuts could result in about 11.8 million people becoming uninsured by 2034. The Senate bill calls on states to contribute more to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap), or food stamps, which is used by over 40 million low-income Americans. It also makes work requirements stricter, which critics say would likely eliminate millions of people from SNAP's rolls. Cuts to green energy: The bill rolls back policies that support clean energy. A tax break for people who buy new or used electric vehicles would expire on September 30, instead of at the end of 2032 under current law. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Much, much more: The One Big Beautiful Bill also calls for a new children's savings programme, called Trump Accounts, with a potential $1,000 deposit from the Treasury. Billions will also go for the Artemis moon mission and for the exploration of Mars. Moreover, a provision would increase the nation's debt limit, by $5 trillion, to allow continued borrowing to pay already accrued bills. The US Capitol stands behind a US flag after a narrow vote saw the passage of Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill in the Senate. Reuters What comes next? The Senate approved bill now heads to the House of Representatives before it can reach the president's desk to be signed into a law. However, the road through the House seems perilous. Many in the House, including some Republicans, have expressed issues with the legislation and the changes made by the Senate. However, President Trump has demanded for his party to get on board and pass the bill. 'We are on schedule — Let's keep it going, and be done before you and your family go on a July 4th vacation,' he wrote on Truth Social. 'To my GOP friends in the House: Stay united, have fun, and vote 'yay'.' With inputs from agencies
