The Department of Environmental Conservation was also on the scene with decontamination equipment and is evaluating any off-site impacts from the smoke as well as water runoff.
Riverside Police and Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services advised residents to keep their windows closed until all of the smoke dissipates.
According to its website, Crown Recycling Facility recycles scrap metal and disposes of solid waster and demolition debris, including asbestos. It had serviced Suffolk County and the five boroughs of New York City for more than 30 years.
Officials are expected to give an update on the fire early Wednesday afternoon.

Texas A&M mascot Reveille has eye removed after glaucoma diagnosis

Texas A&M announced Wednesday that Reveille X, the school's mascot, had to have an eye removed during surgery after she was diagnosed with glaucoma. The collie has served as A&M's mascot since April 30, 2021, when Reveille IX retired. Reveille is a central part of gameday activities at Texas A&M and runs out on the field ahead of home games before taking her normal spot on the sidelines. 'Under the watchful eye of her Mascot Corporals, it came to our attention that Miss Rev has been experiencing some discomfort and cloudiness in her right eye,' A&M president Mark Welsh said in a statement. Sadly, the issue has progressed and during a recent check-up, she was diagnosed with glaucoma. At the recommendation of our world-class veterinarians at the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Miss Rev underwent surgery earlier [Wednesday] to relieve any discomfort. During surgery, the veterinary team discovered signs of abnormal tissue, and out of an abundance of caution, removed her eye. The tissue was sent to an ocular pathologist for evaluation, which is standard practice.' Welsh said in his statement that Reveille would not make any public appearances while she recovers from her surgery, but that the school 'can expect Miss Rev to be back to enjoying all her favorite activities — cruising on Rev Force One, attending classes, cheering on the Aggies, and keeping our campus squirrels in line - this fall.' The first Reveille was adopted by A&M students in the 1930s and the mascot is officially listed as the highest-ranking member of school's Corps of Cadets. Members of the corps take care of Reveille and she goes everywhere with her caretakers and she's the only non-service dog allowed on campus building. According to Texas A&M tradition, if Reveille barks during a class she's in, the class is canceled.

Jesse Powell cleared by DoJ, slams FBI raid as ‘personally devastating'

Jesse Powell cleared by DoJ, slams FBI raid as 'personally devastating' originally appeared on TheStreet. The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) has closed its investigation into the co-founder of cryptocurrency trading platform Kraken, and no charges were filed. The probe originated from a September 2022 FBI raid on Powell's Los Angeles residence, conducted by agents who claimed they suspected Powell had committed cyberstalking and tampered with the online accounts of the Verge Center for the Arts, a Sacramento-based nonprofit. In 2022, the Verge leadership removed Powell as a board member of the organization for violating the group's basic 'principles'. Powell went on to sue Verge and its leaders for fraud and defamation.A U.S. attorney stated that a properly authorized investigation into allegations of criminal conduct had been opened, according to The New York Times, and the case was closed in April of this year. But the letter also said that authorities hold the option to reopen the investigation later on. In a statement to the New York Times on Tuesday, Jesse Powell said the FBI's raid on his home had been "personally and professionally devastating". He said he plans to press ahead with his lawsuit against Verge, the nonprofit he founded in 2007. Interestingly, on X, the founder wrote, "very glad to have this behind me. It never made sense, but neither does @rstormsf's trial. How quickly you can have your life upended. I am grateful for those who saw through it, and for my stellar legal team now, turning my attention back to Kraken." FBI crackdowns on crypto firms Powell's statement was also in solidarity with Roman Storm, the developer of Tornado Cash—a crypto mixing service that is supposed to make digital transactions untraceable. In 2022, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Treasury Department blacklisted another DeFi company, Tornado Cash, stating that it had facilitated the laundering of cybercrime proceeds, including over $455 million stolen by Lazarus, a North Korean hacking group, according to FBI also went after Samourai Wallet, in 2024, a Bitcoin wallet service which bears some resemblance to Tornado Cash, arresting its founders on charges of conspiring to launder money. During the administration of President Joe Biden, the crypto industry came under increased scrutiny, with a number of exchanges and their founders accused of money laundering and other crimes. Now, led by President Donald Trump, many of the cases are being dismissed, and some of the people involved were even granted presidential pardons. Polymarket's Derivatives Exchange Acquisition Sets Stage for a Return to US

Polymarket is returning to the U.S. The company on Monday acquired derivatives exchange and clearinghouse QCX for $112 million, paving the way for it to return to this market. The acquisition comes weeks after the Commodity Futures Trading Commission granted QCX a license to operate as a contract market. "With the acquisition of QCEX, we are laying the foundation to bring Polymarket home — re-entering the US as a fully regulated and compliant platform that will allow Americans to trade their opinions," Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan said in a press release. Polymarket operates a peer-to-peer prediction market, in which users bet on the outcome of events spanning politics, culture, and sports, with wagers denominated in cryptocurrency. The company, while based in New York City, has been barred from taking bets from U.S. residents since 2022, when the CFTC accused it of operating a derivatives trading platform without proper registration. Polymarket's users accurately predicted Donald Trump's victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris in last year's presidential race, even as many pollsters saw the contest as effectively a coin toss. Polymarket users bet nearly $3.7 billion on the outcome of the presidential election last year. Federal Probe Into Polymarket Dropped This Month In the days after the election, Coplan said Polymarket returning to the U.S. was "part of the plan." Shortly thereafter, Coplan's apartment was raided and his phone seized by FBI agents as part of a federal investigation into whether Polymarket had continued to accept U.S.-based bets in violation of its agreement with regulators. That investigation by the CFTC and Justice Department was dropped earlier this month, according to a Bloomberg report. The investigation into Polymarket was the latest in a string of Biden-era cryptocurrency cases to be closed by the Trump administration. Federal regulators earlier this year dropped cases against crypto exchanges Coinbase Global (COIN), Kraken, and Binance, as well as online brokerage Robinhood (HOOD). Polymarket is in talks to dive deeper into cryptocurrencies. The platform currently settles trades with Circle Internet Group's (CRCL) USDC, and Coplan on Wednesday told CNBC's "Squawk Box"' that it was "exploring" a stablecoin.
