‘Toxic RO Water Sold Under the Guise of Purity,' Alleges Ex-Minister Raut in Assembly

Nagpur: Senior Congress leader and former minister Nitin Raut on Monday accused private operators in Nagpur and other cities of selling contaminated water under the guise of 'RO purified' bottled water, thereby endangering public health. Raising the issue during the monsoon session of the state legislature, he demanded urgent action against such bogus companies and questioned the lack of regulatory enforcement. The demand received support from BJP MLAs as well, with Pravin Datke and Suresh Dhas calling for a crackdown on such practices. "Clean drinking water is a fundamental right, not a privilege. We cannot allow profiteering at the cost of public health," they said. Raut alleged that citizens are unknowingly consuming contaminated water at weddings, festivals, and even on a daily basis through jar deliveries from illegal plants operating in city lanes. "These operators fill water from wells, package it, and sell it without any transparency due to a lack of monitoring," he said. He further claimed that several such enterprises operate without the mandatory no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) or other competent local bodies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Despite the law requiring clearance before setting up bottling plants, many companies flout regulations in connivance with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials. There is a dangerous nexus, and public health is being compromised," he alleged. The North Nagpur MLA cited multiple cases of waterborne illnesses reported in recent months, blaming the unregulated supply chain. "Municipal corporations have conveniently looked the other way, claiming they lack the authority to act. Meanwhile, groundwater is being depleted, and people are falling ill," he added. FDA minister Narhari Zirwal admitted to gaps in enforcement and assured strict action. "All municipal corporations will be directed to take action. We will also soon convene a meeting of legislators on this issue," he said. Raut concluded by urging the state government to publish an immediate action plan to prevent further public exposure to contaminated water and to prosecute those illegally operating under the 'RO' label.

Homeopathic Doctors Can Now Prescribe Allopathic Medicines In Maharashtra. But On One Condition

The Maharashtra Medical Council allows homeopathic doctors to prescribe allopathic medicines after a six-month course but the Indian Medical Association opposes this In a move that has reignited a decade-long controversy, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has allowed homeopathic doctors to prescribe allopathic medicines, provided they have completed a six-month certification course in modern pharmacology. The decision, announced through a fresh MMC circular, is being hailed as 'legally valid" by supporters but is likely to face fresh opposition from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which has long opposed what it calls 'cross-pathy". According to a report by The Times of India, homeopathic practitioners in Maharashtra who possess a 'Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology" (CCMP) will be permitted to prescribe certain modern medicines, although the final list of approved drugs and permissible ailments remains under review. Registrations for eligible practitioners will begin on July 15. 'As per a Government of Maharashtra notification dated June 25, 2014, MMC directs all CCMP qualified doctors to register under MMC, for which MMC is launching a portal on its website for the registration of CCMP qualified doctors with specific instructions from July 15, 2025," TOI quoted the MMC's statement. 'We have received approval from the state government and the law department. The matter is also sub judice. Until then, we are carefully evaluating which medicines these doctors can be allowed to prescribe," said Dr Vinky Rughwani, administrator at MMC. Court Battle Since 2014 The roots of the debate trace back to 2014, when the Maharashtra government amended the Maharashtra Homeopathy Practitioners Act and the Maharashtra Medical Council Act of 1965. The amendment paved the way for homeopathic doctors to practice allopathy on the condition that they complete additional training. However, the IMA swiftly challenged the amendments in the Bombay High Court, which led to a ban on homeopaths prescribing allopathic drugs. Since then, legal and regulatory back-and-forths have kept the issue alive, with the state seemingly attempting to sidestep the ban in recent months. In December 2024, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a directive to chemists and medicine wholesalers, instructing them to sell allopathic medicines to homeopathic doctors who had completed the CCMP. Critics argued that the FDA had no jurisdiction to decide who qualifies as a medical practitioner. IMA Raises Red Flag IMA Maharashtra President Dr Santosh Kadam criticised the move, saying that the FDA is a drug regulator, not a medical licensing body. He claimed that the state government held consultations only with the Homeopathy Council, Homeopathy associations, and private colleges but did not invite the IMA for its input. 'Only the MMC can decide who is eligible to practice modern medicine," he said, adding that prior to the recent MMC circular, the directive lacked legal strength. 'Modern medicine is very complex and interrelated. My question is just by doing a course in pharmacology, how can a homoeopath be on par with an MBBS doctor. I think political pressure and a bid to raise fees in Homoeopathy colleges prompted this decision," TOI quoted Kadam as saying. The decision reportedly came after a closed-door meeting involving Maharashtra's Rural Development Minister Hasan Mushrif, BJP MLA Randhir Savarkar, representatives from the MMC, and associations of homeopathic doctors. Sources indicate the MMC was instructed to finally implement the 2014 amendment, nearly a decade after it was passed. While supporters argue the move addresses a shortage of licensed doctors in rural areas, critics warn that it opens the door to unqualified practice and risks public health. Obesity, Chronic Illnesses, And Mental Health: Study Says US Children Are Sicker Than Ever

The foundation of a nation's health and prosperity lies in the well-being of its children. However, a concerning trend has emerged in the US, where children's health has declined over the past 17 years, with alarming increases in obesity, chronic diseases, and mental health issues like depression, threatening their future and the nation's prosperity. The study titled as," Trends in US Children's Mortality, Chronic Conditions, Obesity, Functional Status, and Symptoms" suggests that, "the health of US children has worsened across a wide range of health indicator domains over the past 17 years. The broad scope of this deterioration highlights the need to identify and address the root causes of this fundamental decline in the nation's health." Much of what researchers found was already known, but the study paints a comprehensive picture by examining various aspects of children's physical and mental health at the same time. "The surprising part of the study wasn't any with any single statistic; it was that there's 170 indicators, eight data sources, all showing the same thing: a generalized decline in kids' health," said Dr. Christopher Forrest, one of the authors of the study published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr has brought children's health to the forefront of the national policy conversation, unveiling in May a much-anticipated "Make America Healthy Again" report that described kids as undernourished and overmedicated, and raised concerns about their lack of physical activity. But the Trump administration's actions - including cuts to federal health agencies, Medicaid and scientific research - are not likely to reverse the trend, according to outside experts who reviewed Monday's study. "The health of kids in America is not as good as it should be, not as good as the other countries, and the current policies of this administration are definitely going to make it worse," said Dr. Frederick Rivara, a pediatrician and researcher at the Seattle Children's Hospital and UW Medicine in Seattle. He co-authored an editorial accompanying the new study. Forrest and his colleagues analyzed surveys, electronic health records from 10 pediatric health systems and international mortality statistics. Among their findings: Obesity rates for US children 2-19 years old rose from 17% in 2007-2008 to about 21% in 2021-2023. A US child in 2023 was 15% to 20% more likely than a U.S. child in 2011 to have a chronic condition such as anxiety, depression or sleep apnea, according to data reported by parents and doctors. Annual prevalence rates for 97 chronic conditions recorded by doctors rose from about 40% in 2011 to about 46% in 2023. Early onset of menstruation, trouble sleeping, limitations in activity, physical symptoms, depressive symptoms and loneliness also increased among American kids during the study period. American children were around 1.8 times more likely to die than kids in other high-income countries from 2007-2022. Being born premature and sudden unexpected death were much higher among U.S. infants, and firearm-related incidents and motor vehicle crashes were much more common among 1-19-year-old American kids than among those the same age in other countries examined.
