Boston Celtics jersey history No. 28 - Tony Delk (2002-03)
To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Celtics Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team.
With 25 of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Celtics to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover.
And for today's article, we will continue with the seventh of 14 people to wear the No. 28, Boston guard alum Tony Delk. After ending his college career at Kentucky, Delk was picked up with the 16th overall selection of the 1996 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets.
The Covington, Tennessee native also played for the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, and Phoenix Suns before he was dealt to Boston Celtics in 2002. His stay with the team would span parts of two seasons before he'd be dealt to the Dallas Mavericks in 2003.
During his time suiting up for the Celtics, Delk wore only jersey Nos. 28 and 7 and put up 9.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.

White, who was the second-to-last pick of the first round back in 2017, wasn't as highly regarded as Edgecombe in college. However, the former D-II hooper developed into a two-way stud and helped the Celtics win it all in 2024. The injured 2025-26 Celtics are far from that title team at the moment, leaving the Sixers with the more palpable championship aspirations. But, Philadelphia isn't completely healthy either due to center Joel Embiid's lurking knee issues and Paul George's summer surgery. As a result, White and Edgecombe will be asked to step up for their respective squads next season. And since the Celtics and Sixers both inhabit the Atlantic Division, White and Edgecombe are destined for an on-court battle in the coming months. Vucevic, 34, has spent 14 years in the NBA between the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, and Chicago Bulls. He has been a consistent source of points and rebounds for the majority of his career, averaging a double-double (17.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game). He is currently entering the final year of his current contract and is set to earn $21.4 million this season before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
