Klang girl makes K-Pop history, Malaysia's first idol set to debut
The 19-year-old from Klang, Selangor, first captured hearts during her run on Mnet's I-LAND 2: N/a, where her poised performances, multilingual fluency and bright personality stood out.
Her journey reached a new high after she placed second in the show's preliminary voting, securing her a spot in Leanbranding's upcoming global girl group.
While the group's name and official debut date remain under wraps, Leanbranding has confirmed that the debut is slated for late May — and Lingling is officially part of the lineup.
Fans welcomed another exciting milestone today as Lingling launched her personal Instagram account, symbolising her transition from trainee to K-pop idol.
Her past as a YG Entertainment trainee and her fluency in Chinese, Malay, English, and Korean earned her affectionate nicknames online such as #PolyglotGenius and #WakeOneInterpreter.
Beyond her debut, Lingling's success marks a proud moment for Malaysian representation in the global K-pop scene.
As anticipation builds, Leanbranding promises more details to be revealed soon via its official social media platforms, Korea JoongAng Daily reported.

African Shaolin monks break the Internet with their fists, flying kicks

More than just for self defense, it is a cherished tradition handed down for many generations, dating back to 1,500 years ago. But recently, a Shaolin performance went viral, not because of the admirable synchronisation or the flurry of fists and kicks. More amazing was the fact that it was performed by a group of Africans. However, netizens were divided over the video. Netizen @TemiR5U, for example, said it was an African problem to be obsessed over the cultures of some other countries instead of their own. 'This is another form of colonisation. Don't they have their own culture and tradition to demonstrate? You can never see a Chinese demonstration of other ethnic cultures and traditions in China,' said @sirjona88. But several others believed this was a positive thing. On another note, some netizens couldn't wrap their heads over the fact that Africans could be practising Shaolin martial arts. Take it from @IbaiBasabe who wondered if the video was likely AI generated. However, a brief check on Google reveals 2023, the Global Times reported that Zambia hosted the inaugural African Shaolin Kung Fu Games, a milestone event organised by the Shaolin Temple in the country. Held at the Shaolin Cultural Center in Zambia, the six-day programme ran from June 21 to June 26 and aimed to boost the popularity of Shaolin martial arts across Africa while fostering deeper cultural exchange. The event brought together more than 150 participants representing 23 African countries and regions, making it a truly continental affair. Adding to the significance, the Abbot of China's original Shaolin Temple, Grand Monk Shi Yongxin, travelled to Zambia with a delegation of monks to lead and participate in the cultural exchange segment of the event. No AI here, just disciplined Africans performing Shaolin martial arts.
