Teachers in Sarangani brave flooded river to get home

GMA Network22-06-2025

Several teachers were caught in a dangerous situation as they attempted to cross a swollen river after heavy rains triggered flooding in Sitio Banlas, Barangay Kihan, Malapatan, Sarangani.
The incident happened on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
According to one of the teachers, Jailene Tusan, who uploaded the video, they were on their way home from Akbual Elementary School in Barangay Upper Suyan when they saw the river's rough waters.
To get across and return home safely, some concerned residents volunteered to assist the teachers through the strong current.
Tusan said there is no bridge in the area, which was why they had to cross the river by riding habal-habal motorcycles.
GMA Regional TV One Mindanao is reaching out to the school officials for a statement, as of this writing.
Meanwhile, in Zamboanga City, floodwaters submerged parts of Sta. Catalina, including the open field of an elementary school on Friday, June 20, 2025.
Parents also struggled fetching their children from school because classrooms were also affected.
A parent has called on the government to address the persistent flooding at the school every during downpour.
'Kung aabot sa gobyerno, sila kung ano ang maitulong nila roon, at least siyempre yung epekto roon sa mga bata,' a parent, Javier Munap Amirul, said.
In Zamboanga Sibugay, floodwaters entered the houses in Purok Uno, Veterans Village, Ipil town due to continuous rainfall.
State weather bureau PAGASA said the flooding in some parts of Mindanao is due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone.
In its forecast early morning on Saturday, June 21, 2025, PAGASA said the ITCZ would bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over the Zamboanga Peninsula, BARMM, SOCCSKSARGEN, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, and Palawan, and partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over the rest of Mindanao. —GMA Regional TV News

LPA trough, Habagat to bring rains over several areas

The trough or extension of a low pressure area (LPA) and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) will bring rains over several areas on Monday, PAGASA said in its weather forecast. The Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Aurora, and Quezon will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the trough of the LPA. Moderate to at times heavy rains may possibly cause flash floods or landslides. At 3 a.m., the LPA was estimated to be located at 1,230 km east of Central Luzon. The Southwest Monsoon meanwhile is affecting Visayas, Mindanao, Central Luzon, and Southern Luzon. Metro Manila, Mindanao, MIMAROPA, and the rest of Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and Visayas will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms. Flash floods or landslides may possibly result from moderate to at times heavy rains. Localized thunderstorms meanwhile will cause partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over the rest of Luzon. During severe thunderstorms, flash floods or landslides may possibly occur. Coastal waters will be slight to moderate throughout the country. Sunrise was at 5:30 a.m. while sunset will be at 6:29 p.m. —KG, GMA Integrated News

Areas in Bukidnon, Davao Region flooded after continuous rains

Some areas in Bukidnon and in the Davao Region were flooded over the weekend due to the strong rains brought about by the southwest monsoon or Habagat, including a residential area in Davao del Sur where a wake had to be moved as waters reached waist-high. A river in Barangay Tacul in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur was recorded to have overflowed with the water spilling over to nearby houses, and forcing a wake to be moved in a nearby gymnasium, as reported by Rgil Relator on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. Residents of Purok Bankerohan and Purok Kawayan who were trapped in their residences were also evacuated by authorities. Official figures regarding affected individuals have yet to be released. Floods were also recorded in Bukidnon, where zero visibility was reported along the Talaingod Bukidnon national highway. A road along Sitio Saladoc in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental was likewise impassable, due to the debris caused by the rains. The state weather bureau PAGASA said the southwest monsoon or Habagat is expected to continue to bring rains over most of the country on Sunday. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

Rains bring floods to Mandaluyong streets

Streets of Barangay Plainview in Mandaluyong City were flooded after the continuous rains over the weekend, forcing residents to wade through the waters filled with floating garbage and even dead rats. The floods were caused by the continuous rains on Saturday, June 28, and continued to rise until the early hours of Sunday, June 29, forcing residents to wade through for them to get home. A child was seen trying to swim, while others hitched a ride with bigger vehicles such as trucks. According to Barangay Plainview desk officer Carl John Lagumbay, the floods came as the canals were blocked, preventing the pumping stations from operating properly. 'Sa ibang drainage po, may mga basura lang po talaga na naba-block po 'yung parang pinaka-way po ng tubig kaya medyo natatagalan po ng konti,' he said in a report by Bea Pinlac on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. ''Yung ibang buga po kasi ng tubig, imbis po na papasok sa drainage, palabas po 'yung buga ng tubig,' he added. (In some of the drainages, there really is trash blocking the way of the water so it takes time. Instead of flowing into the drainage, the water flowed away.)
