India: Over 10,000 shifted to safer locations amid torrential rainfall in Tripura
Triggered by intense moisture incursion, the heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has disrupted connectivity, inundated low-lying areas, and forced thousands into relief camps, even as authorities brace for more downpours in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Agartala, has issued a red alert across all districts of Tripura after incessant monsoon rains battered the state over the past 48 hours.
Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, intensified by strong moisture incursion, has severely disrupted connectivity and forced thousands into relief camps.
In a release issued by the IMD, active monsoon conditions are forecasted to persist, with a high likelihood of further heavy rains today and tomorrow. In response, state authorities have mobilised rescue teams and activated emergency protocols.
Bodhjung Nagar in West Tripura recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours at 198.5 mm, followed by Kailashahar in Unakoti (192.2 mm), Jirania in West Tripura (175.5 mm), and Agartala (140 mm).
A total of 14 rescue teams--11 in West Tripura and 3 in Unakoti--comprising personnel from NDRF, SDRF, Assam Rifles, Fire Services, Civil Defence, Bharat Scouts, and Aapda Mitra volunteers have been deployed.
Sixty relief camps have been established across West Tripura, Khowai, Unakoti, and North Tripura, currently sheltering approximately 2,800 families and over 10,600 people.
Numerous roads in North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, and West Tripura were temporarily blocked due to landslides and fallen trees. Quick response units from SDRF, the Forest Department, and PWD have cleared many of the affected routes. Preliminary reports show that 201 houses have been damaged, with 92 severely and 109 partially damaged, mostly in Gomati, Khowai, Sepahijala, and North Tripura.
The Howrah River in Agartala reached 10.91 meters at 5 PM, crossing the danger level, although it has shown a receding trend over the past hour after remaining stagnant since morning. In Agartala city, stormwater drainage systems comprising 17 pump houses effectively cleared water stagnation within 2 to 3 hours despite high-intensity rainfall in a short period.
Tripura Chief Minister, along with senior officials including the MP (Rajya Sabha), Mayor of Agartala, Revenue Secretary, DM and SP of West Tripura, visited several affected areas and relief camps including those at Chandrapur, Pratapgarh English Medium School, Vivekananda School, Pragati School, Tulsibati School, and B. R. Ambedkar School.
Authorities have advised citizens to stay calm, avoid venturing near rivers and low-lying areas, and follow instructions from local administrations. The state government continues to work in close coordination with all departments to ensure relief, rehabilitation, and risk mitigation efforts are carried out efficiently and effectively.

India: Tanker vessel reports explosion off Kandla coast, all 21 crew evacuated safely
Kandla (Gujarat): A tanker vessel bound for Oman reported an explosion shortly after completing a methanol discharge at the Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, prompting a swift response from the port and Coast Guard authorities, a port official said on Sunday. However, no fire or smoke was reported in the incident, the official said. Speaking to ANI, the Public relations officer (PRO) for the Deendayal Port Authority, Om Prakash Dadlani, said that a total of 21 crew members were onboard the tanker vessel, who were later safely evacuated by the rescue team. "A tanker vessel named MV Fulda departed for Oman post methanol discharge at Oil Jetty No. 2. We received input about an explosion; however, no fire or smoke was reported. Twenty-one crew members were onboard the tanker vessel. The Maritime Response Coordination Committee informed the Coast Guard about the incident. Teams of the Coast Guard and Deendayal Port Authority reached the incident site. Our rescue team has safely evacuated all crew members," Dadlani said. Earlier on July 1, demonstrating rapid operational readiness and its unwavering commitment to seafarer safety, the Indian Navy undertook a high-risk firefighting and rescue operation on board Palau-flagged tanker MT Yi Cheng 6 on 29 June 2025 in the North Arabian Sea, successfully stabilising the situation and ensuring the safety of 14 Indian crew members. According to a release, in the early hours of 29 June, INS Tabar, on a mission-based deployment, received a Mayday distress call from MT Yi Cheng 6. The vessel reported a major fire outbreak in its engine room whilst operating approximately 80 nautical miles east of Fujairah, UAE. Responding swiftly, INS Tabar proceeded at maximum speed to assist. The ship reached the vicinity of the distressed vessel and, upon arrival, established communication with the Master of the vessel and commenced firefighting operations. Prioritising crew safety, seven crew members were immediately evacuated to INS Tabar using the ship's boats. No injuries were reported, and all crew were examined by Tabar's medical team. The remaining crew members, including the Master, stayed onboard to assist with fire containment. INS Tabar deployed a six-member firefighting and damage control team with firefighting equipment. Initial firefighting efforts from the Indian Naval personnel and the ship's crew resulted in a considerable reduction in the intensity of the fire, with smoke restricted to the engine room. The firefighting effort was further reinforced with 13 additional Indian Navy personnel (5 officers and 8 sailors). Sustained efforts by the Indian Navy's firefighting team, along with crew members, have successfully brought the fire under control. Continuous temperature checks and monitoring is being undertaken. INS Tabar remains on station for continued support. The valiant effort of Indian Naval personnel has ensured the safety of the ship along with all Indian crew members. This incident once again highlights the Indian Navy's rapid response capability, operational preparedness, humanitarian approach to maritime safety and reaffirms India's role as the first responder in the Indian Ocean Region. Earlier in June, a Singapore-flagged cargo ship MV Wan Hai 503 caught fire after an explosion while en route from Colombo to Nhava Sheva, near Mumbai, off the coast of Kerala, India.

Dalai Lama appreciates birthday celebrations, urges people to cultivate peace of mind, compassion
Dharamshala: Ahead of his 90th birthday, the 14th Dalai Lama expressed his appreciation for the celebrations being held in his honour by urging people to focus on cultivating compassion and peace of mind. In a post on X, the Dalai Lama wrote, "On the occasion of my 90th birthday, I understand that well-wishers and friends in many places, including Tibetan communities, are gathering for celebrations. I particularly appreciate the fact that many of you are using the occasion to engage in initiatives that highlight the importance of compassion, warm-heartedness, and altruism." He humbly referred to himself as "just a simple Buddhist monk" and noted that he doesn't normally engage in birthday celebrations. However, he wished to share some thoughts on the occasion. "While it is important to work for material development, it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate, not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone. Through this, you will contribute to making the world a better place," the Tibetan leader affirmed. The Dalai Lama reaffirmed his commitment to promoting human values, religious harmony, and the preservation of Tibetan culture and heritage. "As for myself, I will continue to focus on my commitments of promoting human values, and religious harmony, drawing attention to the ancient Indian wisdom which explains the workings of mind and emotions, and Tibetan culture and heritage, which has so much potential to contribute to the world through its emphasis on peace of mind and compassion," he said. The Dalai Lama drew inspiration from the teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters, such as Shantideva, whose aspiration he strives to uphold. "I develop determination and courage in my daily life through the teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters such as Shantideva, whose following aspiration I strive to uphold," he said. "As long as space endures, As long as sentient beings remain, Until then, may I too remain To dispel the miseries of the world," he added. The Dalai Lama expressed his gratitude to those celebrating his birthday and using the occasion to cultivate peace of mind and compassion. "Thank you for using the opportunity of my birthday to cultivate peace of mind and compassion," he said. Celebrations are underway in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, ahead of the 90th birthday of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama. According to the Gregorian calendar, the Dalai Lama's birthday is officially observed on July 6. The occasion is being marked with festive spirit and devotion by Tibetan communities and followers across the region. On July 2, the Dalai Lama stated that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, a foundation established by him, can only recognise future reincarnations, and no one else has the authority to decide on the matter. This statement rules out any say for China in the process of naming the next Dalai Lama. In a statement on Wednesday, Dalai Lama stated, "The process by which a future Dalai Lama is to be recognized has been clearly established in the 24 September 2011 statement, which states that responsibility for doing so will rest exclusively with members of the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. They should consult the various heads of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the reliable oath-bound Dharma Protectors who are linked inseparably to the lineage of the Dalai Lamas. They should accordingly carry out the procedures of search and recognition in accordance with past tradition." "I hereby reiterate that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has sole authority to recognise the future reincarnation; no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter, he added.
