Women police officers to act as student link officers to tackle rising suicide cases in Bhubaneswar
The decision was announced during a programme, 'Commissionerate Police - Student Connect: For Better Safety and Security of Students', organised at the Police Seva Bhawan here on Thursday. This comes after two Nepali students studying in a private university here allegedly died by suicide in a span of three months.
The link officers will help address the psychological or legal issues faced by students, and offer assistance to them without needing their physical appearance at the police stations. Commissionerate Police's IT and social media cell ACP, Suchismita Das has been designated as the nodal officer for the students in distress.
During the event, police commissioner S Dev Datta Singh asked the educational institutions to enhance CCTV coverage on their respective campuses. He also informed that self defence programmes will be organised in schools and colleges here to train the students to protect themselves from any potential harm or violence. This apart, awareness drives on cyber crimes will also be organised in all educational institutions, Singh added.
The first session on a series of such upcoming activities was also conducted on the day. About 170 female students participated and interacted with the senior officers. They also expressed their opinions to strengthen the safety and security of the women.
The city police highlighted the need for such interactive sessions and called upon the students to act as volunteers and report incidents of harassment without any fear. Additional CP Narasingha Bhol, DCP Jagmohan Meena and other senior officers were present.

Gurgaon stunt videos on tractors near Cyber Hub spark probe; cops suspect AI-generated clips; no number plates, loud music, zero traffic
GURGAON: Two videos of unidentified persons performing stunts on city roads on two tractors near Cyber Hub have been making rounds on social media for the past two days, leaving even the police puzzled. The tractor occupants can be seen speeding near the Golf Course road without any check by the police. Surprisingly, the videos show minimal traffic on a road that typically experiences heavy congestion. Moreover, the tractors were seen without the number plates, with 'Shera' and 'Sniper' mentioned on the number plates. ASI Sandeep, a police spokesperson, stated, 'We found the videos on the internet and have started our investigation, but these are seemingly AI-generated videos.' An ACP rank officer added that authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area before taking appropriate legal action. Several people have been charged with acts like rash driving, performing stunts on busy roads, and endangering lives in the past. On July 16, DLF 1 police registered a case against unidentified persons after a video of a Lamborghini performing stunts on Golf Course Road went viral. An FIR was lodged under BNS Sections 125 (endangering life), 281 (rash driving), and 57 (abetment of offences by the public or by more than ten persons). Authorities included Section 57 because multiple vehicles were seen trailing the Lamborghini while recording the stunt, suggesting coordinated participation. Police have yet to arrest the Lamborghini driver or identify the owner as the vehicle lacked a number plate. Earlier, on June 8, police arrested four students following a social media video that captured reckless driving and dangerous stunts on the Dwarka Expressway near Bajghera police station.

2 held for theft at mobile shop in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad: Two persons, Deepak Paswan (26) and Arshad (24), were arrested for allegedly stealing five mobile phones from a shop in Tronica City on Friday. On July 2, Azad, a resident of Qasim Vihar, Thana Tronica City, Ghaziabad, reported that five mobile phones worth over Rs 1 lakh were stolen from Ayesha Mobile Shop by unknown thieves. Based on the plaintiff's complaint, a case was registered against unknown persons under section 305(A) (theft) BNS. Siddharth Gautam, ACP of Loni, said police checked the CCTV footage of the shop and nearby areas, following which the two suspects, Paswan and Arshad, were identified and arrested from Khanpur Tiraaha in the Tronica City area. A total of 10 mobile phones worth over Rs 2 lakh of different brands and the Splendor motorcycle used in the incident were recovered from the possession of the accused. Upon questioning, the accused revealed that they are friends and live near each other in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, and have a habit of substance abuse. "On June 28, 2025, they first scouted the area on a motorcycle and then stopped near Ayesha Mobile Shop in Rampur. They decided to steal the mobile phones when they saw a boy sleeping with his head on the shop's counter," the ACP said. While Arshad handled the motorcycle, Deepak went inside the shop and stole five mobile phones of different brands from the counter. He then joined Arshad outside, and they rode back towards Delhi. On the way, one Vivo Y200 E 5G phone fell out of their pocket, but they kept the remaining four phones. They also stole six other phones from different places in Delhi, making a total of 10 phones in their possession. They were on their way to Baghpat to sell these phones when police caught them.

Deity idol vandalised in Maharajpur, suspects held
Kanpur: An idol of Goddess Kali was vandalised at a temple in Bhevli village of the Maharajpur police station area in Kanpur at 4 am on Friday morning. A priest and a minor child apprehended two suspects at the scene. Hearing the commotion, villagers arrived at the temple and informed the police by calling 112. The police have arrested both suspects on the spot and are interrogating them. One hand of the idol is damaged. The temple priest, Paras, reported that around midnight, two middle-aged men parked a motorcycle near the temple and went inside, vandalised and hurled abuses at Hindu deities. Hearing the noise, he sent a boy named Lavkush, son of Ramgopal, who was staying with him, into the village. He then raised an alarm to call others. The villagers who arrived at the scene locked the two men inside the temple and informed the police. One suspect is named Sheetlaprasad Nishad (50), son of Shatrughan, residing at 112 Shyam Nagar, Kanpur, and the other is Shahid (45), residing in Basmandi. ACP Chakeri Abhishek Pandey and Maharajpur station officer Sanjay Kumar Pandey inspected the site. They said that a new idol has been ordered, and for now, the broken right hand of the idol has been reattached with plaster to ensure that worship is not disrupted until the arrival of a new idol. The ACP stated that both suspects were found to be in an inebriated state. A case has been registered against both suspects based on the complaint and they are being sent to jail.
