Delhi HC upholds Medha Patkar's conviction in defamation case
A single-judge Bench of Justice Shalinder Kaur rejected the revision plea filed by Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar, challenging a Saket Court's order that had earlier dismissed her criminal appeal and upheld her conviction.
Justice Shalinder Kaur observed that Medha Patkar failed to point out any procedural defect that would amount to a miscarriage of justice in the case, noting that her conviction was based on due consideration of the evidence and applicable law.
However, in a bit of relief to Patkar, the Delhi High Court modified the probation condition requiring her to appear before the trial court every three months, permitting her to appear virtually or be represented by an advocate. Further, it refused to entertain Medha Patkar's plea challenging the dismissal of her application to introduce a new witness in her defamation case against Saxena.
In 2001, Saxena filed two defamation suits against Patkar— one over allegedly derogatory remarks made during a television interview, and the other concerning a press statement. The legal tussle arose from an earlier suit filed by Patkar in 2000, accusing Saxena of publishing defamatory advertisements targeting her and the NBA.
In July last year, Metropolitan Magistrate Raghav Sharma sentenced Patkar to five months in jail and ordered her to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation to Saxena.
On appeal, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Vishal Singh of the Saket Court upheld Patkar's conviction but ordered her to be released on probation of good conduct for a period of one year, subject to prior deposit of a compensation amount of Rs 1 lakh, which will be released in favour of the complainant (Saxena).
It had opined that an insensitive approach towards others' reputation and abuse of the right to free speech must be met with criminal sanction, adding that Patkar, being herself a person of repute, must know the value of one's reputation and how defamation can result in loss of face and public esteem of the victim.
Advocate Gajinder Kumar, along with advocates Kiran Jai, Chandra Shekhar, Drishti, and Somya Arya, represented L-G Saxena before the Delhi High Court.

PM Modi to inaugurate Bengaluru's Yellow Line Metro on Aug 10

He said the Yellow Line will cater to close to eight lakh riders and the 'infamous Silk Board jam' will be addressed greatly. Public transport is the only option to reduce traffic congestion. "Together, these projects will benefit nearly 25 lakh people in Bengaluru South," he said. The MP said by inaugurating it on August 10, the Yellow Line Metro project would meet the August 15 deadline. Surya said this could happen because of Modi's personal insistence that this must be open to public without any further delay. Surya, who is also the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) national president, quoted Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who said on 'X', "I am pleased to announce that the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India has kindly agreed to inaugurate 19.15 km Yellow Line from RV Road to Bommasandra of Bangaluru metro with 16 stations at the cost of Rs 5,056.99 crore and lay the foundation stone of 44.65 km of Bangalore phase-3 at the cost of Rs 15,611 Crore on 10th August 2025." Surya had staged a demonstration to open the Yellow Line of Bengaluru Metro Rail project recently.

SMEs in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad seek govt intervention to cushion blow of Trump's tariffs on India
Small-scale industries in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have urged the Central and Maharashtra governments to take immediate steps to mitigate the negative effects of the 25 per cent tariffs on imports from India proposed by United States President Donald Trump. Industrialist Arun Firodia has called for a drastic reduction in electricity charges as well as interest rates to ensure the sustainability of engineering exports. Firodia, who is the chairman of Kinetic Group, said drastic steps like a reduction in electricity rates have to be taken to keep up the competitiveness of Indian engineering goods in the US and world market. 'Our industries should get electricity at Rs 2 per unit,' he said. At present, industrial units purchase electricity at Rs 8.32 per unit in the state, which is one of the highest in the country. 'The government must take steps to increase the purchase power of the consumer by reducing domestic taxation,' he said. Last week, Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports from August 7, alongside an additional but unspecified 'penalty' for India's defence and energy imports from Russia. Small- and medium-scale industries in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad are mostly vendors and sub-vendors of the automotive industry in the district. In Pimpri-Chinchwad alone, more than 5,000 small and medium-scale industries employ over 3-4 lakh people in various engineering operations. SMEs are also involved in exports directly or indirectly. Precious stones, engineering goods, pharmaceutical, textiles are some of the major exports from the country to the USA. Abhay Bhor, president of the Federation of Small Scale Industries Association in Pimpri-Chinchwad, urged both the state and Central government to take urgent steps to mitigate the effects of the tariff. 'Engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, electronics and industrial packaging units are based on the US export markets for their survival. The tariff, Bhor said, will result in loss of jobs as well as closure of the industries. 'Most industries are going through a rough patch with this tariff; it can really be a body blow to the industries,' he said. Bhor requested Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to immediately interfere to ensure this crisis is resolved. 'The sector requires handholding and the chief minister must take urgent steps to help the sector,' he said.
