But the gloomy seven-time world champion was cleared of blame by veteran commentator and former F1 driver Martin Brundle, who said the rear axle of Hamilton's Ferrari "broke up under braking".
Brundle said it was "highly unusual", adding: "I don't think there's anyone more surprised at that than Lewis Hamilton.
"It looks like a technical issue. Nobody will be more surprised than Lewis. It's almost like the engine sort of stalled out and every time he pulled another shift, it's just locked the rear axle."
Hamilton ended up qualifying 18th on the 20-car grid just 24 hours after his highly-charged comments about winning a championship at Ferrari and not suffering the plight of fellow former multiple champions Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel.
He struggled throughout the day at the sprawling and majestic Spa-Francorchamps circuit -- one of his favourites -- and ran wide at Stavelot early in SQ1 before his spin at the chicane.
Hamilton said he had never experienced that kind of spin before.
Facing reporters later, he was asked what had gone wrong and responded: "I spun."
He added that it was "the first time, I think, in my career" that he had spun in that way.
"There's not really a lot to say," he added. "Obviously, I'm massively frustrated.
"A lot of work has gone in and to be there is not really great. So hopefully tomorrow will be better."

Las Vegas will play host to the 2026 World Cup draw on December 5, according to multiple reports on Tuesday. Leon Marchand geared up for an assault on the 200m individual medley world record Wednesday as he cruised through the heats to start his world championship campaign in Singapore. France's Olympic hero, who won four individual golds at last year's Paris Games, is looking to break Ryan Lochte's 200m IM world record of 1min 54.00sec, which has stood since 2011. Marchand is competing only in the medley events in Singapore and he hinted he would go all out for the record in Wednesday evening's semi-finals. "I'll try to get close to my best time tonight," said Marchand, whose personal best in the event is only six hundredths of a second outside the record. "I want to start faster than usual and see what happens." Marchand clocked the fastest time in Wednesday morning's heats in 1:57.63. Japan's Kosuke Makino was second in 1:57.74, with American Shaine Casas third in 1:57.76. Marchand's biggest rival is more likely to be Lochte's world record, having already taken down Michael Phelps's 400m IM mark two years ago. "It was good, I swam well, I think I pretty much did what I wanted to do," Marchand said after his heat. Zamalek have completed the signing of defensive midfielder Ahmed Rabie from NBE Club, the Cairo giants announced on Tuesday, marking their seventh summer signing so far Zamalek have been active in the transfer market, bringing in goalkeeper El-Mahdi Soliman, Angolan winger Chico Banza, forwards Amr Nasser and Ahmed Sherif, Moroccan U-20 international Abdelhamid Maali, and Swedish-Palestinian winger Adam Kaied.
