Maoist sub-zonal commander killed, one arrested in Latehar
Daltonganj: Two days after Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) Pappu Lohra and his aide were killed, security forces in Latehar gunned down a sub-zonal commander of CPI (Maoist) and arrested another operative in a gunfight in the early hours of Monday.

Manish Yadav (30), the deceased sub-zonal commander, carried a bounty of Rs 5 lakh. Wanted in 40 criminal cases in Jharkhand, Manish was a native of Chakar Bandha village under Doomarya police station limits in Bihar's Gaya district. Kundan Kherwar (35), another Maoist zonal commander, was nabbed along with a X 95 automatic weapon. Wanted in 27 cases across Jharkhand, Kundan is a native of Manika police station limits in Latehar.
A X 95 was also found on Manish, the police said. Latehar SP Kumar Gaurav said a gun battle broke out between a Maoist unit and a joint team of district police and a small action team of the India Reserve Battalion at Neeche Douna between 1:30-2 am on Monday. "The fight, which lasted 45 minutes," Gaurav said. Neecha Douna, which has been a Maoist stronghold for years, is 20 kilometres from Netarhat police station.
After Manish was killed and Kundan was apprehended, the rest of the squad made a hasty retreat, Gaurav said.
"The operation was held based on a tip that a Maoist squad had assembled at Neeche Douna," the SP said.
JJMP chief Lohra, along with his second-in-command Prabhat Ganjhu, were killed in an encounter with the district police at Ichabar under Latehar police station limits on May 24. Meanwhile, SP Palamu said that an exchange of firing between the Palamu police and the dasta of the Maoists of Nitesh is underway under the Hussainabad police station limits in Palamu. Nitesh carries a reward of Rs 10 lakh.

SC allows Lalit Modi to seek civil remedy in plea against Rs 10 crores fine imposed by ED
New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday has granted liberty to Lalit Modi to move to a civil court to seek remedy against a Rs 10.65 crore fine imposed on him by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in a Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) case in connection with the 2009 season of the Indian Premier League. Modi had sought directions for the recovery of the fine amount from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), instead of him. A bench of Justices PS Narasimha and R Mahadevan disposed of Modi's plea, allowing him to seek civil remedy, after the counsel appearing for Modi sought to withdraw the same. Modi had moved the top court against the decision of the Bombay High Court in dismissing his plea, with a Rs 1 lakh cost. During the hearing, Modi's counsel argued that as per various earlier judicial decisions, the case is well within the Writ jurisdiction provided under Article 226 of the Constitution of India. However, the bench was of the view that the BCCI has been held as 'not a State' for recovery of the said fine imposed by the ED. 'BCCI is to be held to be 'not a state.' Recovery can't be equivalent to State', the bench stated. Modi's counsel then sought liberty to seek civil remedy by moving to a civil court in the matter. The Court agreed and disposed of the plea after noting that the same is not maintainable under Article 226 of the Constitution. In May 2018, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had levied penalties on the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) and its former chief N. Srinivasan, among others, over alleged violations in the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) regulations in the 2009 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Apart from an 82.66 Cr fine on the BCCI, and an 11.53 Cr fine on Srinivasan, penalties have also been imposed upon the former chairman of the IPL, Lalit Modi (10.65 Cr), former BCCI treasurer MP Pandove (9.72 Cr) and the State Bank of Travancore (7 Cr). The penalties amount to a total of 121.66 Cr. On July 20, 2011, the ED had issued show cause notices to Modi and the BCCI under provisions of FEMA regarding the alleged transfer of a sum of Rs 243.45 crores to Cricket South Africa without prior permission of the RBI, ahead of an IPL tournament in 2009. The ED was subsequently allowed by the Bombay High Court to summon several former BCCI officials, including Manohar and then secretary N Srinivasan, as witnesses in the matter. (ANI)

Plea in Supreme Court seeks judicial intervention into Kolkata rape case
New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): A plea (letter petition) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking urgent judicial intervention in the recent alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student in South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata. The petitioner, Advocate Satyam Singh Rajput, has sought a court-monitored CBI investigation of the incident to ensure an impartial and time-bound probe, free from political influence. Furthermore, the plea seeks immediate protection for the victim, her family members, witnesses, and her legal representatives. The plea has also sought directions from the top court to implement comprehensive safety measures in educational institutions, including mandatory CCTV surveillance, women's safety cells, and regular security audits. Additionally, the plea also seeks an interim compensation of Rs 50 lakhs for the victim's medical treatment, rehabilitation and legal expenses. Moreover, the plea urges the Court to take action against public representatives engaging in victim-shaming. On the evening of June 25, a female student was allegedly gang-raped inside a law college in Kolkata's Kasba. The police have arrested all three accused within 24 hours. The three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) were former students or staff members of the same law college. According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the A.C.J.M. of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for a proper investigation into the case. The alleged sexual assault took place between 7:30 pm and 10 pm on Wednesday (June 25) within the law college premises. According to the official, one of the accused allegedly committed sexual assault, while the others were involved in the crime. The victim's family filed a police complaint against the accused and the police have taken swift action in the matter. Two of the accused, Monojit Mishra and Zaib Ahmed, were arrested the next day (June 26), near Siddhartha Shankar Roy Sishu Udyan, close to Talbagan Crossing in Kolkata. Pramit Mukhopadhyay was arrested later the same night at his residence. The police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused. The official had visited the site and kept it under protection till they had done a forensic examination. They requested custody remand for further investigation. (ANI)

Head Constable of Delhi Police suffers from chest pain after being caught red-handed while taking bribe
New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): A Head Constable of Delhi Police, currently under treatment at Burari Hospital, suffered chest pain after he was caught red-handed while taking a bribe at Burari Police Station. According to the Vigilance Department of Delhi Police, a head constable was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 and subsequently suffered chest pain requiring hospitalisation. The incident occurred at the Burari police station in North Delhi on Friday night. The team rushed him to Burari Hospital, and now he is under treatment, officials added. A team from the Vigilance department had laid a trap for the head constable after a local businessman complained about the officer demanding a bribe of Rs 75,000 to not remove the mobile tower from his terrace. The complainant was instructed to offer the bribe in three instalments of Rs 25,000 each. The head constable was apprehended while accepting the bribe, but he suffered chest pain and was rushed to the hospital. According to Vigilance, the officer is currently stable and will be arrested once discharged from the hospital. An investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the officer's involvement in the bribery case. Earlier, the Rouse Avenue Court had granted bail to a traffic cop on June 14 who was allegedly collecting bribe money through a man, being used as a helper, from transporters and other persons in the Samaypur Badli Traffic Circle. The helper, identified as Dalip Kumar, filed a complaint at the Vigilance Branch, claiming that the accused cop had been using him to collect bribe money for the past two years, though he was not aware of it. An FIR was registered by the vigilance, and accused Assistant Sub-Inspector Vijay Kumar was arrested red-handed on May 21, 2025, when he was receiving Rs 30,000 collected by Dalip Kumar. Special Judge Atul Krishna Agrawal granted bail to Vijay Kumar after considering the facts, including the custody of the accused and parity with the co-accused, who is enlarged on bail. The complainant has retracted his allegations in the complaint. 'Considering the period of judicial custody of the accused as well as the fact that the recovery whatsoever has already been effected, and also the fact that co-accused Head Ct. Surender has already been granted bail by the Learned Concerned Court vide order dated 06.06.2025, accused Vijay Kumar is admitted to bail on his furnishing a personal bond in the sum of Rs. 50,000 with one surety in the like amount,' Special Judge Agrawal ordered on June 12.
