‘Shall I Speak In Marathi?' PM Modi's Banter With Ujjwal Nikam Amid Language Debate
PM Modi personally informed Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam of his nomination to the Rajya Sabha in a candid call.
Moments after Ujjwal Nikam, the Special Public Prosecutor in 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu, he revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally informed him about his nomination.
Nikam said PM Modi candidly called him to inform about his nomination to the upper house of the parliament and had started speaking in Marathi.
'Yesterday, PM Narendra Modi called me to inform about my nomination. He asked me if he should talk in Hindi or in Marathi. Both of us started laughing," he said as quoted by news agency ANI.

Nikam further said that the Prime Minister informed him about the president's decision to which he immediately acknowledged and agreed.
'He then spoke to me in Marathi and told me that the President wants to give me responsibility, after which he informed me about the President's decision. I immediately said yes. I thank the party leadership…" he added.
Language Row In Maharashtra
The interaction between the two came at a time when the Thackeray brothers– Shiv Sena (UBT's) Uddhav Thackeray and MNS' Raj Thackeray– have targeted the BJP-led state government for trying to 'impose' Hindi in Maharashtra and migrants for not speaking Marathi.
Earlier today, an auto-rickshaw driver in Maharashtra's Palghar was thrashed in public, allegedly by the supporters of Uddhav Sena and Raj Thackeray's MNS over his refusal to speak Marathi.
A video of the auto-rickshaw driver, a migrant, went viral, showing him arguing with another migrant from Uttar Pradesh, Bhavesh Padolia, at Virar station. He said in the video that he would only speak Hindi when he was asked why he was not speaking in Marathi.
Last week, MNS workers threw stones and vandalised the office of a businessman named Sushil Kedia, who had earlier issued an open dare to Raj Thackeray, stating that he would not be intimidated by MNS workers or be forced to learn Marathi under pressure.
Earlier this month, a shopkeeper in Mumbai's Mira Road was assaulted after he allegedly refused to speak in Marathi.
Nikam Nominated To Rajya Sabha
In a Gazette notification put out by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday, four members were nominated to the Upper House of the Parliament, which comprised people from varied backgrounds, including diplomacy, the legal fraternity, historian, and social worker.
Among the nominees is Ujjwal Nikam, one of India's most distinguished public prosecutors, best known for serving as the Special Public Prosecutor in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks trial and several other high-profile criminal cases.
The three other nominees include seasoned diplomat Harsh Vardhan Shringla, historian Dr Meenakshi Jain, and Kerala-based teacher and social worker C. Sadanandan Master.

With ‘Sadhana Samavesha', CM ‘threatening' Congress high command, alleges Vijayendra
Karnataka BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra on Friday alleged that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would be conducting the 'Sadhana Samavesha' in Mysuru on Saturday in order to 'threaten' the Congress high command. Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, he said the CM is on the verge of tendering his resignation, and therefore he has planned the convention to 'threaten' the party leadership. 'Whenever there is a threat to his position, Mr. Siddaramaiah remembers the AHINDA communities. When the BJP took out a padayatra over the MUDA scam, he held conventions here and in other places,' Mr. Vijayendra said. The BJP State president accused the Chief Minister of organising the 'Sadhana Samavesha' just to save his chair. 'He keeps praising AHINDA communities, but today, his mask has fallen. He has failed to deliver justice to them. Mr. Siddaramaiah has no commitment or concern for their development,' he alleged. Predicting a significant political development in November, Mr. Vijayendra, while replying to questions on the leadership change in the State, said Congress leaders are themselves saying that there is a 'power-sharing agreement' between Mr. Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar in regard to the Chief Minister's post. Now, the situation has arisen where Mr. Siddaramaiah has to resign, he claimed. Alleging that the State administrative machinery has collapsed, he said that the government has achieved nothing over the last two-and-half years, and claimed that the people are frustrated over the administration. 'Why are they holding the 'Samavesha' when they have achieved nothing?' he asked.

RJD targets PM Modi over Union Minister Lalan Singh's visit to mutton party during Sawan
PATNA: Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Friday took a potshot on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Bihar's Motihari, fuelling ongoing controversy over a 'mutton party' attended by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh during the auspicious month of 'Sawan'. Leader of Opposition in Bihar assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said that PM Modi would 'honour' the leaders who held a 'mutton' party during the holy month of 'Sawan' during his visit to the state on Friday. 'The 'mutton' party has exposed the double standards of these people', he asserted. On his social media post X, Tejashwi further said, 'BJP would now say that it is 'punya' that Lalan Singh is feeding mutton to his people and workers, because he is their ally and a union minister. They won't say anything now.' He said that he hoped that PM Modi would react to 'mutton' party during his visit to Motihari. On Thursday, Union Minister Lalan Singh and Bihar Rural Development minister Ashok Choudhary attended a 'mutton' party at Suryagarha in Lakhsarai district after laying foundation stone for several development projects. Suryagarha falls under Munger Lok Sabha constituency, which he represents in the parliament. BJP had attacked Tejashwi and VIP chief Mukesh Sahani after their photographs went viral on social media eating fish during 'Navratra' last year. In addition, saffron party assailed RJD chief Lalu Prasad when he hosted a 'mutton' feast during the month of Sawan, which was also attended by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. During the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign, PM Modi accused Tejashwi of insulting the sentiments of the Hindus by eating fish during 'Navratra'. The BJP also posted the video showing both Tejashwi and Sahani enjoying fish during election campaign. The 'mutton' feast attended by Lalan Singh and Ashok Choudhary during the month of 'Sawan' is likely to be raised during coming assembly elections in the state, due in October-November this year.

BJP respects Bengali 'ashmita,' says PM Modi at Bengal rally; accuses TMC of being 'barrier' to development of state
Stating that Bengal used to be the centre of India's development and an employment hub, he said, "But now the picture has changed. Today, the youth are leaving West Bengal. Even for small jobs, they have to go to other states." "Bengal wants change, wants development…I am telling you that it is possible to change the situation in Bengal. After the BJP government comes here, West Bengal will become one of the most industrialized states," he said. Responding to allegations by Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee and the TMC regarding the harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in several BJP-ruled states, including Assam, Gujarat, Delhi, Odisha, and Maharashtra, PM Modi said that Bengali pride is of utmost importance for the BJP. "For BJP, Bengali identity is above all. But what is happening here? Trinamool is threatening West Bengal's culture for its own sake. It is bringing in infiltrators, making fake identity cards. It has created an ecosystem, as a result, the country is being harmed, Bengal is being harmed. They have crossed all limits (for appeasement),' he said. 'But from the land of Maa Durga, I want to say that those who are not citizens of India, those who have infiltrated, will be dealt with in a fair manner according to the constitution of India. BJP will not allow any conspiracy against Bengali identity to succeed. This is Modi's guarantee,' he added. Modi further accused the TMC government of being "partisan." 'Imagine for a moment a place like Murshidabad where there is rioting, violence in small incidents and the police work for one party, where there is no hope of justice, how is it possible to invest there. Here the state government cannot protect people's lives and shops. That is why investors are worried,' he claimed. "The Trinamool's goon tax is creating obstacles to investment in Bengal. Here the government has only allowed its leaders to openly commit corruption. That is why many companies have left West Bengal. That is why the youth community here is not able to progress. The state is in a bad condition. That is why today everyone is saying, 'Trinamool Hatao, save Bengal',' he alleged. Referring to the school jobs scam, Modi alleged thousands of teachers were rendered jobless due to corruption at the grassroots. "Jobless families are facing problems, while the future of students is in darkness. The situation is such that the court is saying that this is systemic corruption. Trinamool has put both the present and future of Bengal in crisis,' he said. In apparent reference to the sexual assault and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August last year, Modi said, 'This land belongs to Dr Kadambari Ganguly, who was the first modern woman doctor. Today is her birthday. But hospitals in West Bengal are not safe. You have seen how Trinamool tried to hide the criminals after the atrocities were committed on a woman doctor.'
