Oman: Hotels see 2.3% growth in guests by March-end

Oman's hospitality sector continues its upward momentum, as the total number of guests in 3 and 5-star hotels across the country reached 610,176 by the end of March 2025 — a 2.3 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to the latest data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) through its official social media channels.
The statistics also revealed a hotel occupancy rate of 59.5 per cent, while total revenues for the sector stood at RO 79.43 million, reflecting a notable 10.6 per cent growth compared to March of last year.
These figures point to a steady recovery in Oman's tourism industry, fuelled by the government's continuous efforts to promote tourism, diversify the national economy and attract investments in alignment with Oman Vision 2040.
The modest yet steady increase in guest numbers and the more robust rise in revenues indicate a positive trend for the tourism sector, which is regaining momentum following the global disruptions caused by the pandemic and regional economic challenges.
The higher revenues, in particular, suggest an increase in guest spending and possibly longer stays — both of which are crucial indicators of a healthier tourism economy.
Oman has steadily positioned itself as a sought-after travel destination thanks to its diverse tourism offerings — from pristine beaches and rugged mountains to rich cultural heritage sites and eco-tourism experiences.
Flexible visa policies, enhanced infrastructure and active global promotion campaigns by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism have played a central role in boosting Oman's visibility on the international tourism map.
Domestic tourism continues to form the backbone of the industry's resilience, especially during weekends and national holidays. Popular destinations such as the mountains of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, beaches in Dhofar; and the forts and heritage villages of the interior regions continue to attract large numbers of local tourists.
Efforts to improve road access, hospitality services and visitor facilities have made internal travel more convenient and enjoyable.
Under Oman Vision 2040, the tourism sector is designated as one of the key drivers of economic diversification. Government initiatives have focused on expanding investment in eco-tourism, heritage resorts and adventure tourism — particularly in governorates with untapped potential.
The ministry is also leveraging digital transformation, with new platforms and campaigns aimed at enhancing the visibility of Omani destinations and offering interactive experiences that appeal to modern travellers.
Despite positive indicators, several challenges remain. These include increasing hotel room capacity, training and retaining skilled workforce in the hospitality sector; and improving air connectivity with key international markets.
The region's competitive tourism landscape further emphasises the need for innovative marketing approaches and the continuous enhancement of the overall visitor experience.
Looking ahead, the sector is expected to maintain its growth trajectory throughout 2025. With the onset of summer travel season and high-profile events such as the Khareef Dhofar Season and winter tourism initiatives in Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, further increases in occupancy rates and revenues are anticipated.
Moreover, the opening of new hotels, combined with targeted investments in rural and cultural tourism, will help diversify the market and distribute tourism activity across various regions.
The latest statistics published by the NCSI underscore the gradual but steady rebound of Oman's tourism sector. The increase in guest numbers and revenues by March 2025 is a testament to the effective policies and long-term vision guiding the industry.
As Oman continues to balance growth with sustainability, the goal remains to position the country as a leading tourism destination — one that celebrates its authenticity while meeting the expectations of global travellers.

In the age of the metro and air taxis, will we still be travelling on buses in Dubai years from now?

Anyone settling into their seat on the metro at Dubai International Airport and contemplating a glide across the city, perhaps as far as the Expo 2020 station tens of kilometres away, might wonder why they would ever travel on a bus again. The humble bus can easily appear to be a product of a bygone era in a progressive city in which multibillion-dirham rail projects and plans for flying taxis are taking shape. As construction continues apace on Dubai Metro's Blue Line, which will complement the existing red and green lines, and as the city looks ahead to the launch of even electric air taxis, could the bus slide further down the transport food chain? If evidence from around the world is anything to go by, the answer is probably to be no, because even when a city invests heavily in top-line rail-based transit – metro and tram lines are often built along what were the busiest few bus routes – buses still play a vital role. Peter White, professor emeritus at the University of Westminster in the UK and a steering group member for a 2018 report, Buses in Urban Developments, says that buses are sometimes easier to access than metro stations with steps and lifts. Serving communities They also tend to be better suited to areas with lower density of population, enabling a more comprehensive public transport network to be provided. 'It may also be important to continue to offer some bus services running parallel to a new urban rail line, to avoid undue interchange for short trips, and to cater for those unable to walk the longer distances to urban rail stations – typically with a substantially wider spacing than bus stops,' says Prof White, who is the author of the textbook Public Transport: Its Planning, Management and Operation. When a metro or tram system is developed, factors such as the reconfiguration of bus networks often lead to a growth in bus ridership. Dr Alexander Wray, a transport researcher at Western University in Canada, has seen the bus system flourish in his hometown of Kitchener-Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, since the city's tram system opened in 2019. While there was a fall in the number of buses on the road, Dr Wray says that ridership grew as new bus services to connect to tram stations were inaugurated. Another key factor behind the growth in passenger numbers was, he says, increases in bus frequency. 'From the evidence, we know what people look for is the ability to just walk up to a stop and know that there's a vehicle coming in the next 10 minutes. That breeds confidence in a transit system,' Dr Wray says. While cutting the wait times between buses is seen as the key factor that draws in passengers, making buses more comfortable also helps. 'Generally all the modern buses tend to have Wi-Fi and power points, and there's a bit more effort being put into the quality of bus services to make them more competitive with the car,' says Peter Jones, professor of transport and sustainable development at University College London and a former member of the Dubai Future Council for Transportation. Boosting connectivity Many other cities demonstrate the continued relevance of bus services even when rail-based transit is on offer. In Nottingham in England and Edinburgh in Scotland, Prof White says, the trams serve only a few corridors, whereas the buses provide comprehensive networks. Buses carried 41.6 million passengers in Nottingham in 2023-24, compared to 15.5 million on the tramway, while in Edinburgh the difference was even greater, with 110 million bus trips in 2023 compared to 10.1 million tram journeys. 'Both [Edinburgh and Nottingham bus] operators run very modern fleets, with a strong emphasis on high quality of service and passenger information,' Prof White says. 'Services run largely on a commercial basis – that is, covering costs, including provision of vehicles, from passenger revenue, after allowing for compensation for free concessionary travel, and a grant received by all local bus services.' In suburban North America the technology-driven emergence of bus services that ply flexible rather than fixed routes has been seen. The bus goes to where the passengers are, something that can be particularly helpful for, for example, people with mobility issues or those who do not drive. 'We also see them in some rural areas in North America where it just doesn't make sense to run a fixed route service at all,' Dr Wray says. 'So they operate almost like a shared Uber in that it's like a small 15, 20-passenger bus that's just driving around all day. And you're booking your times and where you need to go. 'The app and the algorithm will match you up with the next available good routing for that vehicle. So it's never following a fixed route: it's meeting demand where it is.' In Dubai, the bus services on offer are continuing to improve just as the number of passengers using them increases: the number of bus journeys made in the emirate last year increased by eight per cent to 188 million. The Roads and Transport Authority previously announced that it was upgrading stations and depots and aiming to achieve 'seamless connectivity' with the Metro and taxis. The fleet itself is enjoying an uplift, with hundreds of low-emission buses on order along with 40 all-electric vehicles. While analysts say that investment in buses often lags behind that of urban rail, Dubai passengers are set to see improvements. So in the UAE, as in many other places, if urban rail – or even electric air taxi – transport grows, the bus will retain a central role in helping everyone to get around.

Tucked within the conserved heart of the Maqta Conservation Area, Al Maqta'a Museum, housed in the lovingly restored Al Maqta'a Fort, offers a glimpse into Abu Dhabi's early days. It is a reconstruction of the former customs house and police headquarters built in the late 1950s, alongside a causeway linking Abu Dhabi Island to the mainland, where officials monitored entry and traffic. It operated as such until 1971, when the unification of the UAE took place, since goods were then no longer required to be checked at this border. It reopened as a small, but information-packed, interactive museum celebrating its socio-cultural and historic importance in April 2025, as a joint project between Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Police. Why go there? This museum might be small, but its story is powerful. As part of Al Maqta Conservation Area, alongside the 18th-century Maqta'a Tower – constructed to strengthen the then-settlement's defences – and the original causeway from the 1950s, it tells the story of Abu Dhabi's transformation from a humble fishing settlement into a thriving modern metropolis. The tower still stands in the middle of the naturally formed waterway (the khor), conserved by DCT – Abu Dhabi to protect it from damage caused by repeated exposure to the marine environment. What you'll see The exhibit begins with a tour of Al Maqta'a Tower, which once guarded the shallow waters of the khor, guarding entry to Abu Dhabi Island. You'll also learn about other fortifications for defence, such as Al Hosn Tower. Moving into the 1950s-era customs house and police station, visitors encounter rugged gypsum‑and‑coral‑stone architecture and interactive zones that emphasise the fort's role as the gateway to the emirate. Highlights include vintage police vehicles, period uniforms and archival documentation that chart Abu Dhabi Police's development through time. A 1968 Toyota FJ43 Soft Top also sits in the museum, the same model of car once used for public transport in Abu Dhabi. This site sits within a broader heritage precinct along the old Maqta'a crossing, where you'll also find buildings and structures of the pre-oil and post-oil periods. Consider pairing your visit with a walk around the tower and nearby conservation structures. Replicas of the bridge and tower make for picturesque photo stops. Children's programming and live police shows, as well as seasonal activations, are also planned for the museum in coming months. Star attraction Right now, a temporary exhibition on Umm an-Nar sits beyond the lovely little gift shop, with an interactive screen that allows you to learn all about the archaeological site and what has been uncovered there in recent years. There's a map of a cemetery and you can click on each grave to learn more about the people buried there. It's fascinating. There's also a medieval Byzantine coin, the first to be found in Eastern Arabia, that was discovered during the tower's restoration by DCT Abu Dhabi – a significant find. What to know before you go This is a great spot for families, with a playground outside and the interactive exhibits are sure to keep older children from getting bored. Visitors are also handed a 'passport' to take around the exhibits, so you can stop at five stations to stamp the document as you go around. It's not an overly flashy space, but rich in narrative, and allows visitors to skim through the exhibits or dive deeper for further information if they want. You'll need at least an hour if you'd like to leisurely wander through and read everything. It's also worth grabbing a coffee and pastry or bite to eat at the restaurant, La Petite, which boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and lovely views of the khor beyond.
