
Salaries on the rise for financial advisors due to shortfall in skills
Joanne Keane, the CEO of LIA, an organisation for the education and development of finance professionals, says that industry surveys point to the likelihood of future shortfalls in skilled and experienced financial experts across a range of disciplines.
One clear implication of this is that those with the requisite skills, already keenly sought after, will be in even greater demand in the coming years. As a result, salaries for these skilled individuals will also very likely be on the rise.
LIA is the association for the education and development of financial professionals (advisors and planners) across Ireland. Basically, LIA equips its members with the qualifications, knowledge, and ongoing development to 'excel in a changing financial landscape' — offering accredited qualifications that enhance knowledge, competency, and career progression.
In this Q&A interview, Joanne Keane outlines some of the main trends within the financial planning and advice sectors. She also explains why embedding financial literacy from schools and onwards, and why giving consumers a greater understanding of financial matters would be hugely beneficial to the Irish economy.
What are the current career trends in financial planning in Ireland?
The financial planning profession continues to experience sustained demand, with firms across Ireland seeking qualified advisers who can provide holistic, client-centred guidance. Roles in retirement planning, protection, and long-term investment advice are particularly in demand as we know there is going to be a shortfall of suitably qualified individuals in the coming years.
Increasingly, employers are placing a premium on advisers who combine technical qualifications with strong interpersonal skills such as client communication, empathy, and behavioural coaching. With a talent shortage in key areas, companies face competition to recruit and retain skilled professionals. This has led to higher pay packages, especially for advisers who invest in continuous upskilling.
Starting salaries for qualified professionals typically range from €50,000 to €60,000, with senior roles in certain specialist practices reaching up to €250,000 per annum.
How is the financial advice profession evolving, and what qualifications do advisers need today?
The profession is becoming increasingly specialised and advice-driven. In a world saturated with financial products and online noise, it's harder than ever for consumers to make informed choices without expert support. Financial advice is built on trust, and advisers today are expected to combine deep technical expertise with strong communication skills. Their role is not only to guide clients through complex financial decisions, especially in volatile conditions, but also to help them avoid costly mistakes.
Central Bank of Ireland-approved qualifications like the QFA remain essential, but advisers are increasingly pursuing specialist credentials in areas such as pensions, investment management, risk management, and behavioural finance. Many QFAs are now enhancing their knowledge and skills through our Level 9 Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning, leading to the globally recognised Certified Financial Planner designation.
Flexible learning models such as micro credentials and stackable short courses are also growing in popularity, allowing advisers to tailor their development to meet the needs of their clients. Continuous learning is no longer optional; it's becoming a core part of staying relevant in a fast-evolving, advice-driven landscape.
What are the biggest financial literacy challenges facing Irish consumers, and what can be done to support better education?
The latest LIA research highlights some stark realities: nearly half of adults in Ireland say they are unprepared for their financial future, and over 80% report that financial stress affects their mental health. Pension coverage among younger adults and middle-income earners remains low, and many struggle with basic budgeting and long-term planning.
To address this, we need to embed financial literacy earlier, starting in schools, and expand access to simple, practical, and relatable resources. LIA is playing its part through programmes like Smart Money Habits, which deliver financial wellbeing training through sports partnerships with the GPA, Rugby Players Ireland, Sport Ireland and others. We believe in meeting people where they are and tailoring education to their life stage and priorities.
What impact are economic changes (e.g. inflation, interest rates, or budget decisions) having on consumer attitudes toward financial planning?
We've seen a shift in consumer attitudes over the past 12–18 months. The impact of inflation and recent economic volatility has heightened awareness of the need for financial planning but also made it harder for many to take action. Despite some easing in interest rates, the rising cost of living continues to put pressure on households, and many people still feel they can't afford to save or invest.
Our research shows that many people are worried, but they don't always know where to start. That's where trusted financial advisers can play a transformational role—bringing clarity, offering reassurance, and helping people take small steps that build confidence. Our goal is to continue to highlight the importance of seeking financial advice, with the aim of increasing the number of consumers engaging in the process, resulting in better financial and mental outcomes for them and their loved ones and closing the gap in financial literacy and planning across the population.

1.6 billion bottles and cans returned through Deposit Return Scheme
The Irish public has returned over 1.6 billion bottles and cans through the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) since its launch in February 2024. New figures from Re-turn, the administrator of the scheme, show 798 million more containers are now being recycled each year compared to before the scheme began. Recycling rates have risen from just 49% to an estimated 91%. 76% of these containers are captured directly through the DRS and a further 15% collected via mixed dry recycling. "The Board is very encouraged by the strong performance and early impact of the scheme since its launch in February of last year," said Tony Keohane, Chair of the Board of Re-turn. "Re-turn has delivered a Deposit Return Scheme that is already achieving measurable environmental results and social impact, including the return of over 1.6 billion bottles and cans and a significant increase in Ireland's national recycling rate for drinks containers. "This has been driven by extraordinary collaboration across government, retailers, producers and the wider supply chain, and most importantly by the enthusiastic participation of the Irish public," he added. Ciaran Foley, CEO of Re-turn, said these latest recycling figures are far beyond what we had projected to achieve. "They speak to the commitment of the Irish people to sustainability and their desire to support the vision of a greener, cleaner Ireland," he said. "Additionally, the social impact of the scheme and the engagement with it from community groups across the country has exceeded any and all expectations. "Schools, clubs and charities all over Ireland have engaged with and utilised the scheme to raise funds for a wide variety of worthy causes," he pointed out.

Northern Ireland economy set for boost from British-India trade deal
A NEWLY signed British-India trade agreement is expected to pour £50 million into Northern Ireland's economy. The deal, which is part of the British government's wider Plan for Change, is a major milestone in international trade and promises wide-ranging benefits for Northern Ireland's key industries and workforce. The agreement, officially signed today by Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds and India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, coincides with a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The overall British-India trade package is valued at nearly £6 billion and is projected to create more than 2,200 jobs across Britain and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland's advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors are set to benefit the most. These sectors, which account for about 30% of local employment, will benefit from the removal or reduction of costly tariffs. In addition, local medical technology firms will see duties on medical devices, which currently range from 8.25% to 13.75%, slashed or eliminated over the next decade. One of the most notable wins comes for Northern Ireland's Irish whiskey industry. Duties on exports to India will be immediately halved from 150% to 75% and gradually lowered to 40% over ten years. Producers will also gain greater flexibility in sourcing ingredients and packaging, allowing them to better compete in the rapidly growing Indian market. Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Hilary Benn described the agreement as a 'landmark deal' with real and immediate benefits. 'This agreement will help further unlock the huge potential for growth across Northern Ireland, including its thriving services and technology sectors,' he said. The deal is particularly promising for exporters. Last year, 143 Northern Ireland companies exported £65 million worth of goods to India—a figure now expected to rise sharply thanks to streamlined customs procedures and a dramatic drop in India's trade-weighted average tariff from 15% to just 3%. Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasised the local impact: 'The millions brought to Northern Ireland each year from the deal we've signed with India today will be keenly felt across local communities—whether that's higher wages for workers, more choice for shoppers, or increased overseas sales for businesses.' Among those welcoming the deal is Belfast-based diagnostic kit manufacturer Biopanda. Sales Manager Philip McKee said, 'We value the business we've already done in India, and the UK-India FTA should allow our distributors to offer a wider range of our products at lower prices. That's a win for us and a win for consumers in India.' As part of the broader benefits package, Northern Ireland workers could see wages rise in line with a British and NI-wide uplift of £2.2 billion annually. Shoppers may also benefit from cheaper clothing, shoes, and food products due to reduced tariffs on imported Indian goods. Britain already imports £11 billion worth of goods from India. With this agreement now in place, businesses across Northern Ireland are expected to enjoy easier and cheaper access to critical components and materials, particularly in areas like consumer goods and manufacturing.
