The Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced on Sunday that Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati had left hospital after treatment for viral meningitis.
The two-time Ballon d'Or winner missed Spain's friendly win over Japan on Friday in the women's world champions' last warm-up match before the start of Euro 2025 next week.
The RFEF statement revealed that the Barcelona player would now link up with Spain's Euro squad "in the coming days", although she is unlikely to figure in their opening matches.
Spain begin their Women's Euro 2025 campaign against neighbours Portugal next Thursday in Bern. They are also drawn with Belgium and Italy in Group B.
Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Viral meningitis is less serious than the rarer bacterial variant, which can lead to death within 24 hours.

Real Madrid and Juve take a European classic to the global stage

Juventus will come into this game as underdogs. Trent Alexander-Arnold impressed for Real Madrid against Salzburg in the group stages. Picture: Ayman Aref / NurPhoto via AFP The Fifa Club World Cup in the USA has thrown up plenty of surprises, no more so than with Manchester City and Inter Milan both exiting the tournament at the last 16 stage on Monday. ALSO READ: Al-Hilal knock Man City out of Club World Cup Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia and Fluminense of Brazil will meet in the quarterfinals instead, a last eight tie it is safe to say not many would have staked their Betway cash on. Real v Juve – One giant to stand tall On Tuesday evening South African time, however, one European giant will reach the quarterfinals, as Real Madrid and Juventus go head-to-head in the last 16 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The meeting of these two famous sides was an expected outcome from the group stages, with Real Madrid topping Group H and Juventus finishing second in Group G behind Man City. Real Madrid arrived in the USA under new leadership, Carlo Ancelotti having left the club at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. He was replaced by Xabi Alonso, the former Real, Liverpool and Spanish international midfield maestro having cut his coaching teeth at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. Real started the tournament slowly, with a 1-1 draw against Al Hilal, but picked up the pace with wins over Mexico's Pachuca and Austria's RB Salzburg. New signing Trent Alexander-Arnold impressed in the 3-0 win over Salzburg. And he is expected to start again on Tuesday even though club captain Dani Carvajal is available after a long-term injury. Juventus will come into this game as underdogs, on the back of an underwhelming season in Italy. Head coach Igor Tudor arrived in March and did get them into next season's Uefa Champions League with a fourth-placed Serie A finish. Madrid favourites But Juventus have a squad nowhere near the calibre of Real. The Old Lady, indeed, were absolutely torn to shreds by City, losing 5-2 in their final Group G match. The smart money would be on Real on Tuesday evening, and the latest Betway odds have them at 1.72 to win. Juventus are at 4.60 with a draw at 4.00. New look Orlando Pirates face uphill battle to dethrone well-oiled Sundowns

Photo: BackpagePix Image: BACKPAGEPIX Orlando Pirates are gearing up to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns and the rest of the Betway Premiership next season, but if the previous campaign is anything to go by, toppling the would-be champions will require far more than just ambition and new signings. By all accounts, the Buccaneers enjoyed one of their best seasons in recent years, collecting an impressive 61 points from a shortened 28-match season — impacted by Royal AM's mid-season disqualification. Despite this strong showing, they still finished 13 points behind Sundowns, who extended their domestic dominance in what was yet another seamless season for the Chloorkop-based outfit. That same 13-point gap also separated Pirates from third-placed Stellenbosch, underlining how far ahead the top two clubs were from the rest of the pack. However, while the Sea Robbers showed signs of real progress, the major challenge remains: how to close the gulf between themselves and Sundowns. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading The Soweto-based outfit has not been shy about their intentions. The club has moved swiftly in the transfer market, securing a number of key signings aimed at strengthening the squad for the upcoming campaign. These reinforcements are meant to not only keep the team competitive domestically but also bolster their CAF ambitions after finishing in the last four with a 3-2 loss to champions Pyramids. However, the excitement around the fresh talent comes with potential challenges. The biggest curveball for the Soweto giants is the unexpected departure of Spanish coach Jose Riveiro. After laying down a solid foundation over the past three years, his exit threatens to disrupt the momentum that had been carefully built. In his place comes Moroccan tactician Abdeslam Ouaddou, who faces the immediate task of adjusting to a top-tier team while instilling his own identity and style. With a new coach at the helm, there's every chance that the team's playing philosophy may shift. Ouaddou may have different tactical preferences and could opt for new combinations or players not heavily relied upon last season. This period of adjustment could slow down the team's momentum, especially early in the campaign. Adding to the complexity is the influx of new players — potentially close to 10 or more — into the squad. While this offers depth and competition and a lot of excitement, it also means several players will need time to settle in, build chemistry, and adapt to the demands of the new coach and system. Such transitions rarely yield immediate success.

Austrian GP delayed after Sainz' Williams catches fire

The start of Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix was aborted and delayed by 10 minutes after Carlos Sainz was unable to leave the grid in his Williams for the formation lap. After taking a push from the marshals, the Spanish driver chased after the rest of the field and was set to start from the pit-lane until his rear brakes caught fire. The race distance was reduced by one lap to 70 laps. Sainz's car was beyond rapid repair and he was forced to withdraw from the race. The conditions for the race were hot with air temperatures touching 32 degrees Celsius and the track temperature recorded at 54 degrees. "I cannot tell you the temperature of the seat," said two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin as he waited for the re-start.
