AI, blockchain technology can enhance audit quality and compliance
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that while advanced technologies bring numerous benefits, they also present new opportunities for corruption, fraud, and abuse of trust if not properly governed.
'From a governance standpoint, even the most robust systems can be manipulated if those managing them lack integrity and accountability,' he said.
He said this when officiating the International Conference on Technology, Management and Sustainability (ICTMS 2025), organised by the Accounting Research Institute (ARI), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), here today.
Speaking to reporters later, Azam said the MACC is actively developing a new system aimed at enhancing the efficiency and impact of anti-corruption enforcement efforts.
According to him, the adoption of modern technology has significantly accelerated the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) investigation and intelligence processes, with most cases now being resolved within three to six months, compared to previous years.
Meanwhile, Azam said the MACC is also in discussions with the Attorney-General's Chambers to implement a Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA), an initiative focused on the recovery of large sums of money to be returned to the country.
'This new approach will involve setting policy for cases that emphasise not just prosecution, but also the recovery of funds, particularly in high-profile cases,' he said.

Agrobank allocates RM200 million for Agrofood Financing Fund 2025

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 1): Agrobank has earmarked RM200 million for its Agrofood Financing Fund (DPA) 2025 to support national food security and promote the long-term sustainability of Malaysia's agricultural and agrofood sectors. The fund provides financing facilities to farming communities engaged in agricultural and agrofood production activities — ranging from upstream to downstream — including related support services. The goal is to encourage the adoption of agrotechnology and enhance the resilience of the agrofood industry. Agrobank Chief Executive Officer Dato Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin said the bank, as the implementing agency, offers financing between RM50,000 and RM5 million to eligible agricultural entrepreneurs at a profit rate of just three percent per annum. 'The financing covers fixed capital needs such as asset purchases and development costs, as well as working capital,' he said. 'It also supports the entire agrofood value chain, including food production like planting, farming and fishing, along with processing, distribution, marketing, and food preparation services.' Tengku Ahmad said the initiative reinforces Agrobank's role as a development financial institution (DFI) committed to providing inclusive, sustainable and accessible financing to farming communities and agro-industry players. 'This effort is aligned with the government's aim to boost the competitiveness of the nation's agri-food sector,' he added. The handing over of the DPA 2025 was witnessed by Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup during a ceremony held at the Sabah International Convention Centre here today.

MACC steps up anti-graft drive under 13MP
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will enhance its operational capabilities, including forensic investigations and asset recovery, as part of efforts to strengthen the fight against corruption following the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the emphasis on governance, integrity, and accountability in the 13MP aligns with the agency's commitment to tackling corruption and abuse of power in a more comprehensive manner. "The MACC will continue to intensify efforts to combat corruption, leakages, and abuse of power by boosting operational capacity, forensic investigations, asset recovery, and preventive measures. "Focus will also be placed on integrity education among the public to instil a lasting culture of integrity," he said in a statement today. Azam said the main goal is to produce a society that is principled and resilient in rejecting corruption. "The MACC understands the people's expectations and will carry out this trust to the best of its ability to make Malaysia corruption-free and to strengthen the nation's economy. "The MACC also stands firmly with the government and the people in realising the aspirations of the 13MP, to ensure the country's socio-economic development remains sustainable and benefits the people fairly and equitably." Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will focus on ensuring transparent, agile and decisive service delivery from civil servants. He said this would be achieved through reforms centred on institutionalising an efficient and effective government, delivering people-centric services, strengthening fiscal resilience, and ensuring impactful spending on targeted groups. "Integrity and accountability must be embedded across the board — not only among civil servants or enforcement agencies, but also across all sectors, including the private sector, statutory bodies, GLCs, GLICs, and civil society organisations. "The Madani government is committed to strengthening the governance ecosystem through legal and institutional reforms, including in Parliament," he said when tabling the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat.
