Revenue officers seize cannabis worth over €1.5m in two separate operations
On Sunday, July 6, as a result of an intelligence led operation, Revenue officers seized 52kgs of herbal cannabis, with an estimated value of €1,040,000 at Dublin Airport.
The cannabis was discovered concealed in vacuum packed packages within the baggage of two passengers who had disembarked from a flight originating from the USA.
A male in his 30s and a female in her 40s, were subsequently arrested by An Garda Síochána in relation to the seizure and have since appeared before the Courts.
The following day on Monday, July 07, following an intelligence led operation Revenue officers made a separate seizure of approximately 23kgs of herbal cannabis, with an estimated value of €462,000 at Dublin Airport.
Following an indication by drug detection dog, Jack, the cannabis was discovered concealed in vacuum packed packages within the baggage of a passenger who had disembarked from a flight originating from Thailand.
A male in his 30s was subsequently arrested by An Garda Síochána in relation to the seizure and is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Dublin Garda Station.
A spokesperson for Revenue said investigations into both seizures are ongoing.
The spokesperson added: 'These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs.

A Deliveroo worker was chased by men in a stolen car who threw things at him as he tried to get away on his moped but he suffered a broken leg when the car deliberately rammed him off the bike, leaving him on the road with his fractured leg protruding through his skin. Judge Sinead Behan said the endangerment of the life of this young Brazilian man must have been a terrifying and extremely painful experience for him. 27-year-old Adrian Long was jailed for a total of three years for this endangerment and other crimes carried out in a violent escapade of offences carried out on the one day in October last year. Judge Behan said at Cork Circuit Criminal Court: 'This young man was going about his work. He came to the attention of Adrian Long and his companion. They pursued him at speed. They threw things at him. They rear-ended him on his motorbike. It must have been a terrifying experience. He showed huge courage (when taken on by the two men) that he punched the co-accused. 'But afterwards they knocked him off his bike. Their vehicle came in contact with him and broke his leg. Mr Long admitted his part in relation to that. 'The Deliveroo driver was left with his bone protruding from his leg. It must have been very painful and very frightening. Motorbikes are vulnerable machines. He was left with very serious injuries requiring surgery. That offence was intentionally carried out. 'I am told he (the defendant) was heavily addicted at the time and only has a fragmented recollection – he expressed remorse. He has undiagnosed mental health issues and a significant criminal record.' Judge Behan imposed an overall sentence of four years with the last year suspended. A driving disqualification of 15 years was also imposed on him. 27-year-old Adrian Long of 14 Willowbank, Upper Fair Hill, Cork, pleaded guilty to charges of causing criminal damage, theft, attempted theft, driving a stolen car and assault causing harm to a member of An Garda Síochána and endangerment in respect of the moped ramming. Emmet Boyle, defence barrister, said Mr Long had mental health issues and showed genuine remorse. He said these offences occurred despite efforts made by his parents to bring him to his GP a short time before this in order to get help for his issues. List of offences Detective Garda Mark Durcan said that a jeep-type vehicle was stolen on October 21, 2024, at Courtbrack, Blarney, and that on October 31 Adrian Long and his accomplice went on a rampage in it. Det. Garda Durcan said Mr Long stole items from a vehicle in Whitethorn Avenue in Ballincollig after the window of the vehicle had been broken. Bank cards stolen from Woodbine in Ballincollig were late used in Hollyhill. Binoculars were also stolen. After 6am a car parked at Ballyhooley Road was smashed in an attempt to get into it. By 10am two men entered Tesco in Mallow to buy a bottle of Southern Comfort but it was too early to sell alcohol, in terms of licensing laws. They threw €50 on the counter and left with it. There was a break-in to a car at Woodville, Glanmire, at around 10.45pm. Ten minutes later in Little Island an off-duty member of An Garda Síochána observed two men trying cars. One of them was sitting in a Ford Focus outside a house when the member approached and identified himself as being a garda. 'A struggle ensued and he received a number of blows to the body and face from Mr Long. He was unable to attend work for a number of days due to his injuries. 'A Deliveroo driver was knocked off his moped in Blackrock and received serious leg injuries. Later, on the north side of Cork City the jeep took off at speed when gardaí indicated for it to stop. "The vehicle rammed the garda car on two occasions in the Mallow Road area of Cork. The garda car was too damaged to continue before the stolen car was driven to Carrignavar where it was later found burned out. The loss to the owner was around €15,000,' Det. Garda Durcan said. As well as all of that, a couple who were leaving home for an early flight from Cork Airport saw the two men trying to break into a car. They began to video the two men and Adrian Long became threatening to the couple and smashed a window of their vehicle.

Man (23) sexually assaulted woman after stalking teen girl as she walked home

A 23-year-old man stalked a teenage girl as she walked home hours before he sexually assaulted an older woman near Dundalk town centre, a circuit court sentence hearing has been told. Oladipupo Awolaja, with an address at the time at Beacon Court, Coe's Road, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to charges of stalking and sexual assault on July 13, 2024. He has previous convictions in his native Netherlands, including two for sexual assault. The court heard that he came to Ireland with a 'vague plan' to find work. Mr Awolaja, who had the assistance of a Dutch interpreter, has been in custody since he was arrested by Gardaí on July 16. It was noted that the offence of stalking was relatively new in this country, having come into effect on November 1, 2023, following the commencement of the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023. Judge Dara Hayes said that these were serious offences which crossed the custodial threshold as he adjourned finalisation of the case until Thursday. Gda Nicole McGovern gave evidence that as the 15-year-old and her younger sister walked home she noticed a man following as they walked past Londis in Quay Street, Dundalk. Such was her concern she twice crossed the road. When she sped up, he matched her pace. She was nervous and worried. Another man noticed what was going on. He initially thought the three people were together before he decided to follow. The two girls eventually went into the garden of a house. There was no direct contact with the accused. The man followed Awolaja who ran away. This person then returned to the house and spoke to the girls' parents. Later that day at 7pm a 27-year-old woman was followed from Crowe Street into Jocelyn Street and onto Jocelyn Drive as she walked home from work. In Jocelyn Drive the victim felt someone grab her bottom with both hands. When she turned around a man grabbed her upper arm to stop her moving before grabbing her crotch over the clothing. She tried to break free. A male cyclist caused the attacker to run away. He was chased by two other passers-by but managed to escape. CCTV footage was obtained during the investigation of each incident. Two days later, on July 15, Gda McGovern said that while on patrol with a colleague she saw a man matching a description given acting suspiciously. They spoke to him. He appeared 'extremely nervous'. He provided his details. As the CCTV canvass began they were able to identify the defendant as the man they had spoken to. The case was heard in Dundalk Circuit Court. Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 8th Oladipupo Awolaja was arrested the next day when Gardaí got a search warrant for a residence in Beacon Court where he was staying with family friends. He was present at the time. Items of clothing were seized. He made no admissions during interview. He denied being in Jocelyn Drive, said the clothing wasn't his and denied stalking. The accused was brought in Garda custody to Dundalk Court on July 17 where he was refused bail. There were no previous convictions in Ireland but 16 previous convictions at district court level in the Netherlands, including two for sexual assault and one for each of causing minor bodily injury and causing grievous bodily injury as well as for threats and drugs offences. Neither injured party was present at the hearing. Their Victim Impact Statements were read into the record. The 27-year-old lady said that when the assault happened she couldn't scream. Nothing came out. 'It lasted no longer than 30 seconds but those seconds changed my life forever.' She felt so alone and isolated. "It makes me feel hopeless as a woman every time I go out.' It was just her and her husband in Ireland. They lived here to work and save. She changed her job and now worked with her husband. They took the same day off together. The teenager said that she was afraid to walk alone. This went on for seven months. She was still very suspicious and 'scared to walk alone in the town I grew up in'. She rarely walked alone. Senior counsel John Berry, instructed by solicitor Niall Breen, said that he was not seeking minimise what occurred. To be grabbed by a stranger on the street had to be an extraordinarily scary experience. The stalking was scary, particularly in light of the age of the victim. Mr Berry submitted that both offences were 'at the lower end of the spectrum'. The defendant had spent almost a year in custody. He instructed that he had no desire to remain in Ireland and wished to return to Holland where he was born and grew up and where there was a support structure for him. Mr Awolaja had come to Ireland with a 'vague plan'. A probation report assessed him at high risk of reoffending. Counsel said that there was also a separate charge of affray against him, allegedly committed the month before this. Judge Hayes remarked that these were serious offences. The stalking lasted for several minutes on a Saturday afternoon. Thankfully, it drew another man's attention. He would 'undoubtedly have protected them if the need had arisen'. The defendant followed the other victim through the centre of town 'around the front and side of this building'. He sexually assaulted her. Improvised explosive device made safe after being recovered from house in Co Armagh

The PSNI attended the property in Keady on Monday after a man was arrested in connection with the discovery of bombs in the Republic of Ireland. The Army supported the PSNI raid which took place on Tassagh Road. 'Police have recovered and made safe an improvised explosion device and removed a number of items from a house search in Keady,' a PSNI spokesperson said. 'The items and the device were seized and taken away for further forensic examinations." The operation is focused on a potential link to a hoax device discovered in Co Armagh earlier this month. "Officers carried out a search at the location in support of an investigation by An Garda Síochána in Monaghan," the police spokesperson added. 'Enquiries are continuing and at this stage, police are investigating a potential link between this search and a security alert which occurred at the Ballyards Road area of Milford in Armagh on Tuesday July 1.' Gardai previously said the arrest in the Republic came as part of the investigation into the discovery of a number of attempted IEDs in the north-east and south-west of Ireland including at premises near Foynes in Co Limerick. The suspect, who is aged in his 40s , was arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act during an operation in Co Monaghan on Sunday evening – the legislation allows Garda to hold a suspect for up to three days if a superintendent or the court approves the decision. The suspect is being investigated for possible links to dissident republicans. The probe also follows the discovery of devices in Castleblayney Co Monaghan last week. An Garda Síochána confirmed it was liaising with the PSNI. PSNI Detective Inspector Winters said: 'Our enquiries are continuing in relation to this investigation, as we work closely with our colleagues from An Garda Síochána.
