After The Hug, Comes The Hesitation: Why Raj Thackeray Isn't Sold On A Reunion Yet

Raj Thackeray's calculated vagueness is telling. He has, so far, offered no endorsement of Uddhav's leadership, no clarity on the MNS's role in future polls
When Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray stood shoulder-to-shoulder on stage at the July 5 'Marathi Vijay Rally', it wasn't just another photo-op. Or so it seemed at the time. The cousins hugged, invoked Balasaheb's legacy, and for a moment, made thousands of old-school Shiv Sainiks and MNS loyalists believe that Maharashtra's original saffron family was making a comeback.
But a week later, the afterglow has faded, and so has the talk of a political alliance.
At an internal MNS meeting in Taigatpuri, Raj Thackeray made it clear, 'I went to the Vijay Rally with Uddhav Thackeray only on the Marathi issue." No mention of elections. No commitment to joint strategy. No sign of a formal handshake beyond the optics. In fact, he told party workers that any decision on alliance or seat-sharing would only come during the BMC and municipal elections, in November or December.
So the real question now is: Did Raj Thackeray just distance himself from Uddhav? And was that emotional rally nothing more than nostalgia in saffron hues?
Uddhav Thackeray, who now leads the Shiv Sena (UBT) after losing the party's name and symbol to Eknath Shinde, has been searching for a revival strategy. With Sharad Pawar's NCP now split, and the Congress struggling to energise its base in urban Maharashtra, Uddhav has every reason to bring Raj into the fold. A joint Thackeray front could plug the leak in the Marathi vote bank, especially in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Nashik, where divided loyalties have helped the BJP and Shinde's faction gain ground.
But the problem is that Raj Thackeray hasn't committed to seat-sharing. He hasn't agreed to contest elections with the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which includes the Congress and NCP(SP). And sources say he's still running the numbers, calculating whether the MNS has more to lose or gain by siding with Uddhav.
The emotional power of that Vijay Rally was undeniable. Long-time Shiv Sainiks wept. MNS workers chanted Balasaheb's name. Leaders like Anil Parab and Kishori Pednekar called it a 'dream moment" that the Sena supremo would've loved to see. But behind the scenes, the arithmetic isn't adding up.
The MNS still holds sway in pockets of Mumbai and Nashik, but hasn't translated charisma into seats in years. Uddhav's Sena, while wounded, remains organisationally stronger. If they join forces, who gives up which turf? Whose cadres dominate local 'shakhas'? Who controls ticket distribution?
That's not just a negotiation, it's a minefield.
And that's before factoring in the Congress and NCP, whose ideological pitch is far more inclusive than the MNS's past rhetoric on migrants and reservations. Aligning with Raj could alienate Muslim voters in urban seats, something the Congress will not accept lightly.
Raj Thackeray's calculated vagueness is telling. He has, so far, offered no endorsement of Uddhav's leadership, no clarity on the MNS's role in future polls, and no indication that a realignment is imminent.
He's keeping his options open, and that includes walking away.
What this suggests is that the July 5 rally may have been a strategic pause, not a turning point. Raj got the optics, Uddhav got a morale boost, and both reconnected with their base. But neither offered anything concrete. And in a state where the BJP-Shinde machine is already gearing up for the next round of municipal polls, that vagueness could cost them.
So did Raj snub Uddhav? Maybe not outright. But he certainly hasn't said yes. And in politics, silence often speaks louder than words.
Raj has promised to 'decide later", after weighing the pros and cons. But time is not on their side. The BMC polls are looming. The BJP and Shinde are mobilising. And unless the cousins can sort out their differences and present a united front with real policy, shared seats, and a common agenda, the Marathis will continue to watch the Thackeray drama from the sidelines, not the voting booth.

Congress brass unhappy over MLAs not opposing public security Bill in Assembly

The Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, 2024, sailed through the State Assembly on July 10 as well as the Legislative Council the next day with minimal resistance from the Opposition benches. While a Communist Party of India MLA objected, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar declared that the Bill, put to a vote through a voice vote, was approved by a majority. It has now emerged that Congress MLAs were directed to oppose the Bill in the Assembly and also register their dissent in the joint legislative committee appointed to scrutinise it. Yet, no dissent note was given on record to the committee or the Speaker, nor did the Congress MLAs explicitly oppose the Bill on the floor of the House. The Hindu has accessed a draft of the seven-page dissent note the party leadership had sent to the MLAs on July 10, asking them to put their opposition on record. Maharashtra Opposition Protests with Pumpkins, Slams Govt Over Inaction Senior Congress leaders admitted that the MLAs failed to uphold the party's stance in the Lower House, but claimed that the legislators had opposed the Bill during the voice vote. 'I wasn't aware that the Bill was to be tabled that day. If I were in the House, I would have torn it to pieces,' Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Vijay Waddettiwar, who was absent that day, told reporters on Thursday. Congress sources said the party leadership has taken a serious view of the lapse on the part of the MLAs, and Mr. Waddetiwar has been issued a notice to explain why they failed to take up the issue in the Assembly. The CLP leader has, however, denied receiving any notice. The party leadership had sent the dissent note to legislators the same day, giving a clause-by-clause analysis of the problems with the Bill. 'We all received the dissent note, but after the Bill was already passed. What was the point in submitting the note after the Bill was already passed?' a Congress MLA told The Hindu . The next day, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), including Congress leaders, submitted an eight-page dissent note to the Chairperson of the Legislative Council after the Bill was passed with the Opposition staging a walkout after speeches by Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLCs against the legislation. 'Not allowed to speak' Former Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole, a member of the joint committee, told The Hindu : 'We made them remove many problematic provisions. We still had objections which we thought we will take up in the House. They did not allow us to speak. Yet, I presented my side.' He added that he did not receive any dissenting note sent by the party. MVA legislators, including Congress MLAs, will meet the Maharashtra Governor on Friday to request him not to sign the Bill passed by both the Houses.

Bhupesh Baghel's son arrested by ED in liquor scam probe: Who is Chaitanya Baghel?

Bhupesh Baghel son Chaitanya Arrested: In a jolt for the Congress, the Enforcement Directorate on Friday arrested former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel's son Chaitanya in connection with an alleged liquor scam. This comes a couple of months after the central agency raided 14 locations in connection with its probe into the alleged scam, including the Baghels' Bhilai residence. The ED conducted its first raid in the case on March 10 and has already arrested former excise minister Kawasi Lakhma in connection with its investigation. The agency has alleged that the scam in the excise department began in 2019 and continued till 2022. At the time, the Congress was in power. The ED has informed a PMLA court in Raipur that the syndicate behind the scam was led by former Raipur Mayor and Congress leader Aijaz Dhebar's brother Anwar and retired IAS officer Anil Tuteja. Among other things, the syndicate they are accused of running allegedly altered the liquor policy and created a parallel system to sell liquor. The Chhattisgarh State Marketing Corporation Limited (CSMCL) procured liquor only from those paying a commission to the syndicate and a major portion of this went to the Congress. While the ED estimates a loss of Rs 2,161 crore to the exchequer, the state Economic Offences Wing (EOW) that is probing the crime aspect of the reported liquor scam recently pegged it at Rs 3,200 crore and chargesheeted 22 excise department officials. Chaitanya, whose exact role in this has not been publicly revealed at the moment, is a member of the Congress, but has chosen to stay away from politics, according to party insiders. His electoral politics debut was initially planned when his father was at the helm of the state between 2018 and 2023, but it did not materialise. After Baghel was nominated to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Rajnandgaon, speculation was rife that Chaitanya would enter the Assembly from his Patan Assembly constituency. But with the former CM losing the parliamentary election, this did not come to pass. One of Baghel's four children, he has never held any party post and looks after the family's vegetable farm. He was earlier involved in the real estate business, according to Congress insiders. This is not his first brush with law enforcement agencies. Last year, days after Baghel wrote to then Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud over the alleged misuse of state and central agencies to defame him and 'end his political career', the police in Durg questioned Chaitanya in connection with the attempted murder of a professor in Bhilai. This arrest is a setback for Baghel, the Congress's tallest leader in Chhattisgarh. Since losing the elections, he has been an integral part of the party's national leadership. Earlier this year, he was appointed the AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab in an attempt to unify the faction-ridden state unit. Often referred to by the nickname 'Kaka', which translates to uncle, Baghel is known for being an approachable leader.

If you go to Bikaner, every person there will say that Robert Vadra earned a lot of money by selling their land. Why are they politicising this issue? Instead, they should face the investigation agency," Meghwal told ANI. Earlier today, Delhi's Rouse Avenue court took up the money laundering chargesheet against Robert Vadra and others and listed it for verification of documents. The court has sought a report from the record keeper (Ahalmad) and listed the matter for hearing submissions of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 24. ED Chargesheet Against Robert Vadra, Others in Shikohpur Land Deal Case The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday filed a charge sheet against Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a land deal in Haryana's Shikohpur, official sources said. His office issued a statement later saying the present proceedings are nothing more than an extension of the political witch hunt by the present government against Vadra. This is the first time that any probe agency has filed a prosecution complaint naming the 56-year-old Vadra in a criminal case. The federal investigative agency, sources told PTI, has also attached 43 immovable properties located in Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat worth Rs. 37.64 crore pertaining to Vadra and his linked entities like Sky Light Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. and others. A provisional attachment order was issued by the agency on Wednesday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said. The sources said the charge sheet has been filed before the Rouse Avenue court here under various sections of the PMLA. A total of 11 entities including Vadra, a firm linked to him named Sky Light Hospitality Pvt. Ltd., Satyanand Yajee and Kewal Singh Virk, their company Onkareshwar Properties Pvt. Ltd. and some others have been named as accused, the sources said. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
