Karachi to Thar safari train launched

Express Tribune10-02-2025
LAHORE:
In a joint effort with Pakistan Railways, the Sindh government has launched the Karachi to Thar Desert Safari tourist train, according to a press statement released on Monday. The cooperation of provincial governments is essential for the restoration of more tourist trains, as the required funds for tourism are allocated to the provinces.
Pakistan Railways Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Aamir Ali Baloch, while addressing public queries during an e-Kachehri, emphasised that Pakistan Railways is a federal institution committed to providing the best travel facilities. Baloch explained that Pakistan Railways' top priority are its passengers, however, public cooperation in maintaining cleanliness is also indispensable. He urged passengers to dispose of food waste and other trash only in designated bins to ensure the cleanliness of trains and stations. He explained that launching new trains requires substantial resources.
"As soon as the necessary resources become available, the process of introducing new trains will commence. Significant work remains on the ML-2 railway line, and suspended train services will also be gradually restored as resources allow," he said.
Responding to a question regarding the restoration of the Landi Kotal railway track, the Pakistan Railways' CEO stated that the rehabilitation of the railway track from Peshawar to Landi Kotal would cost over Rs10 billion. The project will proceed as soon as the required funds are available. To enhance passenger convenience, Baloch directed improvements to the railway's mobile application to make it more user-friendly, ensuring that passengers do not face any difficulties.

Poppy cultivation

Listen to article The recent debate in the Balochistan Assembly over the increasing cultivation of poppy in the province has, once again, brought to light an uncomfortable but necessary conversation. Can poppy be harnessed as a legitimate source of revenue? While the knee-jerk reaction is often to denounce poppy due to its association with illicit drugs, it is time to view the issue through a pragmatic and economically informed lens. With Afghanistan's strict ban on opium cultivation under the Taliban, the regional dynamics of poppy production have shifted. Farmers across the Baloch and Pashtun belt of Pakistan - facing poverty and limited state support ùare increasingly turning to poppy as a high-value cash crop. Instead of allowing this trade to operate in the shadows, Pakistan should explore regulated cultivation of poppy for medicinal and pharmaceutical use, thereby generating revenue and curbing illegal trafficking. Globally, countries like India, Turkey and Australia have long-established state-regulated systems for cultivating opium poppies for the production of painkillers such as morphine and codeine. These systems prove that poppy can be grown responsibly and legally under strict government oversight. There is no reason Pakistan, with proper legislation and institutional support, cannot follow a similar path. The potential export market to pharmaceuticals is massive. Moreover, a state-regulated poppy economy could draw people away from trafficking networks, allowing the government to exert more control over borderlands where its writ is already weak. The revenue generated can be redirected into rural development - precisely in the areas most affected by instability. To be clear, this is not a call for reckless liberalisation. Any policy to regulate poppy must be accompanied by ironclad monitoring mechanisms and a clear distinction between legitimate pharmaceutical production and narcotics trafficking. But to ignore the economic potential of poppy is to ignore a potential solution.

PM Shehbaz vows tougher stance against militancy, lauds counter-terror efforts

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed his government's resolve to eliminate terrorism and enforce the writ of the state, saying Pakistan had adopted a multifaceted strategy to tackle militancy and violent extremism. Chairing a high-level meeting of the steering committee on counterterrorism and state authority, referred to as the 'Harden the State' initiative, the premier said the world acknowledged Pakistan's gains in its fight against terrorism. 'Pakistan's brave forces have taken decisive action through operations like Zarb-e-Azb and Radd-ul-Fasaad. In the latest battles, the world has seen Pakistan's success,' the prime minister said, according to a statement issued by the PM Office. He credited the country's counterterrorism approach with combining ground operations, legislation, public engagement, and efforts to curb extremist ideologies. PM Shehbaz praised the coordination between federal and provincial governments and directed full implementation of the committee's recommendations to bolster security and intelligence cooperation. 'Our brave officers and soldiers who have laid down their lives for the motherland are a source of pride for the nation,' he said, adding that the war against terrorism had unified the armed forces, intelligence services, law enforcement, and the Pakistani people. The prime minister also appreciated the role played by the Counter Terrorism Departments, especially in Punjab, as well as the contributions of the Interior Ministry and the Intelligence Bureau. The prime minister said the government was actively working on a comprehensive and actionable strategy to eliminate threats posed by groups like 'Fitna-e-Hindustan' and 'Fitna-e-Khawarij' -references often used for Indian-backed proxies and violent extremist groups. He further noted that joint actions by relevant institutions had curbed smuggling, helping stabilize the economy. 'The impact of anti-smuggling efforts has been positive for the economy,' he added. Highlighting broader governance reforms, the premier said initiatives such as the digitisation of government systems and tax reforms were helping to restore investor confidence. He pointed to recent gains in the Pakistan Stock Exchange and improved global credit ratings as signs of economic recovery. On the issue of illegal Afghan migrants, PM Shehbaz said their repatriation was continuing in line with international law. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir, National Security Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Asim Malik, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Adviser Rana Sanaullah, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, chief secretaries, police chiefs of all provinces, and other senior officials.
